Brown: Concern Over Teacher Transfer Handling

August 19, 2013

walton brown plp bermudaThe lack of consistency in dealing with teacher transfers has caused further unease among teachers and a diminution of trust, Shadow Minister of Education Walton Brown said today [Aug 19].

Mr Brown said, “As the Shadow Minister for Education, I express my concern over the lack of consistency in dealing with teacher transfers as I understand that some teacher transfers will still take place as originally planned.

“I can confirm that despite an earlier statement by the Ministry of Education that all teachers transfers had been revoked, a number have been allowed to proceed.

“This inconsistency in the application of decisions designed to improve the delivery of public education has only caused further unease among teachers and a diminution of trust.

“It is imperative that the development of a framework for making these decisions across all levels of the public school system is acted upon immediately. Once again, my offer to assist the Minister stands as we are both committed to making our education system better,” concluded Mr. Brown.

Good job Walton…i like how you are on the Ministry’s case and ensuring the right things are done. I wish you were the Minister of Education.

    • Zombie Apocalypse says:

Had he been the current PLP minister of education he would have been the 12th PLP education minister in 14 years. I guess they all had to have a turn; that way no-one gets left taking any blame.

      • watching says:

yeah because the system they inherited was sooo perfect wasn’t it? I agree that the PLP had too many Ministers of Education but that has nothing to do with the fact that the OBA Min of Ed hasnt a clue about what to do.

        • inna says:

and you think the system the OBA inherited is any better than the system inherited by the PLP? i highly doubt it!

        • Sandy Bottom says:

If the system they inherited wasn’t perfect, they had 14 years to improve it. Instead they put a succession of bumblings fools in place, and now we have 700+ civil servants supervising 500 teachers. That’s the mess inherited by the OBA.

  2. SoMuchMore says:

now this bird brain wants to offer assistance, pleeze. Walter give it a break.

  3. Onion says:

I have to say there isn’t a lot of information in this. It could be as he says and they have randomly allowed some teachers to transfer. On the other hand it could be that these were necessary transfers to replace leaving teachers.

  4. tricks are for kids says:

If government hadn’t buckled under pressure to the Victor Scott PTA we would not be visiting this space today….

Teachers can randomly be moved as per our collective bargaining agreement. ..when you are hired you are told that you work for the Ministry not the school to which you are assigned.

Since the ruling in the VSS case everytime since which a teacher has been selected to transfer there has been an issue…that particular ruling opened a whole can of worms…

    • watching says:

Government didnt buckle…didn’t the courts decide?

I agree with you…teachers should be able to be transferred wherever the Ministry deems fit.

      • Sandy Bottom says:

I guess those 700 civil servants have to make themselves look busy.

    • You're right says:

      Amen

  5. hehe says:

Shadow Ministers are obstuctionist. Do not mask your ultimate attempt to discredit the current Minister with random acts of kindness. I know its your job to complain about everything but c’mon bra, stop micro managing. Half of the reason transfers didnt take place is because of power tripping PTAs that think they are school boards now since winning in court.

  6. Cavello Bay says:

I remember when i went Berkeley Institute i had 3 different math teachers in one year! One teacher had the nerve to tell me, “i am missing some work and i have 2 do it over again” so i said “no its not my fault we had 3 different math teachers in one year and thats how my work got lost!” Thank god i already had a passing grade at the time cuz i would have failed math! Mr. Brown this came under YOUR government, a brainwash education! And this wasn’t the first time it happened in many other classes can you explain that to me! So dont act like you are concerned about education, the problem is NOT teacher transfers, its gettin the right teachers to TEACH and being able 2 finish the full year! Do you know how many children YOUR government failed over the years of the 14 year rule because of this!!!? Some parents that have kids getting educated by the public system need STOP complaining and look harder within the system, 2 complain about teacher transfers is absolutely laughable!!!

  7. watchfuleyes says:

I don’t hear anyone telling the Courts that they got the decision wrong. The Ministry did not buckle, the Courts have spoken. All teachers have letters of agreement, yes but some teachers who are coordinators have letters of contract, which dictates that they will remain at certain schools, until a given date. Now if the Ministry wishes to move those teachers they would in essence have been breaking those teachers’ contracts. So the Ministry needs to go back to the drawing board, and re-evaluate their purpose and objectives for transfers in the first place. What is Walton going to do? How about transferring out some of the Education officers, the Minister and whoever else is responsible for coming up with these useless ideas of transfers in the first place.

    • lol says:

Start with Principals first…. An organization is only as good as its management. Go take a survey at how teachers feel about who is running thier school. You would be surprised. In some cases it is a complete mess and bad fit for who they have at certain places and it shows. Someone bring up some test results. Being likable, your cousin, church member etc should not qualify you to run a school…..that message is to the PTAs. ciao.

He loves media attention. He is like a twitter virus…..lol!

  9. Unjrust Realities says:

It’s really not a matter of the MOED buckling under pressure or the judge’s decision, as neither of these would have occurred had the MOED followed the protocols that they as an institution set forth.

If we want to look at inconsistencies, we first must look at how appointments are made. Are they based on skill, effectiveness and qualifications, or based on nepotism, and who knows who and who like who.

Therein lies the root of the demise of our system!!!

  10. CommonSensenBda says:

Mr. Brown, to the intelligent out here, the constant vitriol of the P.L.P.constantly “offering” their “help” is to fool the electorate that your party wants to be the “shadow government” behind the false government of the O.B.A.
The electorate voted for the change to an O.B.A. government, not a return of the administration that sent us down into the abyss. Slick plan though, sure the vast majority of Ewart’s people thought it was a magnificient idea.

  11. Raymond Ray says:

Walton Brown, if you are “willing” to help but the Minister appears to be neglecting your offer then just reveal to us, (the public) what are these great plans of yours that will help our children. Or, are you only,(once again)on an ego trip?

  12. This is utter foolishness. Shame on the Ministry of Education and the B.U.T. Neither have it right. If an educator desires to transfer from one school setting to another, what is wrong with that? Where is the FREEDOM OF CHOICE to relocate. If an educator is unhappy/wanting change from one school setting to another, what should stop the educator from relocating? The Ministry needs to become more democratic and allow educator changes. Isn’t that a part of democracy – FREEDOM TO CHOOSE???
Wake up Ministry and B.U.T. Educators must feel happy so that their productivity and output is THE BEST it can and should be!!
