Runner Proposes To Girlfriend At Finish Line
[Updated] One of the runners in today’s [May 24] Bermuda Day Half-Marathon Derby proposed to his girlfriend at end of the 13-mile race, dropping to his knees when he crossed the finish line and asking his stunned girlfriend to marry him.
The woman was cheering on her boyfriend — Thomas Smith — as he entered Bernard Park and completed the Somerset-to-Hamilton race.
Although he had just run 13 miles, he wasn’t too tired to pop the question, bending down on one knee and sliding a ring — that he carried from Somerset — onto Elizabeth Simmons’ finger.
The finish line marriage proposal brought cheers from onlookers as Ms Simmons said “yes” and hugged her new fiance.
Update: Speaking with Mr Thomas after the day, he said the idea for the proposal came to him a few weeks prior to the race when he was out training one day. Mr Thomas also said the date has a special significance as May 24 is his father’s birthday, and his father passed away last year. The couple have been friends for two years, have been dating for just over a year, and are both looking forward to their new life together.
YESSS Thomas!!! Congrats!!

Why didn’t my husband think of something romantic like that? He didn’t even get down on one knee!
Congrats to the happy couple…I’m glad he didn’t lose the ring while in the race!
Here comes Debbie Downer
@Dark Side: You’re so stale it’s not funny. What do YOU have to say? You haven’t even said congratulations to the happy couple so who’s the downer? All you do is insult people who have told you off before…get a life and GROW UP…or at least think of something original to say for once!
Debbie Downer? Who talks like that? This isn’t 1956!
Congrats cuzzy…very romantic indeed. What a jouyous day to choose on uncle Buffs birthday. Idk Liz as yet but im sure she is a lovely lady. I’m happy for both of yo u.
Happy for you both Cousin… congrats!!! @ Mayan… your turn has gone and whatever your husband did, you said yes, so just be happy for them.
@Miriam, et. al: This confirms what I have always suspected…that some slow Bermudians just don’t comprehend self-deprecating humour-i.e. making jokes at your own expense (making fun of yourself). That’s what my comment was-plus it was a compliment to this guy for his creativity so I don’t know why you weirdos are turning it into something negative.
Nowhere did I say anything negative and I DID congratulate the couple. The overly zealous religious weirdos posting on here clearly don’t comprehend properly but I shouldn’t expect any better…these are the same freakazoids who think God literally made the earth in seven days and that Noah literally built an ark and put the animals in it two-by-two.
You better need to get out of church and grow a sense of humour-it was a joke, geesh!
Miriam, why do people like you always try and pick a fight? Maya didn’t give some long story about what happened to her so why say her turn has come and gone? Why be rude? It’s so unnecessary. Maya did say congrats; what more do you want?
Some people just like to be rude and nasty for no reason.
@Miriam: Aren’t you that nutter who goes around telling people in Hamilton that Jesus is coming? Strange.
@Miriam, I don’t think Mayan was trying to be a downer. I think her point was that it was very romantic and too bad there aren’t too many romantic men left out there. She DID say congrats, so I would imagine she was happy for them. I personally don’t think public proposals are cute-my hubby proposed in front of a crowd too, and I would have preferred it was done privately with just the two of us. However, to each their own and I wish all the best to the happy couple!!!
@Look Who is Talking: haven’t you heard-some bermudians just LOVE attention. Plus there are religious zealots on here who think EVERYTHING is romantic because they feed off of other people’s romance because their own lives are BORING-just church, church, church.
I’ll bet Miriam doesn’t have much of a life-that’s why she’s going bananas over something that didn’t even happen to her!!!
Thanks every body for the love and well wishes….I (WE) honestly did not anticipate all this but sincerly thankful nonetheless. Let Love Reign over our Beautiful Bermuda!! Thanks BERNEWS!!
congrats tommy!!!!!!! best wishes to you and your new fionce’
Welcome to the family Liz!!!
