Photos/Video: Pastors Launch “Bermuda Prays”

May 3, 2013

[Updated with photos] Pastors from St. Georges to Somerset are uniting around an initiative called “Bermuda Prays” and have planned various events this month to call the nation to seek God as the answer to our national problems.

Bermuda Prays, City Hall Hamilton May 3 2013-2

A statement from the group said, “As our nation faces some dire issues – economic and social [i.e. gang violence, decline in traditional family and community values, etc.], clergy believe that our national woes can be attributed to a spiritual waning across our island. Hence, the undertaking is to unite the whole country through prayer.

“Pastors are under conviction both to be accountable to the nation and to be accountable before God to repent for our corporate lack of action and leadership. Repent to God and to the nation for not being the agent of transformation that the Church of Jesus Christ is called to be.

“We are under conviction to fall upon our knees, but also to get up off of our knee and reach out’Heart to Heart’ to our communities in meaningful service [as a number of churches are already doing].

Various activities will culminate with a National Gathering for Prayer to Awaken the Nation on Thursday, May 16th for one hour from 2.00 -3.00pm at City Hall.

“The intent is invite all of Bermuda, all religions, all of government, commerce, international businesses, schools, media, and all citizens—to pause for an hour of that day, and in whatever manner they choose, to acknowledge the Ultimate Source as an answer for the nation,” said a statement.

“We also invite everyone to stop at 3:00 for a minute of silence to take part in this important initiative and acknowledge the shift that is needed in our island home as we recognize God and the need to come together Heart to Heart.”

Other events leading up to the National Gathering for Prayer are a Solemn Assembly [Sunday, May 5th] and A Week of Open Doors [May 6th-11th].

The upcoming Solemn Assembly seeks to Awaken the churches and connect the churches Heart to Heart. This event is scheduled for this coming Sunday [May 5] at 7:00pm at the Anglican Cathedral for adults, and at 5:00pm at the Anglican Cathedral Hall for preteens and teens.

Next week churches across the island will participate in a Week of Open Doors—to Awaken the communities across Bermuda. The objective is to connect the community Heart to Heart, and increase the awareness of prayer, and invite any and all who would like to pray or be prayed for, to come out to a church near them.

A special focus of Bermuda Prays is being placed on reaching the younger generation. The Youth Impact Task Force has called for pre-teens and teens to have their own Solemn Assembly on May 16th, 5:00pm – 6:00pm at the National Cathedral.

to call the nation to seek God as the answer to our national problems.

    that had me pml.

  2. Family Man says:

Oh well, thank Christ our problems are solved.

And if that doesn’t work there will be a sacrificial chicken slaughter next Friday.

  3. Sandgrownan says:

So when it doesn’t work, can we finally ignore the churches..please?

  4. pickle juice says:

yeah….god is not real…hes just something for people to believe in to help them get through the day. Going to need a little bit more than a prayer to fix this situation.

    • Tommy Chong says:

If God is not real than all a human is, is just another animal & what the wanksters do is just as all animals do to survive. In the animal world this is natural selection & just as animals sometimes use weapons & brute force to become the alpha so are the wanksters.

Now on the other hand if humans were just another animal we wouldn’t be building flying machines & creating cures for diseases as even the most clever animals can’t do this. We have been given special abilities that none of darwin’s theories can ever explain. This is why we know a spiritual morality that no other animal can relate to. The problem is that religious laws have clouded the truth for the humans who gain from the religions they create. There is more to humanity than flesh, blood & bones & if I was to believe our abilities over other animals was just due to evolution I would be dumb, def, blind & a monkeys nephew.

      • Family Man says:

Say hello to your Uncle Bonobo. He’s been wondering where you were.

        • Tommy Chong says:

Thanks for suggesting that I’m related to the lover not the fighter species of the the chimps. Since you probably also believe you’re related to some species of chimpanzees as well I won’t take it as an insult but a compliment based around ignorance.

Funny how some will base their beliefs around science when science still cannot explain how all other species evolved leaving no living ancestor except the chimp & human. No sabertooth, no mammoth, no megalodon, no anchiornis & the list goes on but somehow they believe the ancestors of man stuck around. Even more inconceivably they believe that in such a short period of time chimps evolved so much that their predecessors were able to create world wonders & universal discoveries.

