April 18, 2013

Walker Campbell DriverBermuda’s Walker Campbell claimed the Boys 14 & Under title as the International Junior Golf Tour [IJGT] returned to the Oyster Reef Golf Club in South Carolina earlier this month for the IJGT Classic.

Elite junior golfers representing over a dozen nations including Canada, Uruguay, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, Sweden, Kazakhstan, and the United States competed for IJGT Merit Points in the two-day, 36-hole Event. The Rees Jones designed course challenged the field with narrow fairways and quick greens.

After two days of consistent play, Campbell was tied for the lead with Kevin Ying of Shanghai, China, after a first-round 8-over-par 80. Campbell was hungry for a win and came out strong with a 3-over-par 39 on the front nine during the final round.

He carded a single birdie for the day on No. 7. Campbell struggled a bit on the back nine, but carded a second 8-over-par 80 to for a tournament total of 160. His consistency was just enough to edge out the competition.

This was a breakthrough victory for Campbell after competing in several tournaments during the 2013-2013 season. “It feels great to get my first IJGT victory,” Campbell said.

Also in the field was Bermuda’s Mitchell Campbell who finished 11th in the Boys 15 – 19 Age Group Division.
