Column: Bell On Mangrove Bay Health Centre
[Opinion column written by PLP Senator Lauren Bell]
For the people of Sandys, the reopening of the Mangrove Bay Health Centre means that essential healthcare services will once again be available closer to home.
Now renamed the Alice Scott Health Centre, the renovated and expanded facility will begin full services on October 5 and will provide:
- Dental healthcare,
- Well-baby visits and immunisations,
- Physical, occupational and speech-language therapies,
- Sexual and reproductive healthcare,
- Adult wellness services and
- Integrated mental-health support.
This means parents can access important services for their children closer to home, and residents will once again have a local facility focused on treatment, prevention and wellness.
Along with the new services, this facility recognizes a Sandys healthcare icon. Alice Scott was one of Bermuda’s early registered nurses, qualifying overseas at a time when Black nurses could not train or work in Bermuda’s hospitals. She returned home and served for years as a nurse and midwife, established the Shady Rest Nursing Home and helped found Sandys Secondary School. She was also involved in the women’s suffrage movement and later became one of Bermuda’s early women parliamentary candidates.
It is only natural that a health centre serving the people of Somerset be named in her honour.
As your government, The PLP made a commitment to restore community healthcare to Sandys, providing modern, accessible services in the west.
Promise Made, Promise Kept.
The Alice Scott Health Centre belongs to this community. It carries the name of a woman who devoted her life to serving it, and now it will continue that tradition of service for years to come.
