Minister Perinchief: “Bermuda Has Been Blessed”

September 10, 2012

Speaking after the passing of Tropical Storm Leslie, Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief said “Bermuda has been blessed” and was “certainly spared the worst of Tropical Storm Leslie.”

Leslie had initially been forecast to come very close to Bermuda as a hurricane, however the weather system was downgraded to a tropical storm and passed 140 miles to our east.

Last week the forecast track for Leslie indicated it would come within 20 to 40 miles of the island as potentially a Category 2 hurricane with wind speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour.

Surf action on Thursday September 6th as Leslie was approaching Bermuda:

The island was warned Leslie could be a “historic storm” for Bermuda, with the potential of the island experiencing hurricane force winds for a sustained period of time, possibly up to two days.

However the island was spared the worst, with Leslie changing track and reducing in strength as it came closer to the island.

Last night [Sept 9] Minister Perinchief said: “Bermuda was certainly spared the worst of Tropical Storm Leslie. Despite a few power outages and cancelled flights it will be business as usual tomorrow.

“I would ask the public to remain cautious as there may be loose tree limbs and debris and the ocean is still dangerous for swimming. Let me also thank the members of the EMO, utility companies, local businesses and residents who all prepared for this storm.

“It is certainly better to be safe than sorry and with the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season tomorrow, September 10th, we will be well prepared if any other storms come our way,” said the Minister.

The Island is so screwed up even hurricanes don’t want to visit anymore. Not much left of the enviroment for them to destroy but the PLP is still trying.

  2. George says:

    Blessed? Blessed by who/what?

Has this expression not become a bit of a cliche? What does it really mean?

    • Family Man says:

I knew if I prayed to Jupiter and Thor they would spare us.

Of course it could have been Aeolus, but he’s all Greek to me.

    • say it like it is. says:

Oh it’s the Old Bermudians, they always say we’re blessed when a Hurricane or storm goes by with hardly any damage. Since it’s been about 1000 years can we think of another word, like “saved”, sacred, hallowed, set apart.

  3. Concerned says:

We ARE blessed in so many ways by Father God. It is just for us to take and make time to look around and witness His Mercy and Grace.

Now – what I did not understand during the blow/salt spray and be prepared for the worse is that no information was shared via CITV. As on the weekends, we do not have news on TV.

Please Mr. Perinchief, as majority of Bermuda has Cable and/or WOW can you please see that there is someone updating any and all information on CITV. or on our Weather Channel.

I’ll believe it when the proceeds of crime laws get applied to those who abuse elected office for personal gain…Then we’ll be blessed.

How come we never got any useless comments from this guy until after the fact?
