  4. Redundant Bermudian says:

    Only 7 Contestants, Very Sad.

Good Luck Ladies. May the Best Diva Win.

  5. TheFuture says:

7 is too many. Parading women on stage and picking the best one in 2012?

  6. Y.N.W.A. says:

It sucks that most photographers in BDA feel the need to photoshop their pictures to death. Anyone can throw on some make up and have their photos edited to look better. How about they show these women natural, so that we can really see who the true beauty’s are?

    • Frank says:

My question is why were they not allowed to wear clothing????? Is nudity in the pictures a requirement? Or are we just supposed to ‘think’ that they are naked? Please photo shop some clothes onto these young ladies next time. The general public does not need to be imagining young ladies naked.

      Totally unnecessary! Totally tasteless.

      • Sharmaine Landy - 4th Runner Up 2011 says:

OMG! Sigh…they are not naked (shaking my head)

A beauty shot is normally meant to reveal the face, decolletage, and shoulder – they are simply wearing strapless tops.

Do you not go to the beach? Should all females wear bathing suits that have straps and not be allowed to wear something strapless? If your mind automatically goes to what is below and you cannot appreciate the beautiful faces then I have nothing more to say…WOW

      • BermudaFlava says:

FFS just because you can’t see the rest of their body doesn’t mean they are naked!! Smh, use common sense man!!

    • Sharmaine Landy - 4th Runner Up 2011 says:

These are “beauty” shots and airbrushing is to be expected in order to achieve the finish product that is desired.

I happen to know two of the contestants and they are definitely not overly airbrushed – they still look very much like themselves.

Even on an international level pageant contestant photos look like those of a model – that’s just how it is.

There will be plenty of time to see them in person leading up to the pageant as I am sure they will be making public appearances within the community.

      • TRUTH HURTS! says:

Well if it’s a beauty contest they shouldn’t be editing their faces (airbrushing). Shouldn’t their true looks be shown? Anyway Rachel Sawden was robbed last year, that girl is stunning.

        • Sharmaine Landy - 4th Runner Up 2011 says:

Shaking my head…you just don’t get it.

        • K.T.B. says:

          @ truth hurts
Yes Rachel was/is stunning but she completly bubbled her last question on the night of the competion which is why she LOST! If you were there that night you would have seen what judges saw, get over it.
FYI: being able to form a complete sentence helps when you’re trying to win Miss Bermuda :-D

          • TRUTH HURTS! says:

I don’t have to “get over” anything. I don’t care. I don’t know her. I’m talking looks wise she was the best. So like I said she was robbed because she was the prettiest. Mistakes happen. i’m sure that’s not why she lost….but we won’t go there :)

          • Steve Anthony says:

The girl who won repeated herself at least 3 times and didn’t even answer the question. Perhaps the organizer could publish the scores like Miss World does to put all questions to rest, or perhaps explain why it took 45 minutes to calculate the scores of the final 5!

I don’t know what the judges saw, but after I sat down and opened the pageant program, when I saw a contestant who took up the entire inside cover of the program thanking everyone for this milestone in her life, I knew what the outcome would be immediately.

If it came down to the final answer, Channing should have won. Her answer was flawless, endearing and full of her sweet personality. Please enlighten me as to why she didn’t win if the final question was the decider.

          • Ben Pewter says:

            K.T.B:

F.Y.I: Rachel Sawden graduated from McGill University, one of the world’s best universities after graduating from high school with distinction and receiving honours every year. In addition to presenting the weather and stocks on VSB, she also runs two businesses, one of which is an award winning website which is revolutionizing marketing in Bermuda. She is one of the most intelligent and ambitious people I have ever met… Maybe she stumbled a bit on the night due to nerves, but to say she can’t put a sentence together is asinine and ridiculous.

It’s a shame she didn’t get to represent Bermuda as she is one Bermuda’s best and could easily compete and excel on an international level.

            • amen says:

I’m going to guess and say K.T.B is a relative of the “winner”. Nerves, mistakes, things happen. Stumbling on your words or whatever it was that happened doesn’t mean she can’t put together a sentence. K.T.B sounds like a hater mad because we all know who the true winner should have been.

              • Fair Play says:

To say that Rachel lost last year because of how she answered the last question is ridiculous. Did the final question and response make up 95% of the marks? Why did it take nearly 1 hour before the “winner” was announced? Had there been an independent auditor the decision would have been made within 5 minutes. This is promoted as a beauty pageant, not a speech contest. No wonder the “winner” failed so miserably in Miss World.

