HSBC Warns Customers About Fraud Scam
HSBC Bermuda is warning business customers about a fraud scam involving criminals impersonating HSBC employees.
A spokesperson said, “HSBC Bermuda is warning business customers about an ongoing fraud scam in which criminals are impersonating HSBC employees and attempting to trick clients into approving or disclosing information about transactions.”
“We are continuing to receive reports of clients being contacted by individuals claiming to be calling from HSBC” said Twynika Smith-Blakeney, Head of Financial Crime and Head of Regulatory Compliance. “In these calls, the fraudster seeks confirmation of transactions and may provide convincing reference numbers to appear legitimate. If a client challenges the call, the fraudster may transfer the client to an alleged ‘manager’ or arrange a follow up call from someone claiming to be a manager.”
The spokesperson said, “In recent weeks, there have been repeated fraudulent attempts of material transaction sizes across multiple clients. As a reminder, HSBC will never ask you to:
- “Share your password, PIN, One Time Passcode [OTP] or security codes
- Approve a payment you did not initiate
- Install software or provide remote access to your device
- Move funds to a ‘safe’ or ‘holding’ account
“If you receive a call of an urgent nature referring to fraud, feel free to end the call immediately and contact HSBC Bermuda using a trusted number from your Relationship Manager, official HSBC website, or the number on official correspondence. Do not use a number provided by the caller. If there is actual fraud, our team will advise once you have been correctly verified using legitimate contact details.
“HSBC is actively monitoring this activity and working to support affected clients. Businesses should remain vigilant, reinforce internal payment controls [including call-backs using verified numbers], and ensure staff are trained to recognise impersonation tactics.”
