New Hotel & Marina Planned For St George’s

October 13, 2010

There are plans in the works for a new 60-room boutique hotel and marina to be built in St. George’s. The Corporation of St George’s has entered into an agreement with Leading Edge Ltd to further investigate and develop the marina/hotel over the next few weeks. The second new hotel to be proposed for the East End, this comes on the heels of the proposed Park Hyatt Hotel on the old Club Med site in St George’s.

The marina, which will be sited around Ordnance Island, is planned to be able to cater to both local and visiting yachts, and the growing mega yacht business, with the marina able to handle in excess of 100 yachts and boats.

The hotel will be located in the current Corporation car park opposite the eastern end of Ordnance Island. Mayor Kenny Bascome said the Corporation owns the car park free and clear with no mortgage. The developers were extremely clear that this is still in the conceptual stages, however estimated the costs to build it could be in the order of $80 – $100 million, with rooms going for $400-$500 per night. Financing is not yet fully arranged, and Bermudians will be given preference, according to the developers.

St George’s Marina and Boutique Hotel

As a result of a presentation in July by Leading Edge Ltd (LEL) of a conceptual design of a marina and hotel followed by several months of discussion the Corporation of St George’s today would like to announce they have entered into an agreement with Leading Edge Ltd to pursue a partnership and further investigate and develop this proposal of a marina and boutique hotel in St George’s over the next few months.

The marina, which will be sited around Ordnance Island, will cater to both local and visiting yachts and the growing mega yacht business. Bermuda Yacht Services (BYS) have been working with the Corporation over the past two years to expand the mega yacht business in St George’s and will assist LEL in this development. The marina will accommodate in excess of 100 yachts and boats. The idea of a marina near the town centre has been talked about over many years and was part of the St George’s Heritage Plan. The marina will help protect our water side buildings and the town centre which has always been vulnerable to hurricanes. It will move the town forward in offering the facilities that the hundreds of visiting yachts have been requesting as well as providing berths for locals.

The Corporation believes it is time to develop the concept and move towards implementation.

The boutique hotel currently targeting sixty (60) key rooms will be located in the current Corporation car park opposite the eastern end of Ordnance Island. The architectural design of the building will ensure that it blends with the historic buildings that surround it. It is our belief that the boutique hotel will complement the marina and lead to a greater success for the operators and the town than either would achieve on their own. In itself the hotel will boost the tourism aspect for St George’s increasing revenue to the local businesses with visitors becoming part of the town as they were 200 years ago.

This development should result in much needed further employment in the town centre. Looking beyond the town centre this development should prove complementary and be of benefit to existing nearby local business such as the St George’s Club, Grotto Bay, and Tucker’s Point but also to the Park Hyatt on the hill.

The price of the rooms are high for the guest that they hopefully will attract that will travel to the island to enjoy their multi million dollar yachts.

Believe it or not that price range is not out of line with modern day tourism figures for mid-range destinations. There are 100,000s of people who travel from the US east coast to destinations around the world where they pay upwards of 1000 to 1500/night for the right place. If we don’t think Bermuda is worth it, or if we can’t compete then it is our fault. We have the real estate, we had the attitude. Today the challenge is whether we have the ability.

  10. US Observer says:

This is a great idea and will bring potential business to the ole town of St. George. I remember when this town was a booming place for Bermuda. To the developers: Keep in mind when developing that you build a much higher elevation and walls high enough for protection. During a storm and high tides, the water lever increases and spills over into the town square just a few feet away.

The ideal spot would be the old Marginal Wharf area but that now be longs to Ewart and friends. Corporation property……oh well….

As for Mr. Gibbons comments, Bermuda is totally differant from the east coast and does not even compare. You can pull over there anywhere. Out here yah gotta find the place and then navigate according to weather et al.

    And if you can get 150 yatchs in summer….@ 1000 a night…never mind…………

  12. The Hyatt name will be a great draw and the hotel will be stunning for sure. Something to look forward to.

Great news for St. George’s and Bermuda!!! Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t this the same area that flooded out during Igor’s visit??? I’m just staying…

  14. Ryan Whiting says:

Why is there a complaint over price? What other resort on-island offers rooms outside of that price range?

As well, you’d be hard-pressed to find upscale accommodation in somewhere such as, say, Manhattan, outside of those prices.
