Basketball: Sullivan Named Island Games MVP
Following the Island Games men’s basketball medal ceremony last week in the Isle of Wight, Sullivan Phillips received the Golden Ball award after being named Tournament MVP.
The MVP honour is not a Bermuda-specific award, it is given by the Island Games committee to the most valuable player from all the participating islands.
Each Head Coach submitted three names of players they thought deserved recognition, as being the player most valuable to their team’s success. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.
The 6ft 5″ athlete ranks as one of the few Bermudians to have played professional basketball, and has played professionally with a number of teams from European nations including Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary and England.
The Bermuda Men’s Basketball team went in as the defending champions and successfully defended their title, becoming the first team to ever win back to back Gold medals at the Island Games. They started off their competition by completely crushing the Norwegian island of Froya 129 to 13.