            • .am says:

Rachel’s issue was that her answers were centered around herself (travel) rather than the community (mirrors). I think she realized this just prior to closing and made a very (visibly) desperate attempt to amend this – and it was then that things went to pot.

Whilst I’m sure Rachel will be far more informed than I with regard to the scoring process, I’ve always been user the impression that the final two rounds are somewhat independent of the more superficial side of the competition and your answers will either make or break you.

If you royally bugger it up, you can’t expect to win. It’s  a pretty simple concept, and you could see she had a pretty sound understanding of this by the look on her face.

External to Rachel: the problem with this competition is that they’re applying ‘our’ (using the term loosely) ‘standards’ (even more so) of beauty to the judging, rather than what is perceived as internationally beautiful. How anyone with a gut and/or a derrière the size of Middletown was even considered is beyond me. Most of the other contestants (Internationally) look (and train) like VS models.

It would have been interesting to see how things would have turned out had someone like Jordan Robbins entered. Selfless, beautifully spoken, very well educated and agency represented (Sutherland/Ford).

        • Starman says:

Rachel Sawden is a hottie! The only reason why I watch VSB news!! (((AIRHORN)))

          • Tongue-in-cheek says:

I agree about Rachel…I was SURE she was going to win. So what if she flubbed one question, K.T.B.? She had the look and the organizers could always work with her to prepare her for the international stage. It’s easier to work on the other stuff (other countries do it) than make a woman beautiful who isn’t. There’s only so much you can do with hair, wardrobe etc. Bermuda needs to get with it and start sending girls to these competitions who can actually win. If you’re going to enter a beauty contest, how about we send someone who is actually beautiful for a change?

Unfortunately, the really beautiful girls don’t enter the competitions. We have some really stunning women walking around these isles but they’re not interested in competing and I don’t really blame them since we seem to have half blind judges making the decisions…

          • Alex says:

Can we vote for Rachel again??

            • Harry P says:

              When’s the news on?

              • Come correct says:

Right after Professor Dumbledor makes his presentation on muggles in 2012 you f@cking wanker.

  11. K.T.B. says:

You look beautiful ladies!! It really takes a lot of courage and confidence to put yourselves out there and I am very proud of all of you for representing. Please enjoy the experience and try to ignore all the haters who will no doubt be posting nasty comments as the competition draws near.

    • Bob's Uruncle says:

If you are asking people not to hate on the current contestants, don’t be a hypocrite and hate on any past contestants.

      Good luck ladies!

  12. WinterSun says:

Ms. Pembroke, Chelsea Furtado, looks like she could win and represent Bemuda well with her smile full of sunshine!

    All the best ladies…

    • Tongue-in-cheek says:

Chelsea is really pretty…I hope she has the height; if so, she’d be perfect. Beautiful smile and hair…she looks like a winner!

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

She is pretty but sorry this is Bermuda.

Call it like I see it.

LOL politics on my brain today. specially after listening to Sherry and her commenters on 102.7.

  13. Bermy Yella says:

Good luck Lene, Dwanae n Dashunte!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Pastor Syl says:

Good luck all! If your heart, soul and brains match your looks, Bermuda is blessed indeed!

  15. Pastor Syl says:

@ Frank: What makes you think they are nude? Did you see different pics than I did? If you didn’t, your imagination must be somewhere in the gutter! How about strapless tops? Ever heard of them?

    • ABC says:

lol a pastor remarkin on nudity WERES UR MIND

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

        come on it’s all God’s creation………………….

        LOL

  16. What a day....baffled says:

Beautiful photos – eye makeup to heavy…………..

  17. pebblebeach says:

Beautifully photoshopped…good luck to all…guess the interest is dying as only 7 ladies entered…

    • K.T.B. says:

Wow, passive aggressive much? It’s more likely all the other 17-25 year olds are either pregnant, have kids, are in college, or don’t have the courage to sign up. Can’t say I blame them, I wouldn’t want to deal with all the nasty comments either.

    • pepper says:

Why in hell do these young ladies think about their looks? who the hell cares who wins a beauty contest ? young ladies it is not about your bust or hip size or what you weight is ….. get a life and use your brain not your body…….

  18. Jai says:

Go Girls/Ladies without the ‘cake’ its an over kill!

  19. Paw Paw says:

Ahhh…did I see an arm tatoo on the first contestant?

I don’t recall seeing VISIBLE tatoos on the overseas contestants?

  20. Jammys says:

Go Devonshire and Pembroke! Send the rest home….

  21. The Hell says:

@Sharmaine Landy. Thank you for setting the Amish folks straight. The idea is to show there beauty, skin, eyes and face etc. A woman’s shoulders are the front lines of her mystique, and her neck. A no-man’s land in that battle between the mind and the body. I know they have clothes on and if they did have something on up to their necks it can be a distraction from seeing their true beauty. Please people this isn’t the 1940′s etc..

