Information Commissioner Jason Outerbridge announced that Alaire Brown of The Berkeley Institute is the winner of the Bermuda Right to Know Day Youth Social Media Campaign Competition.

A spokesperson said, “The competition was delivered in partnership with SkillCraft Bermuda, which invited SkillCraft participants and alumnae to submit a social media public awareness campaign proposal that encourages young people in Bermuda to learn about and exercise their public access to information [PATI] rights. As the winner, Ms. Brown has been awarded a two-week internship with the ICO to further develop and launch her social media campaign across the ICO’s platforms.”

Ms. Brown has expressed that: “Participating in this competition gave me deep insight into what the PATI Act is. The PATI Act is a very important right that all young people should know about, so I look forward to working with the ICO to inform youth about the PATI Act and ignite curiosity in Bermudian politics. We, the youth, determine the future, and we need reliable information to make it great.”

Ms. Margot Shane, Executive Director at SkillCraft, offered congratulatory remarks to Ms. Brown: “We’re delighted to congratulate Alaire Brown on winning the competition and thrilled to have partnered with the Information Commissioner’s Office on this initiative. Opportunities like this give young people real experience: a real brief, a real client, and a chance to show what they can do. Alaire rose to the challenge with creativity and professionalism, and it was inspiring to see the talent this campaign brought to the fore.

“When an organisation opens its doors this way, it does more than offer an internship. It invests in the next generation’s skills, confidence and employability, and that organisation benefits from fresh ideas in return. This is exactly the kind of model Skillcraft would love to see more organisations adopt. If your organisation is interested in creating a similar opportunity for young people, we’d be glad to hear from you. Please email us at info@skillcraft.bm.”

Information Commissioner Jason Outerbridge added: “The youth of Bermuda are engaged, connected, informed and have their own opinions about our island home, our government and issues affecting their communities and networks. This competition, and the social media campaign to follow, shows that the youth are not powerless. They can use their unique voice and skills to explore their PATI rights as a tool to become more intentionally informed by learning and knowing public information that matters to them and rallying their peers to do the same.

“Ms. Brown’s proposal showed freshness in its visual appeal and demonstrated that she understood and presented PATI rights in a way that was relatable to the youth. The ICO team looks forward to working with Ms. Brown during her internship with us as she develops and launches her PATI public awareness social media campaign.

“I also credit the amazing work of Ms. Shane and everyone at SkillCraft for continuing to invest their time into building skills and opportunities for our youth.”

The spokesperson said, “Bermudians and residents under 34 years old are statistically least aware of their PATI rights. The ICO’s Youth Social Media Campaign Competition was a new Bermuda Right to Know Day initiative that supports the ICO’s 2026 outreach goals focusing on equipping young citizens and residents with increased awareness of their personal right to access public records and information.

“This award is part of the ICO’s wider Bermuda Right to Know Day week-long programming, which includes public engagement activities designed to help residents understand how to find reliable public information and exercise their PATI rights.
