Today: Rally Against Bus Drivers Strike

August 18, 2011

A Facebook event has been posted calling for a rally against the bus drivers strike from 12:30pm – 2:30pm today [Aug.18] at City Hall.

The event text says, “Its time to show the Brother Chris Furbert, and the Bus Drivers that we are tired of their antics and their view that they can hold this island hostage at any given time.

“I implore those of you that are not reliant on buses for transportation, please offer rides to anyone that might be stranded due to the frivolous actions of the BIU and the Drivers. Let’s show them what Bermudians are truly made of.

“It is the responsibility of the government to run the county, not that of the Union nor the bus drivers. As such, the government should stand their ground and uphold the PTBs decision to fire driver Jennifer Harvey.

“By meeting today at City Hall, let’s send a clear message to our Government, the BIU and the Bus Drivers that we, as a people, have grown weary of their abuse of power by continuously threatening strike action.

“This is no longer a stand off between the Government and the Drivers, it is now a stand-off with the entire island. Government, DO NOT back down!”

  1. Motts Apple Sauce says:

I think it is time for the BIU to seriously consider a change in leadership.

    • Black Soil says:

Tru dat!! The BIU need leaders that raise us Up. Not bring us down.

  2. bina says:

Government needs to drop the bus drivers department and let them become a private entity without union rules and run it like a private business. There will be no more stricking!!!

    • Scott says:

the problem is that you cant just privatize the problem away. driving buses requires training and time before you can hire.. and its not a service that can just wait until you’ve rehired everyone. And the drivers know this. Regardless of who their boss is, they cant be just fired/rehired without a huge hit to the public.

its a nice thought thought, but privatizing wont fix anythign except take the cost off of the taxpayer.

  3. Christopher says:

Just like Frivolous lawsuits, Frivolous Union actions should not be tolerated.

  4. good luck says:

This should be an interesting Labor/labour Day. Those speeches will be interesting!

    • Overly Concerned says:

To me it will sound no different than the quacking of ducks or the sound that the teacher makes in the Charlie Brown cartoons. They’ve hit a wall when it comes to their rhetoric and no amount of posturing, spin or otherwise should make the average man on the street feel any more sympathy for them.

I’m predicting either lunatic fringe or severely muted speeches.

  5. Triangle Drifter says:

And why cannot the buses, & any number of other Government services, be privatised.

As public transport, run privately, government will still have to subsidize it. It could never be self supporting. However, being privately run by motivated people, as most selfmade business people are, the cost will be less to the taxpayer & there will be profit in it for the business owner.

Bus drivers & the allied workers sitting on the walls today need to think hard on what they have done. Rent day is coming soon for those paying rent. The mortgage payment is due for those paying for a house. Neither the landlord nor the bank is going to want to hear about why you went on strike & give you a break. You don’t deserve one. The grocery stores won’t offer credit either. How about the payment on that buff car?

Your financial future looks bleak. Maybe Chris, Laverne, Derek, even Ottie will help you. They seem to have done well off your back.

  6. Relax! says:

Does anyone know what the name of the event of FB is? I can’t find it.

  7. The Rock says:

    let us join the PRO-test!!!

  8. Eastern says:

There is no reason why the bus service (and the ferry service) could not be privatized (and should be). Go to the Caribbean and see how some coutries have privatised their transportation system.
This is the only way that the government can get out of this debt hole that they are in. Individual drivers and transportation companies simply apply for a route, pay for a permit for that route and the government will actually make money off of their transportation system instead of losing millions as they are now.
You screw up or fail a drug test and your permit is pulled and sold to someone else.
Which political party is grab this and run with it?????

    Hello…..are you there?

    • Emeka47 says:

Best solution so far. Like the taxi service, you will have to work for your earnings. Govt can charge an annual fee like the mini buses, and use the facilities of the govvt to service and park the busses, or ideally a company who can buy the ferry and bus services from Govt. Why not stop there, outsource the Docks, Sanitation workers as well. This is too messy, tired of all the SH*#t … Who will they strike against then?

  9. Smh says:

Why meet at City Hall? Why not BIU Headquarters?

  10. techin says:

I showed up and it was only like 10 people. Bermuda is not quite ready for change. All the non-supporters of the strike calling and blogging and maybe 1% showed up? Why?

    • Rockfish#1and#2 says:

People are busy transporting visitors and locals around.( especially seniors who have doctor/dental appointments)

  11. Not Surprised says:

Cant be there :-( You have my support tho!!!!

  12. second says:

Sorry I cannot be there today but I fully support your efforts. Thanks to those drivers who are still working this morning.

Please Government don’t back down. We have people who need work but there must be some who are already able to drive a bus in the Bda Regiment. Let’s take back control of Bermuda and get it out of wannabe leaders’ hands.

All this because of one person who did not follow the procedures and she’s the only one who knows why she didn’t. We’ll never know! What nonsense!
