  2. M.P. MOUNTBATTEN JP says:

Bye could you imagine how the rate of those individuals mortgages will be affected , zero to sixty in ninety days ? Anyways , here goes OBA ,, eight more individuals unemployed . What a slap if they voted for change , because the PLP struggled to save jobs at the bank with a $200 million guarantee .

  3. Loquatz says:

    Ouch.

  4. Hmmmmm says:

Welcome to OBA land. Declare a profit one week and make folk redundant in the next. This one you CANNOT blame on the PLP folks. Wonder how many work permits they have in train and awaiting the good Senator’s signature.

    • David Cameron says:

80 days of government? I ABSOLUTELY blame the PLP. They messed this up.

      • haha says:

LOL how could you blame the PLP if they aint even in power no more.. Are you stupid or something??

        • Chris P Bacon says:

          HAHA you are clearly retarded

        • Come Correct says:

Are you? That’s the most ridiculous question I’ve heard in life. So I can shoot somebody and its the person giving CPR at fault for them dying from loss of blood? How the f@#k have people become so retarded? It is literally beyond explanation. I demand we do research into why people are becoming so f@#king stupid!

          • Here's the research says:

Hey a$$ you must be one of the eight. You got what you voted for now f@#kin deal with it retard.

            • Come Correct says:

I must be one of the eight based off of what? Nothing. Another stupid comment. I suppose by your comment you got what you voted for before the oba, we’re all dealing with that.

        • W says:

          I get it lol

You forgot someone else jumped into the car the same time you jumped out…

2013 is going to be a bad year regarldess who won the election, its going to take more the three months to fix the last 5 years of plp bad policies.

    • bull says:

relly a$$hole, how much work permits your beloved plp signed, look at that ang get be to please. you will be eating your words on it.

      • Sir George Somers says:

I think your reply is aimed at the wrong person, it should be aimed one above at Hmmmmmmmm

      • Tommy Chong says:

Yes plp gave out thousands of blue collar work permits but we will see if oba fixes this. It shouldn’t take a year to see work permits not being renewed. At least one work permit expires each month & thousands are not necessary so within half a year we should see many more Bermudians employed in these positions that these blue collar expats hold.

        I’m waiting OBA.

    • Y-Gurl says:

That’s the entire MO of these clowns “OBA land”..really they, screw up the country, opposition has to come in and fix the debt issues and dodge the rocks being thrown by the PLP supporters

    • is it ok says:

Well not off to a good start

  6. Darwin's Child says:

Bernews – any breakdown on whether these posts are held by Bermudians or guest workers? Thanks.

    • wow says:

I believe most if not all were Bermudian with families and mortgages. It was indeed a sad
      Day in the bank

    • David Cameron says:

It’s Nutterfield Bank…Bermooodians all de way. Let’s face it, this is a terrible bank caught in a timewarp.

      • Tommy Chong says:

Funny that someone who names themselves after an analogue politician in a digital age has accused a bank of being caught in a timewarp.

Beside I wonder what the real highly conservative David Cameron would say about the thousands of work permits approved if Bermuda was his homeland. Then again Cameron is a hypocrite whose is against the herbs while he allegedly did quite a bit of sniff sniff & puff puff before becoming a MP. So I guess hypocrites have hypocrite followers.

        • Let's move on please says:

Er Bermudians can take their pick in UK, not here pal. You lot don’t know how lucky you are, you’re all just lazy, that’s the problem. And needy, get a life and put some graft in….

          • Tommy Chong says:

@ Let’s move on please Your proctologist must be thrilled when you come in to their office. You can make comments about Bermudians being lazy while I’m sure you & the rest who comment like this have never & would never want to work a full day of hard labor in the elements of Bermuda. Bermudians pick up the trash, dig & pave the roads here not foreigners & there are only a certain nationality that is willing to do construction here & I’m sure you’re not part of it.