The offering pots will be overflowing this Sunday!!

  6. Bobby says:

Most people would agree that those amongst us who have imaginary friends we talk to and hear talking to us should be locked away at MAWI. Yet these people walk free amongst us and we act as if all is ok. What’s the difference between ‘god’ any my imaginary aceboy Leroy?

    • Tommy Chong says:

I’ve seen people who appeared to be talking to themselves then I realized they had a communication device in their ear that I could not see at first. Just because you can’t see who the person is communicating with it doesn’t mean they don’t exist & the person is crazy. As technology gets smaller & smaller it should bring on the realization that something can be so small but so great that it gives the ability to communicate with someone miles & miles away. The problem is that as technology gets more advanced human’s ego gets bigger & we feel theres nothing beyond our star that is more advanced than what can be explained. The human spirit is the ultimate communication device & even though it can’t be seen doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

As for your most people would agree theory it’s wrong since the believers still outnumber the nonbelievers. For now that is until the human ego becomes to big for itself & destroys what’s left of humanity.

      • Judge Dredd says:

Well done Tommy Chong! The way these misguided souls search for The Creator is like searching for their mothers with a metal detector. I suppose they don’t believe in; the future, ideas, love, spirit, and ultimately the SOUL since we can’t see or measure any of those either. They are the type that would ridicule a mother and father who speak to their unborn baby waiting in anticipation of her joyous arrival. Or one who speaks to their departed beloved knowing that they will join them one day. They don’t believe in G-d, they don’t even believe in humanity or the human soul and they have lost hope in themselves and in life itself. I blame the clergy. They are angry and wandering and if the ones who claim to believe would get closer to G-d it may benefit these of weak faith too.

      • .am says:

I thought God was meant to be omniscient?

        • Tommy Chong says:

From the time my kids were able to talk I have told them the truth about the jolly old man in the red suite with the bag of goodies. I wanted them to know that I’m the one who sees them when they are sleeping, who knows when their awake & who knows when they’ve been bad or good. I didn’t want them to be misled & wanted them to confide in me not the other guy. Even though I have known more about them then they think I knew I still wanted to give them the free will & means to talk to me about what I already knew. This sort of unconditional connection formed a deeper bond & means of communication between my children & I that would’ve not happened if I took the high & mighty approach. Faith cannot be forced or it’s never truly faith.

  7. js says:

after the Haitian earthquake CNN had reported that the people were driven to walking up and down the streets en masse praying.

it was sad for them cause it was a natural disaster that prompted this response unlike us

  8. heynow says:

rather than praying to God we should be praying to Uncle Sam and the almighty green back to deliver us

  9. Black says:

Yes because praying has worked out so well all these years. What a brilliant idea.

Bermuda has been deeply religious for years, maybe that’s the problem.

    • Veritas says:

Bermuda has been deeply religious…not Christian. Get it right. Plus, as someone once said, “Don’t blame the medicine, but the corrupt body of the nation who could not keep it down.” Bermuda (like America) has rejected God and has sought prosperity and pleasure as it’s “god”.
And before you all get in a hissy fit, here’s one thing I do agree. I don’t believe that the prayer should be for the nation. The world will act always like the world. It should prayer for the Church to repent and be revived in Christ Jesus. Only then will people truly see who Jesus really is.

  10. Verbal Kint says:

Was Pastor Leroy Bean in attendance? I don’t see his picture. Odd.

    • Truth is killin' me... says:

I don’t see Rev. Lambe there either…what’s up with that!?

      • Arthur Raynor - Atlanta says:

Have you ever heard of other conflicting appointments, vacations, overseas business? With over 110 churches in Bermuda, and approx 17 appearing in the photo, (some shown are not church leaders but church members) there are a lot of church Ministers (over 80 in number) ‘missing’ from that event, so why did you single out any particular church leader?
Sounds like you are stirring a pot.

        • Verbal Kint says:

Not stirring a pot. Just wondering WHY he wasn’t there.

  11. Let's Think About This... says:

What’s going to be done after the week of prayer is complete?

