January 13, 2026 | 0 Comments

BUEI kicks off its 2026 Kids Hour Saturdays on January 17 with a lionfish-themed programme for young explorers and families.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] is excited to announce the return of Kids Hour Saturdays, now in its fifth year of inspiring young ocean explorers, budding scientists and their families. This beloved educational series, kindly sponsored by Allshores, continues in 2026 as a nine-part monthly series running from January through September, with each session spotlighting a different marine theme.

“The first installment of this year’s Kids Hour takes place this Saturday 17 January, with presentations at 11am and 2pm. This month’s theme focuses on the fascinating and important topic of lionfish. We will feature a short film ‘Hungry Hungry Lionfish’, engaging book reading of ‘Luca the Confident Lionfish’ by Robin Royal and creative educational activities that are fun for all ages.

“Lionfish, while beautiful and striking in appearance, are an invasive species that pose a serious threat to coral reef ecosystems in Bermuda and throughout the Atlantic Ocean. During this month’s Kids Hour, children will learn what makes lionfish unique, how they impact local marine life, and what scientists and conservationists are doing to help protect reef habitats. The series introduces these concepts in a fun, age-appropriate way by encouraging curiosity and environmental awareness from an early age.

“Kids Hours are dynamic, interactive, welcoming, and accessible for young learners, and are recommended for ages 3 years and up. Admission is free for BUEI members and just $5 per child for non-members. Adults are free of charge for children attending Kids Hour. Each session also includes BUEI’s monthly I-Spy challenge and complimentary admission to the BUEI’s Ocean Discovery Centre where your family can explore the wonders of the ocean!

“Kids Hour Saturdays are a staple of BUEI’s education programmes and community outreach, offering consistent opportunities for children to connect with ocean science beyond the classroom. The dates and themes for 2026 Kids Hours are:

  • 17 January: Lionfish
  • 21 February: Sea Turtles
  • 21 March: Whales
  • 18 April: Seahorse
  • 16 May: Shells