Sure Bermudians are allowed to work in UK along with the millions of others from the EC. So how can you state its such an easy thing for a Bermudian to do with so much competition. Besides not every Bermudian wants to work in the UK so should be given the right in the country that many of the unemployed’s decedents did not chose to come to but brought by force by the decedents of some of those who still reap the old money that was made off the blood, sweat & tears of those forced.

If you are in Bermuda you should give respect to those who’s ancestors toiled for this land. I know you wouldn’t dare call any Bermudian lazy to their face out of fear especially the darker skinned ones. Then again Bermudians are the ones who are supposed to be in fear of foreigners when really its the opposite.

By the way, I AM NOT YOUR PAL!!!!

            • Glory, Glory says:

Hey Tommy, whether you like it or not, every other nationality here thinks Bermudians are lazy. LMOP is right I’m afraid. I’m not sure where he mentioned skin color either.

              • Tommy Chong says:

WOW!!! You must be extremely popular to be privy to all the other nationalities on the islands opinions. NOOOT!!!!

Actually you & LMOP are put of an itsy bitsy army of a$$h0l3s on this island & you a the major in it. With both my longest fingers I salute you major a$$h0l3.

BTW since its a statistical fact that the majority of Bermudians here are of African descent there’s no need to mention colour to know who is the main race being targeted with your remark.

    • Bermudian Mom says:

Seven Bermudians and one spouse of a Bermudian – not a single work permit holder – BERNEWS – feel free to confirm. Of the eight – three had turned down the early retirement packages. Would like to know how many positions made redundant and how many early retirement packages offered in other jurisdictions. Interesting to note after announcing 2012 profit there was a blurb in the Sun on Friday about how staff has been reduced by 7% across the group yet today’s RG notes Bermuda’s reduction was 10%. It would also be interesting to see if the Bank will go on record as to why early retirement is only being offered in Bermuda – My understanding is that it is ILLEGAL in the other jurisdictions. To the powers that be – protect us from AGE DISCRIMATION!

Further to the comments regarding the GUARANTEE – the Bank pays the Government for the guarantee – so the only money passing hands is the fee paid to Government on whatever frequency agreed – monthly / quarterly/ whatever. So money into coffers not out.

  7. Wow says:

For you dump idiots, this is going to happen through out the year thanks to plp for putting us in a $h!t hole! Don’t worry OBA will put us on track!

    • haha says:

Ya right.. the PLP aint in power no more.. How could they layoff 8 people but just profit 200m.. that is BS. Thanks OBA. now you need to create 2008 jos.

      • Sir George Somers says:

Where and when did they profit 200 million??

      • sure. says:

actually make that 3008 jobs…smh…they promised 2,000 and the other 1000 is unaccounted for. go figure..

    • johnny says:

for all of you who are bashing political parties, you need to step back. Normally when a business suffers it is because of the decisions of management. How can a political party be responsible for a business suffering, they dont make decisions in the bank. The excutives do, and sometimes they make bad decisions. I dont see you fools giving PLP credit for all the successful business, like buzz which has more shops than McDonalds. You all need stop complaining about Bullsh!t and trying to spread you rhetoric, and get a life and do something good for your country. Some of you are still trying to be devicive, It seems like the OBA supporters are Mad that the PLP is not in government anymore. And dare let anyone point out the deficiences of the OBA, you will be attacked with the force of 100 lions, no matter how politely you point them out. Most OBA supporters seem to believe that because the PLP messed up, their politicians are entitled to mess up as well. This can be observed in many of their hateful comments, and normally are accompanied by “well the PLP did it” or “where were you all these years while the PLP were doing it”. If seems as though they do not believe they should be held accountable.

      • Tommy Chong says:

Why would any true Bermudian be “giving PLP credit for all the successful business, like buzz”? The owner of this place isn’t even Bermudian & even though its obvious he hires foreigners over Bermudians he still can feed people BS by saying he has 51% Bermudian workers when as you so compared his expansion to that of McDonalds. Should Bermudians be happy with a 1% over?

