September 28, 2011

A.S Cooper and Sons, Ltd. announced today [Sept.28] that they will be sponsoring Miss Bermuda Jana Outerbridge in her bid to become the next Miss World in London this November.

Miss Outerbridge will receive a number of outfits from the A.S. Cooper Group of stores that will assist with her wardrobe requirements for the 3 week trip to the UK for the duration of the Miss World festivities.

Miss Outerbridge is pictured below with A.S.Cooper’s Jim Leamy:

“We are extremely happy to support our home grown talent as Bermuda re-enters the Miss World contest after a long hiatus. Jana is not only beautiful but intelligent, well spoken and extremely poised. She will be a great spokesperson for our island, ” A.S. Cooper Managing Director Somers Cooper commented.

Ms Outerbridge, who represented St. George’s, was crowned the 2011 Miss Bermuda on June 12th, beating 15 other competitors for the title.

The 22-year-old is a graduate of Tennessee State University and participated in the Cabinet Office Jumpstart Programme working as a Cabinet Office intern. An accomplished equestrian, she has represented Bermuda internationally and was a member of the Gold Medal winning team in the 2004 CEF.

Cooper’s are providing designer outfits from brands such as Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Jones New York and Nic & Zoe. Miss Bermuda will also make an appearance at A.S. Cooper’s this Friday evening for Hamilton’s Fashion Night Out which runs until 8pm.

She will be sporting some of the items from her new A.S. Cooper wardrobe on the “Black Carpet” in front of the Main Store on Front Street.

Wonderful, she is a beautiful young lady, and deserves the best. Props to Coopers.

    • Black Soil says:

As I understand her personality is as beautiful as her looks. I also understand the country which she is representing has a govt which does not want to provide any support. I have seen the govt has plenty of money for lavish travels….but not a dime for Miss Bermuda. What’s wrong with that Mr&Mrs Bermuda? Hats off to Coopers!!!

  2. cocoa says:

  6. Mama Mia says:

Thanks AS Coopers for stepping up to the plate!

  7. Depressed says:

Kudos to Coopers for helping out. Not sure when Jana would wear the clothes she is shown in though – this is a Miss World Competion, not a trip to London for fun. I guess they’ll be good for the flight. When will Jana be photographed in her role as a contestant for Miss World? In nearly every photo and appearance she is covered from head to feet.

  8. K.T.B. says:

It warms my heart to see one of our local business making such a wonderful donation to a worthy cause, it really says a lot. After reading this story I actualy feel more inclined to shop there. Good job Coopers!

    • L.M. says:

I’m with you K.T.B.!!! Coopers absolutely has my vote!!! I definately feel influenced to shop at A.S. Coopers MORE knowing that they are socially responsible and support Bermuda and Bermudians! A definate leader amongst other establishments.

  9. Truth (Original) says:

Oh snap ! The evil white man is supporting the beautiful black girl in her effort to represent Bermuda well. That’s so confusing because I thought that the Pro Black Government would have stepped in to support her in her journey. I guess color doesn’t matter after all.

Blessings to you Jana and I am proud of you already.

  10. It is what it is says:

Thank you A.S. Coopers for your kindness and support.

  11. Haile to Bermuda says:

I wish you all the best African queen…

  12. B, a Lady says:

Coopers will now get my hard earned dollar. Not Gibbons, Cecile’s, English Sports Shop, Boutique CC or Perry Shoes. Congratulations to Miss Bermuda and Coopers.

  13. VJ says:

Bermuda Government should be ashamed of themselves for not stepping up to the plate and supporting Miss Bermuda. Imagine of all the free publicity Bermuda will reap WHEN she wins (thinking positive here Jana!) Bet they’ll want to jump on the bandwagon and claim her then! Hats off to Cooper’s for supporting our own!

  14. Shar says:

Well done Coopers! Go Jana! Proud of you girl!

  15. A Fan says:

It is really very very discouraging what this government has chosen to spend it’s money on. Lavish travel, helping their cronies, dining out, with no thought for the ordinary tax paying citizen or his family…so sad they can’t even come up with the $ for Jana. She is homegrown talent with grace, dignity and deceny – a true role model for our young folk.

She is Miss Tourism in my books by representing Bermuda at Miss World’s.

Go for it Jana! Do it with the enthusiasm and tenacity you showed jumping your pony – Royal!

  16. Leisurely says:

I will be shopping at AS Cooper Man on Front Street for some new RL polos, tees and DKNY jeans tomorrow!

  17. Rockfish#1 says:

Good luck Jana—Hats off to Coopers!

  18. Just Curious says:

Thanks AS Cooper, UR on my holiday shopping list too!

  19. Explanation says:

Can someone help me understand why Jana is having to stand in front of Phoenix and has to go on TV asking for support. The company who put on the Ms Bermuda pageant is a bridal shop why isn’t her wardrobe being sponsored by them. When they decided to do the show was there no sponsorship in place for the winner to be able to have all her expenses paid. For real why is it that we ask our young people to show pride in their country when their country never does things in the right way. No way should Jana be asking for money to represent her country!!!!! Luckily she is a strong, intelligent and motivated woman. Do you think the other countries are asking their representatives to raise money or ask companies to sponsor their wardrobe, hotel and airline. All of that is in place. For real if you were not able to get the proper support to enable the winner to be able to go to London without having to go through all of this than you should not have put the competition on. If I am wrong in my thinking please make me understand!!! Jana so very proud on you!!!

