Blue Backyard, a new Bermuda-based initiative founded by oceanographer and educator Dr. Alex Amat, is launching two summer programmes for young people designed to build a deeper connection to the ocean through hands-on real-world learning.

A spokesperson said, “Rooted in a core belief – that the ocean should be experienced, understood and valued by everyone – Blue Backyard aims to reconnect young people with the sea through both creative and immersive pathways.

Dive into Digital [Bermuda]

“Dive into Digital is a one-week, full-day programme [9am–5pm] taking place July 6-10, 2026 at the Rajeev Kapur Centre for AI Literacy at Bermuda High School. Open to students aged 12 to 17, the programme uses digital creation as a gateway to ocean awareness.

“Participants will design and build their own ocean-themed video games while learning:

  • Foundational coding concepts
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • How human activity impacts marine ecosystems

“As part of the process, students explore how human activity impacts the ocean and translate this understanding into interactive digital experiences.

“No prior coding experience is required. Students are guided step by step by professional video game educators and an ocean scientist.

“The programme also includes a boat and snorkelling outing, connecting digital work with real-world ocean experience.”

“Technology is part of our present and our future,” said Dr. Amat.
“If young people are spending time on screens, let’s empower them to become creators with purpose, using those tools to understand, share and protect the ocean.”

A spokesperson added, “Spaces are limited. Registrations are open at bluebackyard.org or https://bermudayouth.com/events/.

Blue Odyssey [Greece]

“For teens drawn to the ocean in a more direct way, Blue Backyard also offers Blue Odyssey – a small-group sailing expedition designed for those seeking more than a traditional summer programme.

“This voyage will take place in the Dodecanese Islands, Greece, from July 11–21, 2026. The programme is open to participants aged 14 to 17 and is limited to five students, ensuring close mentorship and a highly personalised experience.”

“Time at sea has a unique ability to build confidence, curiosity and respect for the natural world,” said Dr. Amat. “Blue Odyssey gives young people meaningful responsibility, hands-on learning and the opportunity to grow through shared experience while reconnecting with the ocean.”

A spokesperson added, “Through shared responsibility on board, participants develop confidence, independence and practical skills, while gaining a deeper understanding of the ocean and the cultures connected to it.

“The bilingual French-English crew also creates opportunities for language exposure through everyday activities, from navigation to cooking.

“This multicultural expedition combines practical seamanship, marine science observation and daily life aboard a sailing vessel, alongside cultural discovery during island stops. Learning extends into everyday moments – from navigation to cooking – where teamwork and communication are essential.

Pathways to Ocean Awareness

“Together, Blue Odyssey and Dive into Digital offer two complementary pathways to ocean engagement:

  • One through direct immersion and adventure at sea
  • The other through creativity, technology and storytelling

“Both aim to foster:

  • Environmental awareness and stewardship
  • Confidence and independence
  • Collaboration and critical thinking
  • A lasting personal connection to the ocean

Registrations Now Open

“Spaces are intentionally limited to maintain small group sizes and high-quality experiences.”