  12. NIKE WELLZ says:

YASS DEYA GAWD NUFF RESPECT PYAR CYASH FLOW

    BERMP BERMP PRAY BERMUDA

  13. la la dy says:

If this effort encourages the people to go out and do something in thier communities, how can this hurt? They are coming together to repent of their shortcomings and seek ways to help our island. That is a very humbling act. Before condemning them to a fairytale book, let’s see what happens. Also, for all those condemning the church, they are on the front lines helping in the community, they just don’t broadcast it.

  14. St. D says:

Boy, what a bunch of cynics you lot are.

A group praying together will focus their energy and thoughts on seeking positive solutions. That’s great whether you believe or don’t believe in a higher power.

I hope (pray) that the different church groups, which represent different sectors of our community, will align their priorities and goals and build bridges to bring us together, think together and act together.

In the meantime, I’m going to re-commit to NOT read all these negative comments.

  15. heynow says:

just saw a newspaper advert for a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom Bermuda cottage in Somerset for $599k

let them pray we need a resurrection of these property values otherwise we’re all be crying out for Jesus

  16. 32n64w says:

We may not share the same beliefs as those who attended this prayer service but that doesn’t mean we should disrespect their views or demean their choices.

  17. Elizabeth Von Trumparani says:

Come on you guys. Praying won’t do any harm. Course it won’t do any good either. If they went out and actually did something or helped someone, then it wouldn’t be a complete waste of time.

Its easier to pray though – cos its the equivalent sitting down and saying, “Oh dear”.

Many Bermudians love to pray – it means they don’t actually have to do anything.

  18. I truly feel that prayer is the key to any situation and I commend the effort but truly do not think we need to broadcast it around the media, only because this is something we do daily and the fact that we are coming together collectively should be done through the correspondence of the organizers to each local assembly.after all we are not out here to put on a show or a performance of some sort,or to prove that we are doing something in the sight of man.

We as a christian church that believes in the Lordship of Jesus Christ are coming together in unity and solemn assembly before God for repentance and reconcilliation,so we as believers need to understand this and not expect the nay sayers to.

The Bible declares dont let your good be evil spoken of and sometimes I truly believe that we do injustice to that word by what we are doing here in these photo ups. when we truly come together as a body without all the fan fare and publicity but do what we must amongst ourselves, that is when I truly believe we will see the hand of God move like He wants to in this land.

So to all who will attend,go with an open heart and mind and be mindful to be our brothers keeper, that we may live peaceable with all mankind.

  19. Building a better Bermuda says:

And what about those for whom Jesus is not the answer, there are after all as many paths to nirvana as there are people.

  20. Rockfish#1 and#2 says:

    Just wondering,
Can these reverends, preachers, pastors elders etc. preach in each others churches?

Which one is brave enough to answer that question!

  21. blessings says:

2nd Chronicles chapter 7 verse 14 says: If my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

So imagine if each of us humbled ourselves, pray, seek our Creator, turn from our wickedness – lets just give it a try, that’s all
    Blessings

  22. Crazy Lady says:

God what a crazy island I live on. Now we r turning to fairy tales to help us. SMH

    • Tommy Chong says:

If you feel that others beliefs are fairy tales then what is your truth? If you are one of the evolutionist than your holy books must be Richard Scarry’s Busytown.

  23. theothersidebda says:

If this were an article about any other faith practicing their faith there would not nearly be as many negative comments. Tell someone you practice any ‘enlightened’ Eastern religions like Buddhism and none of the non-Christians would make a comment; tell them you’re a Christian and believe in God and somehow your faith is ‘a fairy tale’ or even worse they feel compelled to downright insult you ‘just because’. The truth is that the Truth of Christianity offends people because the Truth pricks their conscience.

  24. rodney smith says:

The truth of the matter is ,as all pastors know, only a nation wide call back to Sunday sacredness will help us now.It has been the pollution of the Sabbath that has brought God’s judgements down upon us.As the churches of the day called an end to other sporting activities, so they will do again inorder to restore our nation back to a state of peace. The question is, ” Who will be the first to make this call?”

  25. Scriptures says.... says:

    Matthew 6:1-8

Also, where is the joy? I see no joy in their faces.

  26. Franni says:

Joy? In a serious matter? And yes there are people who pray AND do something. Pray for guidance and how to help. Whether you believe in God or not, we all need to help someone. No man is an island. The demise of this island, this world is partly because of selfishness. Believers and non. Blessings to all.
