All Public Schools To Be Closed On Friday

September 5, 2012

All public schools will be closed this Friday [Sept 7] due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Leslie.

A statement from the EMO said: “While public schools were scheduled to return on Friday, September 7, the Ministry of Education has decided to keep schools closed for the day.

“However, teachers and principals should report to their schools on Friday in order to prepare for the storm. A decision will be made on when schools will open following passage of the storm.”

You can read the full statement from the EMO here and all our coverage of the upcoming hurricane here.

That’s just a sad comment…and a very poor reflection on the attitudes of both students and parents towards their education.

Im jus wondering who is gonna watch my child while im at work…

    • Unbelievable & Sick N Tired!!!! says:

I’m wondering who is going to watch my children (I’m a teacher) while I’m at your child’s school preparing for the storm!!!!!

      • kaz says:

How is that different from the parents who have to work? Besides being my child’s school, it is your place of work. Who will look after my kids when I have to be at my work tomorrow?

  3. Triangle Drifter says:

And you wonder why the private schools produce results & the public schools do not. The weather tomorrow would not close private schools.

The culture learned in public school continues into the worklife, always looking for a way to have a day off.

    • Ryan says:

Triangle, this is an inane comment. Private schools will also be closed; I went to BHS (for the last to years of high school, anyway), and whenever the Ministry of Education issued a school closure, BHS—and most, if not all, private schools—would follow suit. This is the way it has worked for many years.

For once I agree with the Dept of Ed..

  5. Jai says:

Bermuda Government, DOE please there is no excuse why the school year did not or was not planned to start on or before the 4th September. You had enough time before, during and over the last year school year to plan educating our children.

Who’s bright idea was it to open and start on this Friday. Thank God we have (private) options.
We should start before September; teacher training and parents preparing for school earlier (supplies, uniforms, time off, etc).
The Bermuda Institute is an excellent example give them a call for their advice ASAP!
Let’s do this Bda our children need to be educated and prepared for the future….

    Hello again,

Please remove my name & email address from your website all together.

I am sick of the PLP and the Government daily issues not being addressed.

It’s just lazyness….. I don’t care to read or comment any more.
