September 18, 2012

Two deserving Bermudians have been named recipients of PwC’s 2012 Peter Mitchell Scholarship awards. Michelle Kelly and Somer Zuiker have both been awarded the scholarship to help them further their educational goals.

A spokesperson said, “Michelle has just completed her third summer working as an intern at PwC and plans to return next year. Somer was a PwC High School Award winner. The scholarship, high school awards, and the intern programme are part of PwC’s HeadStart initiative, which provides career opportunities to young Bermudians interested in pursuing a career in business.”

Darren Johnston, Territory Senior Partner at PwC Bermuda comments on the 2012 scholars, “I am pleased to offer my congratulations to Somer and Michelle. They are both outstanding young Bermudians who show great potential and we are happy to give them the support they need to begin their professional careers.”

Michelle Kelly, a senior at the University of Notre Dame, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a double major in accounting and political science with a minor in international business. She will graduate in 2013 and plans to pursue a career in accounting. Before heading to university, Michelle attended Mount Saint Agnes Academy.

Somer Zuiker is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Queen’s University, where she is about to enter her sophomore year. Prior to attending Queen’ s, Somer attended Saltus Grammar School. She will graduate from Queen’s in 2015 and plans to work toward becoming a qualified financial analyst as well as a qualified accountant.

As well as excelling in academics, both young Bermudians have dedicated their time to helping the community – in Bermuda and at their respective universities.

Ms Kelly divides her time at university between volunteering as a student tutor and participating on the service committee for the National Political Science Honour Society, as well as volunteering at her local church in Bermuda.

Ms Zuiker has been actively involved as a member of the parish community at St. Patrick’s Church and volunteers with Commerce Kids, an organisation at her university where students volunteer in the classrooms and playgrounds of community schools to interact with children and serve as role models.

The spokesperson went on to say, “Both students were delighted to be recognised as PwC’s 2012 Peter Mitchell scholars, an award named in honour of one of the Bermuda firm’s former territory senior partners.

“The Scholarships are multi-year awards to talented Bermudian graduate and undergraduate students in their second, third or final year of university, who are studying towards a business degree.

“The scholarships are awarded to students who not only demonstrate academic strength and have awell-rounded school career, but also have strong character and leadership qualities.”

“I feel very fortunate to have been awarded this scholarship. This recognition provides me with more than just financial support for my education. The guidance and career support I receive from PwC will be valuable as I prepare for my future career,” Ms Kelly says.

“I am thrilled to be selected as a 2012 scholarship recipient, and I’m very appreciative of PwC supporting me as I work towards my degree. It is very important to me that I’m able to contribute to the cost of my education, and I am grateful that PwC will help me achieve that goal,” Ms Zuiker adds.

“PwC Bermuda is committed to developing talented and ambitious young Bermudians by supporting them with a range of work experience, mentoring and formal learning based on their skills and interests.

“I’m gratified that we can offer Somer and Michelle financial and coaching support as they complete their studies. We wish them great success and are confident that they will make a valuable contribution to Bermuda’s business sector.” says Mr. Johnston.

  1. Just Wondering says:

How does PWC determine who is Bermudian and who isn’t ?

  2. CFC_BLU says:

Why ask such a stupid question? Do they need to send you their birth certificates to authenticate that they are Bermudian? This is for “just wondering”

    • Just Wondering says:

No it is not a stupid question CFC_BLU. They don’t need to show me their birth certificates they are both being called Bermudian and one of them is Canadian – BUT there are plenty of deserving BERMUDIAN children.

  3. Tired Mum says:

@Just Wondering. It’s pretty straightforward. When I applied for scholarships, you had to submit a copy of your status certificate proving Bermudian status. Simple, but effective!
Congrats to both of these young women.

    • Bermuda First says:

Not all scholarship applications ask for a copy of status certificate proving Bermudian Status.

  4. Xeno Kills says:

Cute girls, congrats to both. Are we really questioning if they’re Bermudian?

  5. Bermuda First says:

One of those girls is not Bermudian. She is Canadian. Her parents have PRC. How did that happen?
