PLP Shadow Minister On Police Crime Statistics
Shadow Minister for Public Safety Michael Scott commented on the recently released 2013 Crime Statistics saying he wanted to focus on the real power behind the numbers.
Mr. Scott said, “These numbers represent good news for Bermuda and good news for Bermudians. The strong measures the PLP put in place including stronger laws and tougher sentences, have taken criminals off the streets and helped make Bermuda safer for our people.
“The current crime statistics represent a downward trend that began in 2009 and continued up to the present. The real credit should not go to the OBA, but to our Police Commissioner Michael Desilva and the fine men and women under his command. Under his leadership, we’ve seen impeccable investigative work leading to more arrests and more convictions. Our partnership with the Bermuda Police Service and the legislative and policy seeds planted by the PLP are bearing fruit for our people today.”
Mr. Scott continued, “From making gangs, guns, drugs and public order a priority to funding specialist investigations, introducing tougher laws and sentences alongside the mobilization of our community, progress has been made. From witness protection to electronic monitoring of offenders, the former government put the resources behind our Police Service to get the job done. Our people are taking their neighbourhoods back and the Anti Gang Strategy begun under the PLP is working.”
The Shadow Minister concluded, “I must give special praise and thanks to the people living in communities hardest hit and most impacted by crime, for partnering with the community policing strategies. Whether through neighbourhood watches, providing hard intelligence that leads to arrests, serving on juries or simply showing the courage to speak out, you are taking our streets back.”

“the legislative and policy seeds planted by the PLP are bearing fruit for our people today.”
Yea. Trying to outlaw hoodies and white T-Shirts.
That’s about all I remember of “Policies” made by the PLP.
too bad the crime statisics do not include the corporate crimes of money stolen and unrivaled patronage under the PLP administation…
ya hit it right on the nail bye’
Thank you Mr. Scott.
Funny how the OBA trying to take credit for things with 6 months BUT when challenged on other things, the response is “it’s only been 6 months, give us time.”
Can’t have it both ways!
Where did the OBA take credit for this fall?
All I have seen is the police commissioner’s announcement.
What is really funny is that when the PLP was in power and crime was rising they blamed it on the fact that the BPS fell under the Governor’s remit and thus their hands were tied. Now, after being out of power for 7 months or so, they all of a sudden want to take credit for positive developments. Going off their previous logic shouldn’t the praise be going to the Governor?
And if the PLP can take credit for such positive developments and point to their policies, then why do they refuse to take responsibility for any negative developments in the last year or so?
+1
LOL
Why is it when one of the Sheep make an idiotic comment, it is almost always rebutted with a completely logical comment usually backed with some facts and highlights the Sheep Hypocricy? When will the Sheep learn? When? SMFH
Are you kidding me, it’s the other way around. The PLP want to take credit for this since 2009, but not the financial mess they put this Island through. Can’t have it both ways
If the PLP take full credit for the current news about improvement in crime, then it follows they must take full blame for the current news about the state of the economy.
Having trouble figuring out if he is happy the statistics are improving or taking the opportunity to toot the PLP’s horn.
Possibly the nicest shadow reply.
Mr. Scott, if you want ALL the credit for the current statistics to be given only for the P.L.P., then have at it. As far as am concerned, the only people that should be praised are the members of those communities who LISTENED AND FOLLOWED THROUGH on reporting the crimes in their neighborhoods. I’m pretty sure that you don’t know that IT IS THE FUNCTION OF ALL GOVERNMENTS TO PROTECT THEIR CITIZENS.
For you to INSIST that this a “Feather” in the P.L.P.’s cap…. then it we should also be BLAMING YOU for the INCREASE over the past 14 years. Something tells me you would be proud of BOTH stats….Ehh?!?!?
its quite clear that Mr. Scott did give credit to the police and the community as well.
“The real credit should not go to the OBA, but to our Police Commissioner Michael Desilva and the fine men and women under his command. Under his leadership, we’ve seen impeccable investigative work leading to more arrests and more convictions.”