Before anyone starts with locals don’t want the buzz type jobs. Buzz has foreign drivers!!!! Drivers in Bermuda are one of the highest paid blue collar workers. Don’t even go on about experience Because TCD decides the experience of a driver not the employer if a Bermudian holds a license for a van they should have that job.

  8. Grubster says:

These redundancies would have happened whoever was voted on on 17 December

  9. Justsayin says:

All of you should stfu and stop wasting ya time commented on every little thing just shut up! Go smoke some weed go get drunk go do something cause all of you have no lifes

    • Sir George Somers says:

      Right back at you

    • Come Correct says:

Great idea! Wait…there no f@#kin weed cuz I voted for change… No drought in 2007 so I guess if the oba dont get on that ASAP I’m voting for green next time around…. Naysayers= all you care about is weed, not the betterment of the country…. No my friends, balance, everything must have balance. Legalize and tax weed and we might just balance instead of the continuous deficit…but I know nothing, carry on.

      • sonoso says:

your statement re the drought is actually in correct and nothing to do with the OBA. it has all to do with that nice spanky new container X-ray scanner implemented under your illustrious PLP government last year. that is what is stoping all the erb from getting in..

        • Come Correct says:

It has everything to do with the oba, they’re in power, it was the plp before them. Oba: we need to raise the debt ceiling until we find different revenue streams… Term limits axed in less than 2 months but marijuana is hardly being considered. Its not the x-ray machine stopping the weed its the failing legislation otherwise the weed would come on through, it would just be taxed if politicians had an ounce of intelligence.

          • Tommy Chong says:

The OBA can not legalize especially since plp signed a bunch of agreements with the American feds.

They could although decriminalize & then tolerate the use under certain conditions. Then this would not go against fed agreements. Either way it will still have to be grown on island so the feds can not accuse Bermuda of supporting trafficking. Unless of course it was legalized for medical purposes then we might be able to have an excuse to import some from the west coast. If this happened I may start to develop an acute case of glaucoma.

            • Come Correct says:

Haven’t heard about theses specific agreements, can they be viewed somewhere?

              • Tommy Chong says:

Its the proceeds of crime which you probably knew about but did not take into consideration what it entails. Bermuda has agreed to disclose funds gained on island through any illegal activity to the feds. Even if Bermuda legalized as I mentioned in the previous post we would not be able to import since u.s. federal law deems this illegal use of their borders. If we had cannabis cafés here the feds would want detail information on how they got their goods & if it was found that it came through u.s. borders that café’s funds would be confiscated & they could face prosecution in the u.s. & Bermuda would not be able to help them.

Even if we did legalize & use what was grown here & not import we would still face problems from the feds. Canada which unlike us is self sufficient still felt the pain when Ontario legalized for a few months. The feds put an embargo on the whole of Canada for this move by Ontario. This embargo managed to outrage enough business owners who profited from American imports that the law was sone changed back. Just imagine what would happen to Bermuda in that situation? As for decriminalization this would work better but it still would not allow imports unless from Canada & we may be forced just as Netherlands has to make places for purchasing locals only.

        • Tommy Chong says:

The x-ray scanner isn’t working. Where have you seen a article about someone being busted because of the x-ray scanner. Its not the oba fault either its the fault of someone don’t know who but someone is obviously taking sides for certain wanksters & helping them control the market. There is stuff on island but only the certain wanksters have it & they are trying to sell small amounts for astronomical prices. There has also been stories of others who have been robbed at gunpoint for their herb in their own home by wanksters. They can’t go to the bps about this or they will be arrested or subject to investigation.

          • Bermudian Mom says:

The bust in Hamilton Parish – Limestone Lane? The x-ray scanner got that. I know someone how works on the Docks.

            • Tommy Chong says:

When was this? I don’t recall someone busted down that way for importation through the docks. As far as I can remember no one since the x-ray scanner was put in has been busted for that. I’m not saying you’re wrong but I was just wondering if I could get a link of reference.

