BBC: Nahki Wells Aims For Wembley Debut

March 1, 2011

nahki wells footballCarlisle United striker Nahki Wells may become the third Bermudian to appear at Wembley Stadium if he is selected to play in April’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.

Fellow Bermudians Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne played at Wembley — England’s national stadium — for Manchester City and Stoke.

And now 20-year-old Mr. Wells now hopes to follow in their footsteps when Carlisle United  battles it out at Wembley on Sunday, April 3 against Brentford in the JPT final.

“This is a big opportunity for me,” the Bermuda international and former Dandy Town and Bermuda Hogges frontman told BBC’s “Late Kick Off” today [March 1]. “I need to stay focussed, work hard to get in the team, and if I get my chance, I’m looking forward to it.”

The  BBC video report on Mr. Wells can be seen here.

Mr. Wells signed a five-month contract with League One’s Carlisle at the beginning of the year, a deal he hopes will be extended if he proves his worth on the field.

Earlier this month Carlisle manager Greg Abbott told a British newspaper his young Bermudian protege was edging closer to a first team place after continuing to impress the club in training.

“He’s got pace, great attitude, he’s a threat, he gets in behind defenders, he can take people on, and his use of the ball is good,”  Mr. Abbott told the BBC today. “We want to encourage him, because the lad wants a helping hand and deserves as big an opportunity as possible.”

This is such a wonderful accomplishment! I wish this young man much success as he pursues his dreams. Amidst all the negativity that we see far to often, it’s wonderful to see stories of young Bermudians (particularily our young men) who are doing us all proud. I only wish that stories like these received the volume of feedback that the negative stories do. I truly believe that young people like this young man are the majority, but its the criminal actions of the minority that dominate the discussion boards. Those who are quick to join in a discussion following a shooting will rarely find the time to post comments and offer words of encouragement for young people like Nahki. A quick glance at the number of comments posted for the previous article versus the number seen here will confirm this sad truth. If we as a community redirected some of our energies into encouraging and supporting the positive contributions of our young people we just might see some of the negative trends reversing.
