45-Year-Old Dies After North Shore Collision

September 18, 2012

[Updated: Police confirm that a 45-year-old man has succumbed to his injuries] A male motorcyclist was taken to hospital this afternoon [Sept 18] after receiving serious injuries in a collision which appeared to involve both a car and a motorcycle.

The motorcycle ended up plunging through the railing, landing only inches away from a cross which had been previously been placed on the road side in memory of a road traffic victim from 2006.

As of 2.30pm, the North Shore road area by Terceira’s gas station was blocked with police tape with traffic being restricted in both directions. Details as to the extent of the motorcyclist’s injuries are not confirmed at this time, however they are believed to be extremely serious in nature. We will update with additional information as able.

Update 3.50pm: A police spokesperson has confirmed that the motorcyclist — 45-year-old St George’s man — was rushed to hospital, and subsequently died.

Update 4.25pm: Video of police statement below

Update 4.46pm: The full written police statement is below.

Around 2:20pm on Tuesday, September 18th police and first responders were dispatched to a reported serious collision on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the junction with Cable Hill. It appears that a motorcycle and a car were traveling along North Shore Road when they collided at the entrance of Terceira’s gas station.

The motorcycle rider, a 45 year old St. George’s man, was seriously injured as a result and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance where he later succumbed to his injuries. At this time, it does not appear that the occupants of the car were injured.

No further details regarding the deceased will be given until the next of kin has been notified. A full investigation into this fatal collision is underway and any witnesses are encouraged to contact PC Timothy Evelyn at the Roads Policing Unit on 295-0011.

This marks the eighth road fatality for 2012.

government needs to impose limits on bike speeds…they do for buses and vans in UK why can’t we set bikes, any model, to go no higher than 45kmph? same with cars as well

    • How do you know? says:

How do you know the bike was at fault? Trust me, the bikes aren’t the real problem, people in cars are. People on bikes are just more vulnerable than people in cars, hence more damage to the person. People in cars are sometimes the worst offenders. Popping out of gates with their nose in the middle of the road without looking, people cutting corners, people parking on a corner, people slamming on breaks for no reason at all. Some of these drivers in cars are crazy!

      • Yada Yada Yada says:

@How Do You Know My Condolences to the family of the victim. With out knowing the circumstances of the accident… 9 times out of 10 its the motorcycle rider at fault. Judging by the damage and the collision its self if you are taking your time on the bike you will have time to maneuver out of a dangerous situation and most likely want result in losing your life. Just think about it for a second..from what I see every morning while going to work I am not surprised..Do you know who the safest riders are? Its the youngsters who took project ride at TCD…Particularly the Berkeley School Students…

        • Take a break says:

This is coming from a car driver i bet, also a berkely alumni or proud parent. Take a break, yes the people in cars do get waaaaaaaay to selfish on the roads and then they try to drive a suzuki swift like its a Mack Truck.

All vehicle operators need to take a second thought into all of their movements and be cautious at all times. It is regularly said to all new riders to believe that everyone else on the road is an idiot. And with that, keep your spacing and watch all angles.
          My condolences to the family.

        • Vermicker says:

Let’s be clear the car pulled out in front of my uncle!!! Therefore, resulting in me burying my uncle!!! I ride bikes and drive a car and car drivers dont pay attention to motorcyclist unless they have ridden before!!! So please If u don’t know the situation don’t judge!!!

          Thanks for the
          Condolences

          • Colbi says:

You have my heart felt condolences. Uncle — was one of the most down to earth strong black role models We know. He will surely be missed.

          • How do you know? says:

Sorry for your loss. The ignorance of some people makes it hard for people like you in a time of morning and coping. My condolences.

          • jahma says:

FOREAL!!!! DONT TALK UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU TALKING ABOUT.PEOPLE LIKE U PISS ME OFF…CANT GET BACK BERMY RITE NAAH BUT OF COURSE MY FATHER WILL BE THERE TO BURY HIS NEPHEW.

        • WTF says:

I’ve been in one serious road accident on my bike. Car turned across the lane in front of me and did not see me, ended up on the windscreen. That’s a 100% car drivers at fault in my books!

    • John says:

There’s a bit of a difference between limiting a vehicle to 100kmph (62mph) like they do in the Uk and 45kmph…it would damage the car engine and limit their lifespan. Besides we mustn’t assume this man was at fault for speeding. Condolences to the family

    • Jay. H says:

Please don’t make this a government issue or who is at fault issue. A child has lost his father, family and friends have lost a loved one and the only thing I want my son to read is condolences and words of encouragement. He has been a trouper thus far and I would like him to continue on this path. Our son’s birthday is on Sunday and he has a pre GED exam TODAY, which he has decided he still wants to take. Your words may not have been said to be hurtful to his family and friends but you have clearly sparked a negative debate. Hopefully you understand.

