[Written by Stephen Wright]
Kallan Richardson said he is relishing the opportunity to test himself against elite competition in the Chubb Half Bermuda Triangle Challenge.
The 20-year-old will line up alongside Sean Trott and Ryan Outerbridge as Bermuda’s representatives in the elite men’s field for the Butterfield Mile tomorrow [January 16].
Richardson, who graduated from St John’s University last summer, said he was particularly excited about competing in the iconic mile race.
“I was surprised to be invited to compete in the elite races,” Richardson told Bernews.
“I haven’t raced a mile in a long time, so it’s going to be something different from what I’m used to.”
An actuarial analyst with Arch Insurance, Richardson produced an impressive performance at the Hannover Re Half-Marathon in November, finishing third in a time of 1hr 19min 22sec.
Dennis Mbelenzi won the race in 1:12:14, with Sean Trott finishing second in 1:16:49.
“I had a few Achilles and hip issues over the summer, but those seem to have been resolved,” Richardson said.
He added that he plans to compete in the Swan’s Running Club Legends Series this year and is targeting a podium finish at the Bermuda Day Half-Marathon.
Meanwhile, Ben Claridge will return to the island to defend his title in the Butterfield Mile elite men’s race on Front Street.
The Briton, who won last year’s event in 4:10.76, is among the athletes listed in the Chubb Half Bermuda Triangle Challenge official programme.
Also returning are Americans Danny Cosgrove, who finished second last year in 4:13.61, and Andrew Wacker, who placed fifth in 4:17.85.
The mile races are scheduled to start at 7pm.