  22. expat renegade says:

Great to see a lot of white folks in the competition.

  23. SeaSide says:

I think the makeup is fantastic! They are beauty shots, I think they all look like super models, photoshop
Or not the makeup is perfect. Who is this O’Faces person? I have heard the name several times and how do I get a hold of her… I want to get my face done.

  24. hmmm says:

Reading these comments I realize that there r really some sickos out there.

  25. island girl says:

Ladies, please ignore the negative comments above, some people have minds as small as their successes. Those who are not comfortable within themselves find the need to express negativity towards others. Hold your heads high, and do your best July 8. Hold this experience as an experience to remember, and tell your children about once you marry and have a family. There is absolutely no need to bring up last year’s contest and contestants, but as mentioned when you have a small mind, and nothing better to do your thoughts are limited. All the best to each and everyone of you,and each one of you are beautiful in your own way. Remember in life, IGNORE IGNORANCE. Some of human-kind are obnoxious and small-minded.

  26. HotMama says:

Three of the best….goo Dwanae, Roe and Dee…you’re all gorg. but these are my picks…wohoooo!!!!!

  27. SKMAN says:

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DESHONA!!!!!

  28. BermudaFlava says:

I swear the ppl that made negative comments about the photos are from another planet…there isn’t a photographer in the world that doesn’t retouch their photos!! And clearly the photos were approved by the client, if not it would not be presented on Bernews so get over it!! The ignorance is appalling and if you don’t know a damn thing about photography, shut up with you’re negative comments because you sound like idiots!!
Anyway, shout out to Anthony Francis and O’Faces for beautiful work and good luck to all the ladies. Rochelle Minors to win!!! Team Sandys all day baby!!

  29. Penny says:

Good luck Dwanae – you look gorgeous there darling but I KNOW for a fact you’re gorgeous looking in real life as well. I’ll be watching!!

  30. Paw Paw says:

For the Rachael Sawden fans, she is last years’ news.

Although she is naturally beautiful and educated, it would benefit her to enroll in elocution lessons to improve her voice, diction and the obvious articulation problems that she has when she is presenting the VSB nightly weather report.

    • Fair Play says:

You’re right there bye! No umm umms at all, or unintelligle ramblings. She needs to work on that, but what has the weather got to do with the Pageant?

    • BdaLuvin says:

How is she last year’s news? This is a press release for 2012 Miss Bermuda contestants and most of the comments are about Rachael Sawden?
Rachel is very well educated as per Ben Pewter’s comment above and I assure you that McGill has very high standards unlike most American Universities.
Rachel Sawden was definitely robbed of the title last year BUT not winning Miss Bermuda 2011 has taken her further. She is an amazing role model and is admired not only by young girls but prominent people in the Business world.
I do not see Miss Bermuda 2011 on VSB or any channel for that matter….
And all this BS about beauty is not skin deep, this is a BEAUTY pageant. You cannot say that while standing beside Miss Venezuela 2012 ….Let us not embarrass ourselves on the world stage… AGAIN.
Good Luck to all the contestants for 2012! Hope the judges make the right choice this year.

    • amen says:

Oh look another HATER. She’s obviously not last year’s news if everyone’s still talking about her. Have a seat cow. You’re probably jealous. I’d bet everything Rachel is smarter and prettier than you.

  31. Beautiful says:

Chelsy–those who know you, have already seen that your beauty is not just skin deep, but that you are beautiful from the inside out. I don’t know the other contestants, but my vote is for you—-intelligent, talented, and destined for great things! Have fun with this and look to your bright future ahead!

  32. And Winner Is says:

    I hope a female contestant wins…

  33. Paw Paw says:

@Bda Luvin..she was a contestant last year, so she is LAST YEAR’s News!!

I know several people who have attended and graduated from McGill University and if you would have read my post correctly, I did say that she was both well educated and beautiful.
Unfortunately for her, she has not mastered the art of public speaking, which would be an asset to her beauty.

May I ask you, do all beauty queens have to look like Rachel Sawden?

What was so much of an embarrasment of our last contestant?

Perhaps because she was of a darker hue and had natural short hair?

She certainly spoke well, even though she was educated at an American university and she is also a role model amongst her peers.

And why should she be on VSB Weather Channel when she is furthering her education?

Sounds like you’re a racist to me!!

