Update 6.15pm: Shadow National Security Minister Jarion Richardson said, “The One Bermuda Alliance extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the motorcyclist who died following Sunday night’s collision on Middle Road in Sandys. We also wish the injured driver a full recovery and thank the police officers, paramedics, hospital staff and other first responders who attended the scene.

“This death marks Bermuda’s tenth road fatality of 2026. The circumstances remain under investigation, and it would be wrong to speculate about fault or suggest that any particular provision of the OBA’s road-safety Bill would necessarily have prevented this specific collision.

“We are reluctant to speak about public policy while a family is grieving. There is no comfortable way to do so, and respect for those affected requires care in both our words and our timing. But after ten road deaths this year, silence would be easier than responsibility. We must not speculate about this collision; neither can we ignore the wider pattern of preventable loss.

“Road deaths are not inevitable. We must continue to believe that fatalities and life-changing injuries can be prevented, because that belief gives us both the confidence and the responsibility to act.

“Individual drivers and riders must exercise care, but road safety cannot depend upon the perfect judgment of every person on every journey. Bermuda also faces systemic problems involving enforcement capacity, public transport, road infrastructure, outdated administrative systems and whether the consequences for dangerous conduct are sufficiently effective.

“The police investigation will be technically demanding and must be allowed to proceed without political speculation. We owe the Bermuda Police Service, and every agency involved the staffing, resources, technology and legal framework necessary to establish what happened, support those affected and provide the community with answers. Anyone who witnessed the collision or may have relevant footage should respond to the police appeal for assistance.

“Some may accuse the Opposition of making a tragedy political by again calling for action. This is not about exploiting one family’s loss. It is about recognizing that ten deaths represent a pattern that political leaders have a duty to confront. Silence would not be sensitivity; it would be another acceptance of the status quo.

“The OBA’s road-safety Bill is one part of the substantive response Bermuda requires. It would strengthen enforcement, consequences for dangerous road conduct and the treatment of repeat offenders, while providing safeguards around police powers. It must operate alongside proper investment in policing, public transport, safer infrastructure, modern ticketing, reliable data and an effective court system.

“After years of warnings, worsening statistics and repeated announcements, Government has not delivered the action Bermuda’s road crisis requires. Our community cannot continue to grieve one fatality at a time while treating the continuing loss of life as something beyond our power to change.

“Our hearts are with this family today. Our duty is to ensure that sympathy is followed by action.”