            • ABM says:

The machine does work, however, it is not in use because there is no one on the island who can operate it. Supposedly a few people are takin some specia lcourse in order to learn how to operate it. Info from the horses mouth actually!

The reality is that neither party is to blame. The market is simply correcting itself. We must get over the idea that money or even large profits foster jobs. What we must look at when giving an analysis of the economic fallout as well as the ideas for growth is ” Need “. Need is what fosters jobs and business growth. Business can no longer afford to do with 100 on staff what they can do with 50. This contraction the the market will continue im afraid. In a small micro state that lacks natural resources, manufacturing or raw material industry and a small population we must become much more aware of the role we play.

    • Jus' Askin' says:

I agree with what You wrote.
      What ‘role’ do we play?
Is there anything we can possibly do as “a small micro state that lacks natural resources, manufacturing or raw material industry and a small population”?
I am a slave to hope that there is ;-)

      • MCT says:

Growth and Discovery is the only way forward. Trying to re create the 90′s boom will only doom Bermuda even further. Expansion into new markets and letting go of any pre conceived notions of what Bermuda is must be let go. ” adapt or die ” is a very simple phrase but one that is apt in our situation.
” Change” however is a loaded word and scares many of us.
My fear is that while we stand afraid of this change we may very well be crushed by it.

There are 2 safe places when swimming in the ocean . Out deep beyond the breakers ( investment, risk taking , innovation ) or on dry land (fiscal responsibility, controlled market contraction).
Bermuda right are hovering in the middle where the waves break.
With No desire to stay on dry land where its less dynamic and exciting but scared to go deep in the water and really swim for fear of sharks.

but any lifeguard will tell you the middle between dry land and beyond the breakers is where people drown.

the fault lies completely with the plp.

  18. Marc G Daniels says:

IMHO: The PLP was not responsible for Butterfield Bank falling into financial difficulty, which required the assistance of a guarantee from the then government. Nor was the PLP was responsible for Butterfield Bank’s current profits as reported last week.

We need to be more measured in our dialogue on issues such as these. Although some will argue that the PLP mismanaged the public purse, I would suggest that such argument is nothing more than biased opinion. Much like I would suggest that we should not criticize the OBA for these redundancies.

In today’s market, businesses are seeking every cost cutting measure imaginable including outsourcing to other jurisdictions; after all, in this information age, human capital is simply not required like in the days of old.

However, this will become political if new personnel are brought in from overseas as subsequent replacements (due to our robust or not so robust work permit regime). Only time will tell.

But in the interim, let’s not make this political when it is not necessary. Our focus should be on trying to help these eight Bermudians secure new work and hold the Immigration Ministry accountable if positions are taken by guest workers where these individuals would otherwise qualify.

    • Sir George Somers says:

I agree, the problems at bntb have nothing to do with the PLP or OBA, lets not politicise every problem. If some OBA supporters are blaming the problems of the bank on the previous govt then they have no idea what actually happened at the bank and its link to the global recession.

      • Sandgrownan says:

Well. The collapse of the real estate market which has affected all the banks is entirely the fault of the PLP and there idiotic meddling in things they do not understand.

        • Tommy Chong says:

Why? Because the plp told the landlords to keep inflating the amounts they sold or rented their property for in the midst of a recession?

          • Sandgrownan says:

No. The PLP flooded the market with condos built at our expense, while simoultaneously killnig demand by restricting what could be sold to non Bermudians, and preventing Bermudians who committed the heinous crime of marrying non Bermudians from buying more than one property.

Throw in decliningrental values due to ex-pats leaving in droves and the bottom fell out of hte market.

            • correction says:

First of all not all the condos were built by the PLP government. Secondly, tons of Bermudians wanted to make a lot of money quick by building condos and selling them. Condos took up a small foot print and provided lots of housing for the influx of expats and was proclaimed to be a solution for the housing crisis at the time. Our population was bigger and rent skyrocketed, something had to be done. They should have built the apartment buildings in the city of Hamilton instead. If the housing crisis was dealt with properly and International Business was dealt with properly we would not be in the position we are in now.