    • WTH???? says:

I so agree with you Explanation, like i understand every one being mad at the Government for not helping her out but what i think you all need to understand is that the Government are not the one who had the competition. It would have been nice if they was able to do more then just pay for her plan ticket but last i checked if YOU are the one running a show and YOU make a promise and tell the whole Bermuda that the winner will go off to be in Miss World then i think that YOU should have has all your ducks in a row. Thats like me having something adn saying the winner will get a prize then when they win i say im sorry i didn’t have money for it. THINK about it people, please i feel very sorry that Jana had to go out and ask for money. Yes i understand that the lady who put it on had asked people for help and most turned her down, then that is when she should have thought of a better way to raise money for Jana to get to Miss World and have everything she needs. IT IS NO ONE ELSE’S PROBLEM BUT HER’S THAT JANA HAD TO GO THROW ALL OF THIS.
And i just read in The Royal Gazette that she wants to send some one Miss World every year from now on. PAUSE so your tryna tell me we are gonna have to deal with this again next year? Or is she gonna have all her ducks in a row??

  20. LOLA says:

Go Jana, at least your getting support somewhere!!! BDA Government should step up to the plate especially the Tourism Minister. But good luck, hold ya head up high, and show them what we got to offer!!! Miss Bermuda all the way, cant wait til November.

  21. JUNO says:

That’s real nice. A.S. Coopers you rock!!Good Luck girl

  22. Danielle says:

While I am glad that Jana has received support from A.S. Coopers, I think that it is not her responsibility to be seeking sponsorship to attend Ms. World. Where is the lady who organized Miss Bermuda? This lady when planning for Miss Bermuda should have also been preparing her finances for Miss World, especially if it is in Jana’s contract that she is to attend Miss World. This lady needs to be held accountable and if she could not find sponsorship then she should not have had Miss Bermuda. This is ridiculous and tacky that Jana is left to fend for herself. It is not the responsibility of these companies in Bermuda to be sponsoring Jana at the last minute, yes it would have been nice, but they should not be made to feel bad about saying no. This is the Bermudian mentality where everyone assumes they are owed something and things can be carried out at the last minute.

On the other hand, let Jana win Miss World and see how many will be basking in her glory. Furthermore if anyone should be sponsoring her it’s Department of Tourism and Department of Culture (does that one still exist?), but again these departments should have been contacted for sponsorship when Miss Bermuda pageant was being planned. Shame on that lady..whoever she is!

  23. jury says:

Congratulations to Jana!!! And a BIG THANK YOU to the Owners and Directors of A.S. Coopers for being her sponsor. I don’t know this young lady but I am positive that she will represent Bermuda to the best of her ability.

To the Department of Tourism you are putting your $$$$ in the wrong places. The only thing that you have done is purchase her airline tickets (maybe) at a discount speak volumes. SHE is an Ambassador for your/her country. Your department has spent more money on sending the GOMBEYS overseas on one day trips. Put your $$$ in real TOURISM.

To the ORGANIZERS of the Miss Bermuda pageant, the next time you brand for our beautiful young ladies to come forth and represent their parishes with the hopes of obtaining the Miss Bermuda title. You as the organizers should have obtained the majority of the sponsors for the lucky winner. When our Miss Bermuda represents and does exceptionally well in the Miss World contest, I guarantee you as the organizers and the Dept of Tourism will be the first persons to take all the accolades.

Jana I wish you ALL THE BEST!!!!

  24. Local Shopper says:

THIS is why I shop locally. What goes around comes around. Hmm – don’t see those overseas shops helping out here, with all those Bermudians shopping overseas……..
Well done Cooper’s. Jana is a beautiful young lady, and will be a wonderful ambassador for Bermuda. Best wishes for the upcoming competition.

    :-D

  25. WTH???? says:

I wish you people would STOP putting it all on the BDA Gov. They did NOT have the show. Yes they have sent the gombeys away for one day trip but that was in hope of BUILDING tourism.

The lady who held the show is to be at blame for not having all her ducks in a row! Maybe she should have asked the person who last held the Miss Bermuda show back in 1997 how he went about having it and how he made out fine with out having to ask bermudians to help send soem one away, after all SHE said the winner will go off to Miss World.

Everyone is only to assume that everything was all paid for.

    • Depressed says:

Summed up pretty well again. This was a privately run event, nothing to do with Governemnt. Government probably was approached which is more than likely considering Jana was working at the Cabinet Office. Maybe they did some checking and decided that subsidizing something such as this opens them up to subsidizing anyone and everyone who wants to attend events overseas. Unlike participating at say the Olympics where there are rigorous qualifying requirements so only the best can represent their country, there are few qualification requirements to take a “trip” to Miss World.
