Easter Shooting in St Georges: 2 Teens Injured

April 4, 2010

An 18 yr old man was shot at a party in St. George’s early this Easter morning [April 4], in an incident which also saw a 19 year old man stabbed. They were both rushed via ambulance to hospital with serious injuries.

We understand that at around 3:05am, an unidentified gunman[s] shot one man, with the other man injured during the incident.

The shooting took place inside the Royal Artillery Club [RAA] on Grenadier Lane in St Georges, at a “Clayhouse Reunion Part III” reggae party which was just wrapping up.

The police had a roadblock set through the night, and as of 6:30 am, there are a number of police cars and officers at the scene, crime scene tape stretched across the entrance of RAA, and we spotted the police appearing to be closely examining a “Scoopy” motorbike parked at the scene.

We are also getting sketchy reports that a gun may have been fired overnight elsewhere on the island, resulting in no injuries, but that is very, very sketchy information coming in.

Updates posted as we receive them through the day:

Update #1: We have spoken with an RAA official who informs us the shooting took place inside the club.

Update #2: Police confirm the shooting, as well as a stabbing: 18 year old shot, 19 year old stabbed.

Update #3: We understand the shooting victim is in the intensive care unit of KEMH with a police guard.

Update #4: New sketchy unconfirmed report indicates the shooter[s] may have been “St Georges boys”, at least one of the victims may have been from Somerset, and the ambulance is reported not to have arrived in a timely manner [approx 30 mins]

Update #5: Unconfirmed reports suggest it started with “someone being chopped with a machete”, and then escalated.

Update #6: Not surprisingly, we have reports there was mayhem with partygoers desperately attempting to flee the club post shooting.

Update #7: We continue to hear that the incident started with a fight, and then one entity in the fight left and returned with a gun.

Update #8: There is a police press conference at 4pm, we will have official updates around 4:30 – 5pm

Update #9: Acting Premier Paula Cox statesover the week-end there have been multiple arrests in connection with the shootings that have taken place”

Update #10: As of 1:45 pm, the club is still a crime scene with entry to RAA barred, even to RAA officials.

Update #11: Police confirm it started with a fight with 6/7 people involved, say shooter[s] was unmasked, multiple shots fired and that the victim was shot in the upper body.

Update #12: Police announce they have arrested 2 individuals for this incident, and expect to arrest more.

Update #12: 18 yr old shooting victim identified as Shawn Williams

Update #13: 2 men arrested released on police bail, 4 more men arrested.

This incident only adds to what is one of the worst holidays on Bermuda’s record, occurring only 37 hours after the daylight murder of Kimwandae Walker who died in front of his own children after being shot multiple times at an afternoon family fun day on Good Friday.

On Good Friday evening, Bermuda suffered the third road traffic fatality of the year, with the death of a 26 year old man, who has been unofficially named as Carlton “CJ” Darrell.

This makes the second time in 3 weeks that a teenager has been shot at a late night party, following the shooting of a 16 year old at a party at Bermuda College on March 13.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 299-8115 or the independent 24 hour confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.
