“The arrival of these flashing amber lights is important in enhancing road safety for all,” said Minister of Public Works Lt/Col David Burch.

“The newly arrived beacons will be installed at key locations in the coming weeks, ensuring safer passage for pedestrians.

“Installation will commence immediately, starting with replacing the existing pedestrian signal at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo.

“This site will receive an upgraded system featuring a continuous green light with an activation red light for pedestrian crossings, alongside three advanced yellow flashing beacons—similar to those currently in place at the Railway Trail crossing near Harmony Club in Paget.

“Following this initial upgrade, work will continue at other priority locations, including near the Ice Queen restaurant in Paget, the Paget Tunnel, and My Lords Bay near the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Hamilton Parish.

“New flashing amber lights will be installed at 20 locations, with repairs scheduled at three existing crossings. Additional beacons have been ordered to ensure wider coverage across Bermuda.”

Minister Burch added: “Pedestrians deserve the assurance that crosswalks are properly marked and equipped to alert motorists. This initiative reflects the Government’s ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure and deliver on its promise to create safer roadways.”

Minister Burch further emphasised the importance of the upgrades, adding, “The installation of these lights is not just about modernisation; it is about ensuring that pedestrians can navigate Bermuda’s roads safely and confidently. The Ministry is dedicated to rolling out these improvements as efficiently as possible.”

A Government spokesperson added, “Residents and motorists are encouraged to remain alert and to exercise caution as the installations progress. The Ministry of Public Works will continue to provide updates on the rollout of these essential safety measures.”

Are pedestrians these days incapable of using Zebra crossings without traffic lights?

Are drivers these days incapable of recognising Zebra crossings without traffic lights?

    • Just Sayin says:

I see your point, but the reality is that most zebra crossings outside of Hamilton have stripes that are so worn that you can’t even see them. The easy fix would be to maintain them and paint them! When these things fail they will ignore them as well and not maintain.

The zebra crossing / speed bump ones that double as a speed bump and crossing are dangerous and I am amazed that someone has not been killed. Even at 35kph, they are dangerous if you hit one and are not prepared. I saw some tourists a few weeks ago going trough Somerset and hit the speed bump/zebra crossing near HSBC. The white is so worn away that is hardly visable amd seves no purpose. Whos bright idea was it do put speed bumps in the middle of the road around the island I dont know but please get rid of them before someone else looses control and gets killed this time. They have been serious accidents at Flatts, Devils Hole and near Corporation of Hamilton. I believe the one near Corp of Ham was removed but I could be wrong. Many years ago a firetruck going to an Emergency hit the one hear Harrington Sound School which resulted in injury. But it is still there. How those tourists did not loose control of their vehicle I dont know. They were shaken but not hurt – thank goodness.

The PLP by saying they are doing this for pedestrian safety have ADMITTED that they have NEGLECTED the safety of BERMUDIANS for quite some time.

This should not be a big announcement, it is standard maintenance. Paint the Zebra Crossings, have the flashing beacons working properly.

Having traffic lights in rush hour will increase the wait time for vehicles and increase traffic congestion ! that will be a nightmare.

  2. hmmm says:

The infrastructure HAD NOT BEEN MAINTAINED by the PLP!!!!! yet the PLP are trying to seek praise out of a failure to do the basics right.

Crossings should have been repainted, and beacons working without fanfare.

One on Harbour road are invisible. It is not the only one. Introducing lights at Flatts will cause rush hour congestion. That is a mistake.

the fact they bucket it with a need for pedestrian safety, means they haven’t cared about pedestrian safety until now. Vote them out.

Wow! All these flashers in Bermuda

  4. Fisherman says:

    More street distractions for drivers

  5. Gerald says:

Light will not stop de eeeegrance on des roads, and with all these tub holes on the road with frustrated people!

    • Joe Bloggs says:

Agreed. Had traffic cops been on duty for the past 20 years or so we might not now have the issues we do.

  6. A Towzer says:

Nice. Now how do we get the City of Hamilton to stop using slippery paint for the crossings so that seniors and others crossing when the road is wet? Mainly by Victoria Park/BMDS (both crossings at the top and foot of the hill) and other places.

  7. CaraPace says:

Amazing the story speaks about replacing lights at a crosswalk which already has lights first. When there are crosswalks in other areas which do not have lights and have been promised lights. SMH!!! And we say that there is no color or class issues in this country!!!

  8. Concern For Next Gen says:

Just in time to try and get that extra election vote!!

  9. Ringmaster says:

I can see serious downsides on having the light green unless activated by button. For example since they mention it will be one of the first to change, the crossing at the Aquarium is noted for people not pushing the button to activate the flashing orange. Now it will show green which will indicate to motorists it’s safe to drive through. Stupid decision by Burch.

    • Just Saying says:

Very good observation there maybe more pedestrians being run over. It seems they didn’t give it much thought.

  10. TRUTH says:

Save the containers for the OBA//UBP. They will need to pack fast on Feb 18, to join the titanic

    • Joe Bloggs says:

The UBP has been gone since 2011. The last UBP members still sitting in the House of Assembly are all PLP MPs now. Please try to keep up with events in Bermuda.

  11. BDA says:

What about East Broadway are these going there as well… hmm.. No update on Saltus lights re ETA?

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Actually the ‘all stop’ junction at St Johns works very well, provided all drivers know what ‘all stop’ means and proceed from there.

It is simple, however simple is too much for many drivers and those who think that ‘stop’ does not apply to them.

  12. Red Pill says:

Nice new lights and after a few years they will inoperable just like everything else this government is responsible for.
