Minister Moniz: “Confident” Dock Will Be Ready

May 3, 2013

The Minister of Public Works Trevor Moniz said that Heritage Wharf work is are proceeding well despite early setbacks ans they are “confident” that we will be ready for the Norwegian Breakaway to dock at Heritage Wharf on May 15th.

The $22.36 million project is scheduled to be completed in time for the arrival of the 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway cruise ship which is due to arrive in under two weeks, becoming the largest cruise ship to ever visit the island.

Pile driving will be completed today on the breasting dolphin structures and efforts will be concentrated on concreting the dolphin caps. These works involve a lot of heavy lifting from barges to place the precast and prefabricated elements and close control is essential during this activity to ensure the safety of the workforce.

“We continue to be vigilant for any potential delays to progress and have received support from the Department of Marine and Ports who will be introducing a temporary speed limit for the site area,” Minister Moniz said.

“This limit will be legally enforceable and with support from the Marine Police Section we will ensure that passing vessels do not transgress. We again ask that all marine traffic reduce speed while in the area and observe this limit during the works,” the Minister added.

A five knot wake restriction applies to a boat entering, navigating and exiting the waters of Grassy Bay, Heritage Wharf, Dockyard and this restriction on boats and ships is to enable marine construction work to continue.

I don’t know much about construction, but I hope that the cement has time to set before it is put to the ultimate test in 2 weeks!!

    • Jo Blo says:

Concrete *generally* reaches 75% of it’s 28-day design strength in approximately 7 days. They’re probably using a setting additive also; no engineer’s going to put their butt on the line, you can trust that.

  3. boston baked bean says:

There’s a rumour making the rounds that the Breakaway trip has been cancelled. Can anyone verify?

    • SoMuchMore says:

Another legacy of that old UBP group. Doesn’t it make you sick? Projects on time and probably on or near budget. Have not seen that for so long.

Moniz is fist a lawyer and not even a very good one, why on earth should we believe a word he says about a subject he knows absolutely nothing about

    • Errin Butterfield says:

Agreed. When/if the dock is completed on time for the arrival of The Norwegian Breakaway I will congratulate and believe what is now being said. Not a minute before. Seeing is believing

    • Mad Dawg says:

Did you used to prefer when an obnoxious doorman used to give us excuses why building work was always late and over budget?

    • OMG says:

What compared to Derek Burgess (or any of the others prior to him)?? Be real!!!!

      you show your ignorance…

  7. Just Sayin says:

Hey observer you have a very convenient memory. The West Gate Prison didn’t come in on budget. Matter of fact the Sea Land construction company had to be bailed out to the tune of 2million dollars. But it’s ok as long as it is one the white boy companies that is bailed out. The airport didn’t come inon budget either.

  8. blankman says:

Just think – we wouldn’t have to worry about whether or not this would be completed on schedule if it had been done correctly the first time around.