    • Dinosaurmedia says:

I understand the hurt that family members feel for sure…but let us think about what Will has said…speed is the #1 culprit behind vehicular accident – bike, car, truck – whatever. this can not only be proofed by actuarial data but by the eyewitness testimony of millions of people worldwide who have been involved in such…my dad for evample was an EMT for years and he could tell you stories of accidents that took place on this island that would take days to tell.
I cannot say whether or not Will intended to blame the motorcyclist but he is touching on a very good poin.
If vehicle speeds were regulated accident rates would necdessarily plummet-
Look at how fast bikes, cars and trucks (busses especially) travel on our roads – as speed doubles impact force quadruples!Duh!
My point is through GPS enabled on every motorized vehicle to monitor only speed (and not exact whereabouts-allowing you creepy night crawlers to still do your “thing”- just kidding) a ticket could be sent in the mail everytime you go above an established speed threshold. It wouldn’t take long for people to wise up then…as money (the accumulation of such)seems to unfortunately, be the only motivator for many people on this island.
      Born here btw…

  9. we are blessed says:

When are people going to slow down and enjoy this Beautiful island. Better to get from point A to point B safe and or late than not at all smh

  10. Pissed says:

Why did it take so long for the ambulance to arrive at the scene very disappointed this man’s life could have maybe been saved

  11. Billy Mays says:

Based on the damage to the left side of the car, the location of the car shown in the photo and the location of the broken guardrail, it would appear that the driver of the car turned into the path of the motorcyclist. This doesn’t mean that the motorcyclist was speeding or wasn’t, but unless the car was moved subsequent to the collision, the driver of the car would appear to have been at least to some degree at fault.

  12. John says:

Maybe the ambulance was in dockyard or st George’s or stuck in traffic as people do not move outta there way… I have seen it. Fire service are EMT’S also???

    • Speak my mind says:

Yes they are but with limited equipment on board. The ambulance should be the first response, but that’s not hardly the case. However, with that being said, fire service can attempt to stabllize and update the status of
the client while the ambulance is on route.

  13. You See With Eyes Wide SHUT says:

Do you people see with eyes wide SHUT.

How can you sit you pompous selves there and say it must be the bike. Clearly the prescription on your glasses needs to be adjusted.

The bike was not at fault, a blind man can see that.

You can sit there and talk about laws when this man just lost his LIFE. No his life was snatched from him.

Do you really think this is the media outlet for this. Well someone needs to have something vexing to say. Some of you are probably going home right now to your loved ones.

Well…obviously you don’t care. Keep your underdeveloped opinions and challenged feelings off of this site.

Go do something else on your coffee break or wind down time after work. These simple minded comments are the things his wife could be reading.

Let’s hope that justice is brought down on the person who cut the VICTIM off. The person who cut the VICTIM’S LIFE short. Stop protecting the culprits. We need them not to get a smack on the wrist.

Like the woman who killed the innocent young school girl and the man that killed the gentlman who decided to be a good friend and drive home a neighbourhood pal.

The families have to suffer, make funeral arrangements and live in sorrow. No one is there for support when the flowers die.

    JUSTICE for the innocent.

    • Vermicker says:

Thank you so much for your comment!!! Dumb a$$ don’t realize that he has a family and we are suffering!!!!!

    • SMH says:

Thank you I agree. My codlences to the family and friends of the young man.

Ppl pls think before you judge and type.

    • Wait & See says:

I agree. What probably happened is that the car driver thought he/she could quickly nip in and beat the bike rider and misjudged his speed. I see people doing this all the time. Before the driver even knew it, the rider was probably upon him/her. They should have just exercised a little patience and not assume they could move faster than the bike. That’s the problem with Bermuda motorists-lack of patience.

My condolences to the family. I’ve been in their place and it’s terrible when one minute you see someone and they’re happy and healthy and the next they’re gone. At least when someone is sick you can prepare yourself but in these cases you don’t even get the chance to say good-bye…

BTW-To the person who described Berkeley students as being good riders, I agree. I work near the school and I always see the students riding very responsibly and maturely so that person did make a good point…the rest of the kids should take note

  14. Big j says:

My condolences to the family and friends. And to “S” stay strong . (not again)

  15. Big j says:

To those people with comments keep your opinions to yourself. There was a life lost.(bless)

  16. nicky 23 says:

Instead of worrying about who’s fault it was just change your comments into prayers for the family R.I.P

  17. J.A.H says:

As the mother of his teen age son left behind. We have enough to deal with if you can’t just give heartfelt condolences can you at least keep your judgemental thoughts to yourself. I have had to disconnect my internet while he was asleep to prevent him accessing bernews and reading comments. He had the site up the moment we returned from kemh. I respect everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I’m also asking you to respect my son and his family here and abroad at this delicate time and hold back your negative remarks. Thank You.

    • Jay. H says:

Also our son will be celebrating his birthday on Sunday so this whole situation is extremely hard. I can’t stop my son from accessing Internet outside of my home, so I plead with the public to give him a chance to grieve and only submit condolences or words of encouragement. Debating who was at fault is not going to give my son back his father.

      • Always Watching says:

My condolences to you and your family through this trying time.

  18. CHEEKUMS BI says:

My condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,i pray that the good memories of the deceased help you through your time of suffering.

  19. D. Evans says:

Condolences to the family. May he R.I.P.

  20. SMDH!!! says:

wow!!!! bermudians are really something else smdh!! how can you people be on here talking about whos fault it was. it doesnt matter whos fault it waw right now all that matters is that a life was lost here and a family is greiving. and at the same time even the other person in the accident is suffering as well due to the fact of what happened, how the hell would you feel if it was you or your family memeber on either side. this is crazy, bermudians are so quick to blame $hit on somebody, things happen and they will continue on happening regardless. so for all you negative a$$ people whos quick to blame keep ya comments to yourself for the time being and give the family time to at least deal with their lost. my deepest condolences to the family and i hope his son gets threw this as he has to deal with his birthday on sunday. God bless you all, stay strong (big hugs)
