Shooting: Noet Barnett Sentenced To 25 Years

February 15, 2012

[Updated] Noet Barnett was sentenced to 25 years this morning [Feb.15] after being found guilty of attempted murder. He must serve half his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Mr Barnett, 25, was accused of shooting Jeremiah “Rocks” Dill on October 4, 2010 on Parsons Road by the One Stop Variety Store.

The two men were friendly before the shooting; Mr Barnett is the godfather of Mr Dill’s daughter, and was also dating his sister.

During the trial the Court heard that Mr Barnett was affiliated with 42, while the shooting victim was said to be affiliated with Parkside. The jury was also shown a video of Mr Barnett and a group of men handling a gun and making threats against the Parkside gang.

The Court also heard that the gun used to shoot Mr Dill had been used in other shootings, including the murder of Raymond Troy “Yankee” Rawlins in 2010.

Update: The video below shows Mr Barnett, and well as pedophile Dennis Eldridge leaving Court. Mr Barnett can be seen gesturing to the media.

Justice Carlyle Greaves ruled that Mr Barnett must serve at least 12.5 years before he can be considered for parole.

Lead Prosecutor Rory Field, QC reminded the Justice that Mr Barnett was a member of ’42 gang’ and that gang violence was a prevalent crime that was endangering the well-being of Bermuda’s entire community.

Justice Greaves also heard Defence Counsel Pearman read in a letter, written on Mr Barnett’s behalf. The letter was from Ms Shelagh Cooper, a well-known social advocate, who said that she and her family had known Noet Barnett for many years.

She had first come into contact with him when he was a very young child and just after his father had been murdered. Ms Cooper pointed out that Mr Barnett’s life had not been a good one and that it seemed to have begun with an inability to even give him a correct name. She said that, born close to Christmas, his mother wanted to name him Noel.

However, a typographical error at the Registry Office resulted in him being called and known as Noel right up to the time of his first brush with the law, when it turned out that his legal registered name was actually Noet.

She described how he and his siblings had grown up in crowded living conditions, had been homeless for a while, his mother had been sent to prison for four years, an uncle had been murdered, he had not done well at school and had been expelled from school when he was 14.

Ms Cooper said, in her letter, that attempts to get the Ministry of Education to supply or arrange counseling services or psychological evaluations had not succeeded and that Noet had learning difficulties at Dellwood Middle School.

Ms Cooper said that in the two years before his arrest for this attempted murder, he had been shot at three times.

Offered the opportunity to speak, Mr Barnett elected to remain silent. As he was led away to begin his sentence, he was grabbed and hugged by a female family member. Prison officers separated them.

Time already served will be taken into consideration.

you fell in the trap too? but the difference is we can say “maybe” you dont kno any betta? lol cuz your JUST about 9 in a 26 year old frame! lol at yu dummie!

  2. Well I Never says:

Another menace to society wasting his life with guns and gangs in an island too small for this foolishness. May you find God’s Word and Love while your freedom is on hold for at least 12.5 years and pray you change your ways before gaining your freedom again! With the antichrist devouring every area of this society, time is running out for those who want God’s everlasting life!

    • Think About It says:

@Well I Never- Yes, it’s the antichrist that is the problem with society, not the government and the people.

Man I love Christians, always good for a laugh or two

  3. ella says:

What an a$$! You put your shite on video?
To those that were involved in getting a conviction – I APPLAUD YOU, YOU WERE NOT AFRAID TO SPEAK UP – NEXT!

  4. Armchair Psychologist says:

How about we start making criminals serve ALL of their sentence? What’s the point in giving hefty sentences if the convicted party doesn’t serve anywhere near that? I know this is something that happens worldwide and not just in Bermuda but it pisses me off. It’s clearly done this way to appease society who is pleased when the heavy sentences are handed out, but the whole thing is misleading if that’s not what will be actually served.

I also know that if they don’t cooperate in prison they may not be released early but the whole thing just seems like a scam because most-if not all-ARE released early. If they’re going to do just 12.5 years (out of 25), just give them 12 years from the start so at least the public can accurately estimate when these sociopaths will be released back into society…

    • Think About It says:

They get released early because the government is paying $80,000+ per prisoner, per year, and they can’t afford to keep them locked up for their full sentence

      • Tommy Chong says:

This is why if the government insists on the criminalization of cannabis they need to change the punishment of those prosecuted with possession. If they allowed all the guys imprisoned for “ONLY” cannabis possession out on house arrest fitted with electronic bracelets government could afford to keep violent criminals in longer.