    • amen says:

As someone mentioned above IF she has problems with public speaking she can work on it. A lot of beauty pageants help contestants on their so called weak areas. I’d rather a contestant represent us on the international level who actually has a chance to win than a contestant who has no shot and fails miserably like Miss Bermuda 2011 did. Let’s not act like beauty contests are actually about being an intellectual and being able to speak intelligently, that’s just an afterthought to not make it seem like it’s to objectify women. It’s truly based on looks.

“What was so much of an embarrasment of our last contestant?”
Uhhh she wasn’t the best that we could have sent from the group.

“Perhaps because she was of a darker hue and had natural short hair?”
That sounds like your own feelings coming to light. Her skin color and hair had nothing to do with it. Their are plenty of dark skinned beautiful women in this world. Miss Universe 2011 is dark and gorgeous. Stop projecting your own insecurities. Beauty has nothing to do with color.

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

All I can say is this is Bermuda 2012 right on right………………..lol

Lets be honest we all know why Rachel did not win although if I were judging I would have had a hard time of it too as I had at least three winners picked. In the end with the attitudes of the current climate of “newly empowered” she wasn’t going to win.

      • Yng Black Mind says:

        @Amen:

To all the bloggers on this site who are “hating” on Ms. Bermuda 2011, Ms. J Outerbridge – - please read this post.

I can respect your opinions, as you feel that Ms. R Sawden should have won the competition last year – - I do not agree, but I defend your right to your opinions.

However, I will explain why Ms. Sawden did not win the competition last year – it is fairly simple, actually.

She did not “wow” the judges in any catergory – - she was “good”, just not “excellent.” In contrast, Ms. Outerbridge was full of energy, excitement and passion the entire night – - her smile was “on” the whole night.

Now in regards to @Amen’s comments about Ms. Bermuda 2011′s representation at last year’s Ms. World – - it is a simple explanation again – - She did not receive the necessary support to compete.

Ms. World has 5 sections which the participants receive points towards their their total score – - Ms. Bermuda participated in 2 or 3 sections only. Additionally, she was not informed about the other sections until she arrived in London (this is the fault of the local organizer, Ms. Seymour, as it is her responsibilty to prepare our rep for the international competition). I can assure you that even if Ms. Sawden had been successful in her bid to become Ms. Bermuda last year, she would have been dealt the same result as our current rep, Ms. Outerbridge, was.

So please, before you assume you understand the situation, take some time to remember that Ms. Outerbridge has done an excellent job representing our country this year – - I am proud of her, as I am of Ms. Sawden and all the other participants from last year’s local pageant. They deserve our respect and our support – - all of them.

        Yng Black Mind
        (those who know understand)

        • Shaking the Head says:

You’re quite correct that the organizer was ill prepared for Miss World. However, I’m sure not all the Bermuda contestants would have relied on the organiser and instead they themslves would have fully researched the requirements and all the sections of the competition and known how the competiton is run. After all why enter to win if you don’t know what is involved? I’m afraid the “Miss Bermuda can win Miss World because Gina did” showed that few, including the organizer, did not know that you don’t just turn up on the night and parade around. The best thing that could have happened last year was for Miss Bermuda not to go to Miss World. If you don’t have a “Beauty with a Purpose” then it’s a waste of time and money.
No doubt the absence of any reference to the 2012 winner going to Miss World indicates that the lessons from 2011 have been learnt the hard way.

          • K.T.B. says:

            http://www.missworld.com/pages/The-Final-Score-Board/27.html

@ Yng Black Mind, while I agree with your comments re: Jana being the rightful winner of Miss Bda 2011 and an awesome ambassador for our country(my words not yours). Your suggestions about her not placing higher at Miss World due to lack of support/not being prepared or aware of all the Miss world events strike me as odd.
3 of the catagories were “optional” and all contestants had the choice of participating (or not) in them. If you look at the final scoreboard (see above link) on the Miss World website you will see that the majority of the contestants who made top 30 including the winner Miss Venezuela didn’t participate in all the catagories and still managed to do very well. It was their PRELIMINARY scores based on the judges initial impression of them (before the other catagories even took place) that helped them get into the top 30. Even if Miss Bermuda had done all the optional catagories (and they were optional) it’s unlikely she would cracked the top 50 based on her preliminary scores alone.
And as for “Shaking the head” comment I’m not even going to waste my time commenting on the negative aspects of your comment but just to clue you in “Beauty with a Purpose” is only one part of the Miss World competition and while it does yield high scores do you honestly think Bermuda, a highy developed country could compare/compete with the horrific issues that Ghana & Indonesia(they were the joint winners of that challenge event)have to deal with? They have real issues like parasitic diseases and hundreds of neglected, starving, children living in slums. What was Jana supposed to do her beauty with a purpose presentation on, the high cost of living in Bermuda? All in all she did pretty good out there beating out girls from bigger countries and who have more pageant experince.
Please do your research before coming on Bernews spouting nonsense, all the information is readily available online and takes 2 seconds to read. and BTW Miss Bermuda 2012 is going to Miss World you can find that information online too…….

