Live Free Family Fun Day Today

July 7, 2012

The Live Free group will be hosting its first annual Family Fun Day today [July 7] at the Saltus Field starting at noon. The group consists of some of Jason Smith’s closest friends who since his death have rallied together to honor his memory, celebrate his life and ensure his legacy lives on.

The event will be filled with activities including a 7-a-side soccer final, face painting, fun relays, bouncing castle, games, crown & anchor, games and more. Refreshments will be on offer including hot dogs, cotton candy, snow cones and more. There will be a DJ playing music and they expect a visit from the gombeys.

A spokesperson for the Live Free group said, “The group came into existence after the murder of Jason Smith on May 1st 2011, in what the police believe to be a case of mistaken identity. He had no gang affiliations, but was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“We’ve also created a scholarship award at Saltus, which is presented to one student annually in June at Saltus’ graduation ceremony. It is our aim to organize and engage in community events to promote positive social environments and build community and family relationship; and to fulfill our long term goal of opening a multiservice facility that can allow us to meet individual and family needs in the community.

“Jason had a passion for football. He was the striker for the Pembroke Hamilton Club and spent a period of time representing and traveling with the National Squad. He was an avid team player both on and off the field.

“In remembrance of him, the Live Free Group held a 7-Aside Football Tournament on June 30th 2012 and the finals will be played this Saturday, July 7th 2012 at our Family Fun Day. The event will take place at Saltus Field.”