  5. God Sees All says:

Even tho he has a mindframe of a 5 yr old child i still dont feel sorry for him… Lock dem ALL up… IDIOTS

  6. Tommy Chong says:

Barnett needs to be put in a prisoner exchange program with some other country. His head is going to swell at westgate with all the props he’ll get. Being there will just make his mind worse.

  7. check again says:

Question – Shouldn’t prisoners be cuffed when being escorted from court? The “gesturing” doesnt appear to show any handcuffs.

  8. Family says:

I h@te bloggers…all you @ssholes do is sit behind a computer anonymously and write idiodic comments yet none of you lazy f@cks get off ya arses and make a stand on this tiny island. we would rather talk about everyone that has made a bad decision rather than help thenm and others coming behind us make the right decisions…its so sad cause i bet most of you all’s children do dumb things too or have relatives that do silly things that may put them in the same predicament. I dont have time to sit here and blog but today i just feel like venting because bermuda as a whole are a bunch of pussies because if parkside or 42nd or MOB , etc.terrorise your neighborhood or any one in relation to you none of you stand the h@ll up to them then if the police arent doing enough for you, you all are quick to blast them as well and im tired of it because if you can talk shyt all day why cant you take that energy and put it to a good use? now i know most of you will write back and try and scrutinize me but i dont care because i am out there actively trying to help my communities while you idiots sit here and down the young black males whom have been mislead by not only their parents and families but by their environments and the past and present govt. i feel so sorry for this island and the people here are so mentally trapped so like fake christians continue to bask in everyone else’s short commings while you do nothing to help the cause. negative bloggers are idiots! all our young men who are on the wrong path i pray for you and i hope god can hit your soul to make you change! amen! else for bloggers with idiodic comments, fall of earth because you’re an addition to this BS…

    • Ambassador .. says:

      Well, that was interesting…

    • Tommy Chong says:

Is it that time of the month Family?

Bad decisions are smoking weed next to a police station or pack racing not shooting someone. This is an immoral & evil decision & I’m sure Noet felt the pull of his human conscience but brushed the feeling aside & thats why he is where he is.

The reason parkside, 42nd & mob hang around the neighborhoods they do is because they have no qualms about exploiting their own. I lived back of town as a kid with my godparents & would pass the whitewall guys & say what’s up but would never look up to them. There’s no excuse or sympathy for those with a wicked heart.

    • JT says:

well that’s the pot calling the kettle black…i bet your sitting behind a computer as well typing your comments just like the rest of us…dreamer

    • confused says:

      ummm… WHAT?

  12. BuBBleS!! says:

The Noel that I know is not the person he is portrayed as in the media. Please keep in mind, the media has one main goal, it does not include relaying an honest opinion but to hit targeted sales…may it be slandering a reputation or printing outright lies. However.

Like most human beings everyone has two sides to them mix in a troubled background, lack of support to acknowledge issues formed as a result of growing in a troubled background and a child has two choices

    1. Break the cycle and make something great out of your life or
    2. Repeat the cycle and continue what they witnessed whilst growing and developing

I speak from an upbringing that was very troubled and still ultimately effects me and will continue to effect me for all the days of my life. However the difference between myself and Mr. Barnett is that my exhaust for breaking my unevitable cycle was my education.Of which I speak for the minority who were able to break the cycle. Unfortunately, school…university is not for everyone, studies and science have proved that men are more successful at practical occupations ie trades.

Possibly, Mr. Barnett could have had an exhaust from the circumstances beyond his control if a trades school still did exist. Maybe if the youths who come from troubled backgrounds can have a sense of pride in their future if there was a sense of opportunity. But for the majority of black men from middle class families resort to an easy escape and who could blame their sense of direction. When hope seems so frail.

Noel keep your head well above water and stay true to yourself. The good Lord above he alone maintains the sole right to judge you and no one else. Many speculate few rarely understand. Many who blog these senseless comments rarely consider the events one has endured and the effect it has on a child, pre adult, or adult mentally and emotionally and if they did they wouldn’t sound blatantly stupid. But oops I forget in Bermuda one person’s experience seems to be everyone’s experience and therefore they think they know every fact! Jackasses!

STAY STRONG…REMAIN UNMOVED&STAND FIRM. GOD BLESS NOEL