            • Shaking the Head says:

@K.T.B. You really show your ignorance of what Miss World is all about these days. Take some time to research the requirements and disciplines. It is far more than a beauty parade. The Beauty with a Purpose is, as Young Black Mind said, a major part of the scoring. If Bermuda cannot come up with anything better than the “high cost of living”, then Bermuda should not take part. Not only does a contestant need beauty, but also talent and a very strong community involvemnet. Miss World looks for someone who has a charitable purpose and today’s Miss World requirements can in no way be compared to the 1979 era. Research the work the top 30 girls last year were able to present in their video. Miss Bermuda 2011 didn’t prepare the winner, and 2012 will be no different. What has been the preparation in 2012 compared to 2011 for Miss Bermuda? If as you say Miss Bermuda 2012 is going to Miss World, then expect nothing better than last year’s result, and no taxpayer money should be wasted.

@Amen..I guess you haven’t a clue about sarcasm..my comments about the current Miss Bermuda were directed at the Blooger…
I think she is beautiful with her dark skin and natural hair…

It is quite obvious that you misread my comments. They are without malice or negativity, just my opinion.

My comments were directed to Bda Luvin’ as it appears that he/she meant that the previous Miss Bermuda was an embarrasmment to send as a representative – maybe because of her skin colour and natural short hair.

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

The fact that you went to the skin colour is why you

      “Sounds racist to me!!”

LOL just thought I’d point it out as so many are in denial around here.

    • amen says:

You call that sarcasm? “my comments about the current Miss Bermuda were directed at the Blooger…” What?

    • amen says:

You call that sarcasm? “my comments about the current Miss Bermuda were directed at the Blooger…”….What?!

Without malice and negativity? Well I guess you need to go and read your comments again because they certainly were full of both. Or jealously. Whatever you want to call it.

YOU assumed that’s what they meant, they didn’t even say that. They even say good luck to this years contestants who all besides one pictured are brown or dark skinned so why are you assuming skin color is their issue? Beauty is the issue and beauty comes in all colors. A majority of people just felt that in 2011 someone lighter was more beautiful and would represent Bermuda better on the world stage.

  35. kayb says:

    go Deshona Gooooooo!!!!

  36. PawPaw says:

And by the way the contests are no longer solely based on physical beauty, it is a combination of beauty, brains and intellect.

For you to digress and hurl insults at me because of my opinion shows that you are lacking social skills and have some issues that you require attention!!

Everyone has a right to their opinions, that’s what free speech is about!!

    • amen says:

As I said before that’s bulls%!t. That extra crap is just to take away from the fact that beauty pageants are largely criticized for objectifying women.

When you stop attacking other people I’ll stop hurling insults at you. It’s okay for you to attack other people but no one can do the same to you? My only issue is that I can’t stand narcissistic people like you. I questioned your motives and your immense interest in this story so much so that you are making up reasons(racial issues) why most people felt Miss Bermuda 2011 didn’t deserve to win.

You keep saying everyone is entitled to their opinion. Make up your mind or is everyone only entitled to their opinion when it agrees with yours? So not only are you narcissistic but also a hypocrite. Jana that you?

As an Eastern Resident, I am ashamed to have Ms. Ingram representing us! She is invovled in activities that St. Georges, nor Bermuda would be proud of! Sadly Ms. St.Georges is here fighting right now… Smh Best of Luck to All the other Beautiful Ladies!!

    • Sad day in Bermuda says:

@St. Georges I can’t believe that u would come on here and try to disgrace a contestant like that. Shame on you

  38. PawPaw says:

@Amen…you should call yourself Horses*** instead of AMEN!

    • Bewildered says:

So what you’re saying is that this is really the Miss Black Bermuda Pageant? Now you will need to define “Black”, but then you have clearly indicate the complexion needed to win.

    • Seen it 1000xs times b4 says:

Rest assured , had Rachel won ‘everyone’ would be jumping up and down claiming her black hertitage .

  46. Why?! says:

It is SAD how some people would bring race into everything. People, remember we are all human. It’s whats inside that counts not your color. Stop this madness! Why is always a black and white thing?! To all the contestants, CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are all BEAUTIFUL. Hold your heads up high and be who you are.

GO MISS PEMBROKE!!!! Your a lovely young lady and you have alot going for you. I wish you all the best.
