27-Yr-Old Charged: Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
In Magistrates Court this morning [Mar 5], a 27-year-old man faced three counts of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl between the ages of 14 and 16.
The three offences were alleged to have occurred over three periods of time between July 2012 and October 2012. Because the offences are indictable, the man was not required to enter a plea and will face trial in the Supreme Court.
Senior Magistrate Archie Warner granted the man bail of $10,000 and required a like surety. Bail conditions were that he was not to interfere with the complainant or any witnesses. At this stage, the man cannot legally be named.

This is the second alleged molester out on bail. If guilty, Let’s hope he doesn’t re-offend between now and his trial. Also hope if he is convicted, he gets a more appropriate sentence than the last one handed down by this magistrate

Being the sister of an accused man who was wrongfully identified as a sexual molestor by the 13 year-old daughter of his ex-girlfriend, I take these cases with a grain of salt. We were fortunate that his ex-girlfriend’s niece learned the truth and spoke up, otherwise we would have been in court. The reason why the 13 year-old devil lied was because my brother stopped giving giving her money and gifts due to falling grades and school disciplinary problems. I say this so that the people of Bermuda understand that there are two sides to a story and not all these “victims” are truthful. Innocent until proven guilty folks!!
I feel you and I understand exactly where you are coming from…Not every 14 year old is as naive as some may think…Some of these girls are “giving” themselves to these men in exchange for getting their nails and hair done, cellphones, clothes and money….This is where effective parenting comes into play…parents talk to your daughters…I organised a workshop a while back wherein I had some young men come in and talk to a group of girls. These men let the girls know that buying them an outfit or a sim card or paying for them to get their nails done is ‘chum change’..they also let them know that if they ‘stop’ giving it up there is always another to take their place….I have seen young ladies in this age group with a ‘pricelist’ of services that they offer….So while they may not be officially the age of consent in some cases they KNOW what they are doing….I am not saying that is the situation in this particular case but please be aware that this is happening…to the young men….resist temptation…Just because its offered to you does not mean that you have to take it…

You’re right! Make young ladies aware of their value and what they’re throwing away by selling themselves and for cheap. A man should be made to promise to provide for you for a lifetime, not a couple of gifts and cheap merchandise. And that promise should be witnessed by her family and the community so we can hold him accountable if he reneges.

Young Bermudian, I don’t want to judge without all of the facts. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think it was most improper for this man to give the girl “money and gifts.” Is it possible he was giving her money and gifts because he was getting something in exchange i.e. sex? This is just borrowing trouble if you ask me.
Lunch money, birthday, christmas gifts nothing extravagent, but enough to where it was becoming something that the youngster valued. The child’s father was not in her life and my brother was many enough to try to be a positive role model. In hindsight, I believe that the better path would probably be to give the mother the money for the child and have gifts that were not exclusive (mini golf, dinner for the family etc.)

Why is a man giving a girlfriend’s child money or gifts? If he is trying to support the mother than he should be giving her the money for her to lavish gifts from BOTH of them. It sets a bad example for a female child who now perceives money is traded for affection.
I would have a huge problem with any male friend of mine buying gifts for my daughter. And usually he will want a hug or some form of acknowledgement of gratitude.

I am a young Bermudian FEMALE.the fact that most “adult” Bermudians are still living in the stone ages. whilst most of your grandparents where married and having kids at 15! Yet they are seen as saints, and now its seen as statutory rape.
I wonder what the naive would have said if it was bought to court that a girl was having sex with a fellow 14 YEAR OLD BOY!!! (which she probably has already for her to be so comfortable) She figures out that boys their age cannot offer them anything valuable. we do in fact live in a society where appearance is VERY important.(if its not then tell TCD allow me to pass my car in whatever state its in. But thats another topic) so what do they do? they turn to their mothers and fathers to buy them sexy (and what society call “fashionable”) clothes, and a cellphone. i really want to see an island wide survey done to show exact numbers on how many of school children (even in primary school) are sexually active. Kids need to be educated at even younger ages on the dangers of sex. they arent afraid to explore the unknown.on top of that, PARENTS need to admit to being enablers and start PREVENTING. Personally, i believe the law needs to be changed to lower the age of “consent” to 12 years old. a 14 year old girl is MORE THAN CAPABLE of making a decision such as having sex. Especially when teens and pre-teens are entrusted with greater responsibilties like babysitting other kids. Which is harder?