              • M.P. MOUNTBATTEN JP says:

But NOBODY talks about the private dept of the average Bermudian . Those who threw away perfectly good appliances for stainless steel . All brought in from abroad personally . Buy Bermuda didn’t matter . $5 billion worth of homes we can’t afford to live in . SMH , but the PLP made them take it on ! Everybody picked up a shovel and dug , and dug and dug some more . Now they love the former UBP because they think they( the former UBP ) will ease their personal financial pain . Most don’t really give a hoot about the public dept , only about how they can not only survive , but prosper again like they did under the PLP .

        • Tommy Chong says:

Or maybe! PLP told all these landlords to keep building more & more even though they still had empty places. I know plp did also support the building of places they shouldn’t have but the old saying, “If someone jumps off a cliff will you follow?” comes to mind. PLP can be blamed for some things but not all since others need to take responsibilities for their decisions.

    • Portia says:

      Marc,

“Although some will argue that the PLP mismanaged the public purse, I would suggest that such argument is nothing more than biased opinion.”

No, that’s just a matter of economic fact. Looking at their financial record would tell anyone that.

    • Bermudian says:

You’ll never openly admit it, but the PLP screwed up for many years and now we all have to suffer. It is going to take many years before we recover and hopefully the PLP will NEVER be put in power again. The OBA have lots to do and unfortunately we all want it fixed NOW, but in reality that can’t happen. “Lets not make it political”, please boy get a grip with yourself!

    • Kevin Comeau says:

      @ Marc Daniels,

On a personal note, I enjoy reading and hearing your intelligent comments and looks forward to hearing more. You are a shining light in the new PLP.

While I agree with your comment that the PLP had nothing to do with Butterfield Bank’s financial difficulties (that was entirely mismanagement by bank officials) and I also agree that the OBA has nothing to do with the present bank redundancies, I completely disagree with your statement that the PLP did not mismanage the public purse.

Numerous PLP Government contracts were not put out for public tender, which violated the Financial Instructions laws that safeguard against government abuse and corruption. Further, many of these and other contracts had cost overruns that exceeded more than 100% of the original cost estimates and the cost overruns collectively exceeded $150 million.

Further, anti-IB policies such as term limits and massive increases to the payroll tax caused IB companies and some local companies to transfer jobs, whole departments and even entire company operations to other jurisdictions, which resulted in the loss of hundreds of Bermudian IB jobs and thousands of local jobs from companies that depended on IB (such as law firms, accounting firms, computer companies, restaurants, landlords) which threw Bermuda into an economic depression.

It is important to keep these facts straight. Bermuda is in a big mess because of massive PLP mismanagement and possibly illegal acts. (We will only know if illegality was also involved after the Auditor General is given the power of subpoena to properly “Follow the Money” to see if there were illegal kickbacks to Cabinet Ministers who granted these highly suspicious Government contracts.)

If you re-write history (as you appear to be doing) you inhibit the public’s ability to fully understand what got Bermuda into this mess, which makes it more difficult to get out of this mess.

Let’s hope, for the sake of the country, that a man of your intelligence seeks only truth and does not fall into the trap of misleading the masses for the sake of his political party.

      I wish you well.

Instead of Outsourcing our business why not have
Bermuda as an Insourcing Hub, we are only two hours off of the Eastern seaboard. Since Bermuda has no Natural Resources except her Human resources, why not utilize
    Them!

    • Tommy Chong says:

Because the price of living is too high in Bermuda for locals who have no choice but invest their lives to the island. In order to insource employers will have to decrease the average wage which already is happening through some employers bringing cheap labor in. Since the tax increases here there will be more job layoffs & increased unemployment. Wonder who’s bright idea it was to increase taxes in order to get Bermuda back on track?

