MP Calls For $5,000 Bounty for Guns
During the debate in the House of Assembly today, MP Wayne Perinchief [PLP] called for a “bounty” of $5,000 to be awarded for the retrieval of a firearm, in an effort to stem the rising gun violence.
A career Police Officer prior to being elected to the House, Mr Perinchief retired as head of the Criminal Investigations Department in 1995, after attaining the rank of Assistant Commissioner.
Today he spoke on “criminality in Bermuda as we see it in the present day”, further explaining that “posses” have hardened into gangs, and spoke on correlations between Bermuda’s gangs and those overseas.
He went on to recommend offering a “bounty” for turning in a firearm, saying that he believes there can be a financial motive for criminality, says “hangers on” may want to take advantage of a $5,000 payment in exchange for turning in a firearm, or someone with one.
This came on the heels of 24 year old Dekimo Martin being fatally shot early this morning, in what is the fifth gun related murder of the year.