In addition, he said -
“I must give special praise and thanks to the people living in communities hardest hit and most impacted by crime, for partnering with the community policing strategies. Whether through neighbourhood watches, providing hard intelligence that leads to arrests, serving on juries or simply showing the courage to speak out, you are taking our streets back.”
Yes he did give the PLP credit, as he should, but let’s not be disingenous and act like he didn’t give credit in other areas as well.
The strong measures the PLP put in place including stronger laws and tougher sentences, have taken criminals off the streets and helped make Bermuda safer for our people.
THE plp IS SO FULL of $h!T!!
Nuffin never add a dollar sign ($) in the same sentence with the plp LOL
Good Point!
Good job OBA!
Murders exploded under the PLP,and MP Scott wants to toot his own horn, give us a break!
Just a couple of words for the PLP……………..SHUT UP.
Well done Mr. Dunkley, keep up the good work, guns, guns, guns. Get em off the streets!
Crime has gotten better, because there locked up or dead!
Amazing isn’t folks.
The increase in Black on Black murders…..not the P.L.P’S FAULT.
Increase in Payroll Taxes and I.B. Businesses leaving…. not the P.L.P’S FAULT.
Increase of Bermies losing their jobs and can’t afford to pay their bills…. not the P.L.P.’S FAULT.
Not being intelligent enough to revitalize the economy…. not the P.L.P.’S FAULT.
Being unable to attract new hotels to the Island…. not the P.L.P.’S FAULT.
Not finding ways to decrease our debt in under 5 years…. not the P.L.P’S FAULT.
If nothing was the P.L.P.’s fault then who was to blame for the last 14 years of governance….. The National Liberal Party Government?!?!?!
LOL!!!! Its all the NLP’s fault! Stand strong PLP, you were the best Government ever and non of it was your fault! WOOO HHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHHAA….
Good work to all those involved well spoken Mr. Scott.
Good work by the police and the community. Gun crime came out and exploded under the PLP. If they want to take credit, take it for all.
you have hit it right on the nail ma bye’
god!st,S*** donkey ****
I will give the PLP credit for putting together legislation to help the police in their effort to tackle Bermuda’s rising crime rate, after all this effort isn’t just a result didn’t just come about in the last 7 months, but would have been as a result of work being done over the last year or 2. However, as I recall, the PLP left several programs started, but no funding to follow through with and sitting ideal. I am also appalled by the their statement where they say that this was through the effort of the police, but then go on to repeatedly praise themselves and their legislation in just about every other sentence. This after spending how many years complaining they were unable to effectively tackle crime because they didn’t have direct control of the police. Dispite the veiled claim this PLP statement makes, the OBA did not try to take credit for this drop, but gave it squarely to the police and the community, which is more than can be said about this. After having listen to Mr. Scott, I am left with the feeling that this is less a statement from the shadow minister in response to the release of the crime statistics, and more a propaganda statement from the PLP spin machine trying to inflate themselves.
In the end, the true measure will be how long these statistics can be maintained and how effective we can utilize our corrections system to ensure that we can maintain them in the longer run.
I totally agree with you, “Building a Better Bermuda” and I only wish to see the “patting of oneself upon the back” cease so we as an Island community may get on rectifying the wrongs that have been neglected for soooo damn long…far too long! Mr. Michael Scott is a darn good man and I’m sure he only wants to see and do what’s correct for each of us “but”, in order for that to happen he,(and others on all sides)need to stop the politic-ing and get down to the “Knitty gritty”
Cmon Bernews I Will Hook You Up
I am pleased to see Mr. Scott’s inclusion in the new look PLP team and know with his wealth of experience he can make an important and good contribution. Bearing this in mind, I do think that he is the man to clarify his party’s position on same sex marriage and on gay, lesbian and transsexual rights generally.
MICHAEL, PLEASE SPEAK UP!
Don’t we all live in the same country? Shouldn’t we ALL be grateful that crime is down?? Should it even matter which acronym is in power?? Until the people of Bermuda unite as a country, with no political grandstanding, we will never realize our full potential.
We all had and still have a part to play, not just OBA or PLP, who cares who started it lets keep the trend going.
Follow the money.
PLP did some good.
Follow the money.
$800 million + .
I doubt Michael saw much of it.