No worries, the prediction is that with the tax increases Bermuda will be back on track within a decade. So we will have about 8 years of unemployment, hungry students, increase in robberies & since the bps has herded all the drug trade to the wanksters we’ll slowly start to become a wankster controlled nation just like some of the countries in Africa & the Middle East.

  26. Back to Basics says:

Again – employees lose jobs because of bad decisions made by senior management. Remind me, now that Butterfield has cut north of 100 jobs, how many of these positions were held by highly paid executives? Workers really need to understand the world of business, execs win in good times and bad. The bank is well on the road to recovery therefore the only reason for these cuts is to get the bank ready for sale, period. So much for 60/40.

  27. Back to Basics says:

Oops – should be “so much for relaxation of 60/40″

  28. Naive Observer says:

This is a continuation of the policy of both banks to continue to cut costs. They will try to put in automation for as many tasks as possible, and perform what cannot be automated as cheaply as possible. That means outsourcing or moving tasks with the company to where they can be done cheaper (not in Bermuda generally)

This will continue regardless of the party in power. The fact they declared a profit does not mean they will keep doing things less efficiently than they could. In a publicly held company there is never too much profit, only too little. This is demanded by the shareholders.

Technology improvements have made it possible to find these savings, and this will continue. That is the reality everywhere.

This is why it is crucial that Bermuda attract new business, to create new jobs to offset this trend.

    • Tommy Chong says:

This is true but the other big bank in Bermuda has outsourced & also brought many foreigners in to hold positions using Bermudian faces on the front lines as a guise. This is another trend thats ruining Bermudians chances of employment & it doesn’t end with this bank but in many other work sectors. Even if Bermuda gets back on track by that time there will be a full ghettoization of many areas in Bermuda because of this trend. The IB workers will not want to work in an island that has third world sectors especially an island as small as this one.

Butterfield even though having to let go many positions has been able to successfully hire a majority local workforce & train them to move up the ranks. This proves that there are Bermudians out there that can be successfully employed & trained to succeed if given the chance. I emphasize the IF.

      • Glory, Glory says:

Wow, 50% of the posts here are you. There’s a big world out there….you can talk, go to bars, travel ….seriously….

        • Tommy Chong says:

Who taught you math dufus? 16 post out of over 100 is no where close to 50%

Just because my post are true theres no need to get you panties in a bunch that is unles they are about you & your mates. OOOP!!!! I think I’ve hit the nail on the head. Oh well! Who the cap fits!

  29. QBall says:

They made them redundant in prep to hire 8 Canadians who can live in Bermuda as long as they like, makes loads of money and buy our (now devalued) houses with only an 8% penalty, rent them back to our people and send the money back to Canada.

    Yes this is definitely change!!

    • Tommy Chong says:

If this is true then it is illegal. The employment act states that if a position is made redundant than the position is considered no longer needed & no one can be hired for it again. Bermudians who are made redundant should take note of this & report it to minister Fayh & make sure he does his job to uphold the laws he was elected to uphold.

      • Say no says:

        Mr. Chong,

Please get your head out of the sand. This practice has been going on for umpteen years. The call the position by a different name and hire cheaper labour. This is why a lot of people do not even respond to job ads. Because a lot of them are work permit renewals and they change the job qualification to suit the ex-pat knowing full well a Bermudian will think themselves under-qualified.

        • Tommy Chong says:

I do know about the position name change trick I just would not think it would happen as frequently as you suggest. Even though this would make sense with all the hype when the pot washer fiasco came up of people insisting they are called by kitchen porters or something like that. This is a disgustingly underhanded practice & I would hope Butterfield is not planning to do this or just as I closed all my accounts at Bank Of Bermuda when they turned HSBC & moved my money there to BNTB & Capital G I will move it all to Capital G & tell BNTB to go for a long walk off a short pier. I can’t fathom how immigration would be so ignorant to the name change & believe that some position pulled out of thin air has so many requirements. Are the people working at immigration such ignoramuses that someone waiting tables doesn’t need 5 years experience to do so or that someone who is brought from another country has more experienced driving around Bermuda than a Bermudian.

