Local Artist Designs HSBC Ocean Tote Bags
HSBC Bermuda concluded Climate Month with an “Oceans for the Future” initiative featuring reusable tote bags designed by local artist Carlos Santana.
A spokesperson said, “HSBC Bermuda marked the culmination of its internal Climate Month with a staff-wide and customer initiative centred on “Oceans for the Future.” Partnering with local artist Carlos Santana, HSBC Bermuda colleagues and branch customers received a reusable shopping tote bag with bespoke artwork created to celebrate oceans and amplify climate awareness.”
Tanya Bule, Head of International Wealth and Premier Banking, shows off the new tote bag designed by local artist Carlos Santana.
“Climate change can feel like a global challenge that’s happening somewhere else and being solved by other people—until you look at our oceans,” said Tanya Bule, Head of International Wealth and Premier Banking at HSBC Bermuda.
“For an island community, the sea is part of daily life, our economy and our identity. Climate Month was about connecting that reality to action, and giving people a simple, tangible reminder that small choices—like reusing a bag—add up.”
The spokesperson said, “The initiative also supported Bermuda’s creative community by commissioning a locally made design and using it to start conversations about practical sustainability practices. HSBC colleagues were encouraged to use the tote in daily life instead of using single-use plastic bags.”
“We wanted this to be more than an internal campaign — something colleagues and customers could use every day, whether they’re picking up lunch or running errands, and choose reusables over single-use,” Bule said.
“Last year, we equipped every staff member with reusable utensils packs to help cut down on single-use cutlery, and this tote bag builds on that momentum — now extending the impact to our customers as well. By partnering with local artist Carlos Santana, we’re celebrating Bermudian talent while reinforcing our shared responsibility to protect Bermuda’s marine environment for generations to come.”
Artist Carlos Santana created the artwork specifically for the “Oceans for the Future” theme, drawing attention to not only the importance of a healthy marine environment here in Bermuda but the interconnectedness of ecosystems and species globally. Mr Santana noted, “Protecting our marine ecosystem is vital for Bermuda but it matters globally too. I’m proud to partner with HSBC and see my artwork featured on the reusable tote bags for “Oceans for the Future” initiative.”
The spokesperson said, “HSBC Bermuda’s Climate Month brought colleagues together through learning and engagement activities focused on local climate concerns—especially the health of Bermuda’s oceans—and how individuals, businesses and communities can take meaningful steps towards a more sustainable future.
“Staff were invited to sign up for lunch-and-learns with the Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Programme; take part in mangrove restorations with the Bermuda Zoological Society; watch ocean-themed documentaries, including David Attenborough’s Ocean and the locally produced film Shark Country, through the grassroots campaign group OurOcean; and tour a visiting research vessel, among other engagement activities.
“HSBC Bermuda continues to support initiatives that strengthen communities and promote long-term resilience, including education and engagement around environmental sustainability.”