      • Loquatz says:

They say these positions have been cut due to diminished business.
If business expands, there’s a chance that they would be refilled locally. However there is also a chance they would be outsourced oustide of Bermuda – after all in effect NTB is now a minor appendage of CIBC and Carlyle.

        • Tommy Chong says:

There not much that can be done about outsourcing & I realize that but laying off someone just to hire someone else to work on island is illegal wether it be a permit holder or Bermudian. If the job is to be outsourced IMO thats more fair than giving the position to someone locally & makes more sense since outsourcing would be cheaper on the whole. Outsourcing sucks but its not the big problem with unemployment on island the big problem is jobs given to permit holders when there are Bermudians capable of doing them. NTB are very good at hiring Bermudians first so I don’t think they would really do what QBall is accusing them of at least hopefully they wouldn’t.

    • Orbit says:

Haha you like making up stuff don’t you. Should be called Screwball instead.

  30. Outside looking In says:

With comments like this on job advertisements online overseas –
**EARLY RESPONSE required as my client is looking to conduct interviews within the week even for someone looking to start when their current contract expires later this year**

*** We also have Audit opportunities in the Investments sector with this firm ***

MEET THE CLIENT – IN LONDON

In addition, our client is coming to London in March and is keen to meet face to face with candidates interested in relocating to Bermuda. This is a unique opportunity to get yourself in front of key decision makers and secure yourself that dream job overseas!

So how is the new ‘Time Limit’ helping BERMUDIANS get jobs with comments like this for positions to Ex-Pats. ABSOLUTELY WRONG WITH SO MANY BERMUDIANS STILL BEING MADE REDUNDANT AND THIS FORM OF ADVERTISING IS ALLOWED IN ORDER TO GET MORE FOREIGN PEOPLE TO TAKE THESE JOBS!!!
What is the Immigration going to do to monitor this type of behaviour, while Bermudians still struggle to find employment.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Our premier has already stated that he expects the applicant to monitor this behavior themselves. Not that our former government did a better job since their solution was a hotline & online form that immigration never responded to when used. We cannot dwell on the former government as they are out but this government putting the burden of the job that immigration is well paid to do on the applicant seems like a scape goat. There are many trying to find a full time job while hustling from one part time to another to make ends meet. Where does someone doing part times day & night find time to keep track of all the places they put a resume in for to make sure that the employer actually follows up with an interview. Bermudians already get generalized for being on the phone while working (even though some expats do it too) so how are they to call around asking, “did you get my resume can I have an interview?” to a bunch of different places.

I voted for a change so how about this OBA. GET IMMIGRATION TO DO THEIR JOB FOR A CHANGE!!! If they don’t fire them & find another local who really does care about their nationals.

  31. Keepin' it Real...4Real! says:

you all are like a dog chasing its own tail…totally useless…a big bomb is gonna drop very soon and 9/10ths of you will be taken by surprise because you are all so self indulged in meaning less jargon…WAKE UP and open your eyes. NWO in effect.

  32. Vulpes says:

I note with interest Marc Daniel’s very good post above, and I am assuming he is indeed the one and same PLP Sen Marc Daniels – it would be helpful to confirm if this is the case.

In the meantime (and I am an OBA member and voter), it would be an absolute disgrace and outrage if any of these jobs were not genuine redundancies but in fact a cynical exercise to get cheaper and perhaps more productive labour elsewhere – but I doubt it, except if this is a case of outsourcing and there is not much anybody can do about that.

  33. BTW says:

    One question –

Have you ever run a business? Been responsible for a payroll on a Friday other than your own? Needed to chase receivables in order to eat?

These posts are an embarrassment to this country. Thankfully the handful of people that comment are not representative of the rest.
I come across a lot of happy optimistic people every day, thank god for that, because without optimism and positive thinking we will remain in the mess we have given ourselves.
