Eight People Face $5.9 Million Drug Charges

August 30, 2013

Eight people appeared in front of Senior Magistrate Archie Warner in Magistrates Court this morning [Aug 30] charged with a conspiracy to supply the illegal drug cannabis.

Crown Prosecutor Cindy Clarke told the Senior Magistrate that the total amount of drugs was 120 kilos [264lbs] with a street value of approximately $5.9 million. This was alleged to have happened between a date unknown and 29th November 2012.

Iman Gibbons, Corte Gibbons, Shannon Trott, Damon Edwards, Brian Anderson, Dina Tucker, John Bernell Jefferies, and Darrin Virgil did not have to enter a plea as the charge is indictable and will be heard in the Supreme Court.

Darrin Virgil, Corte Gibbons, Iman Gibbons, John Bernell Jefferis, and Damon Edwards were charged separately with conspiring to import cannabis between a date unknown and 26th November 2012.

Iman Gibbons, Corte Gibbons, and Shannon Trott were charged with permitting a house on Limehouse Lane to be used in connection with the use of the illegal drug cannabis.

All were granted bail of $100,000 each and each must surrender all travel documents.

Iman Gibbons made a plea to Senior Magistrate Archie Warner and complained of his treatment thus far. However the Senior Magistrate rejected his submission and left his bail conditions unchanged.

    • DaRealest Clark says:

Often times with drugs, the estimate given is come to by looking at how much it would be worth if sold in smaller amounts. For example, if a gram of chron in Bermy is ~$50, calculate 50 x however many grams 264lbs is.

legalize cannabis for medicinal and recreational use for 25+yr olds.

    make alcohol more controlled

this will help stop gang activity, and dramatically decrease alcohol relate crimes.

i know many people who died from alcohol. not one soul has ever died from cannabis. MILLIONS are healed by cannabis.

alcohol is a poison, but our brain and body make its own cannabinoids.

the only reason you get “high” off cannabis is because our brain ALREADY has cannanaboid receptors for it!

    • Come On Man says:

      Very true

    • Bazumbo says:

The gang activity won’t stop if u legalise weed??? Gang activity as we know is thriving because of a screwed up by a bunch of low lives that have made a concius decision not to offer anything productive to society. They fight and mark their territory like dogs do. Many of these guys sell drugs as a way to make money because it is easy and they have no jobs.

Legalising weed will not stop gangs like many want to believe. They will still be unmotivated punks that need money and will still be addicted to their weed and other drugs. If weed is no longer their income they will resort to other easy ways like robbery, home invasions,

I agree to decriminalising weed but not legalising it.

      • Sandy Bottom says:

In Holland cannabis is legal, and drug gangs are a major problem. Drug tourism is being discouraged because it is regarded as a nuisance, encouraging criminal activity.

The morons here just want it legalised and they think everything would be fine. It wouldn’t.

        • Tommy Chong says:

In Netherlands cannabis is illegal at present & has been ever since they signed a prohibition treaty with America many decades ago. The drug gangs in Netherlands deal ecstasy not cannabis because unlike cannabis ecstasy is not decriminalized & tolerated under certain conditions. Cannabis in Netherlands is sold in government licenced cannabis cafes which are held under high scrutiny & are shut down by law enforcement if they find even one underage person in the establishment or if any drug other than cannabis is fund sold in there. Drug tourism is only seen as a nuisance in 2 out of 12 provinces in Netherlands & the other 10 embrace it because the lucrativeness of it & that it helps keep the trade off the black market. The 2 that find it a nuisance feel this way because they border other countries they want to keep in the good books with who can’t stand it when tourist bring weed across the border from these provinces in essence the problem is with the shoddy border controls in these other countries & them using Netherlands as a scapegoat for their poor work. These two provinces are the ones who agreed to a locals only cannabis cafe law & now regret it because it has caused a new market for turkish gangs in these areas & made crime worse.

Before calling others morons it may be a good to get your facts straight first so that your name calling doesn’t turn into a boomerang like it just did. ;)

  8. Grand Wizzard says:

Recent scientific and historic documentary exposes reality of how mankind evolved alongside Cannabis, and how that one plant alone has made manking evolve socially and technologically for hundreds of thousands of years.

And in one last century some bigots make it illegal based on what?

In early 1900s the American government made it illegal and produced a propaganda film which demonized marijuana as the “devil’s weed” which made you into a serial killer with bugged open eyes. This is demented nonsense. Weed does the opposite. This film caused the momentum for the illegalization of it, in order that Mexican and Negro minorities could be shipped off the streets and into jails, where racist politicians and police wanted them.
Before then, it was sold in pharmacies as medicine.

Since then, hundreds of millions of people have suffered and even died from cancer and other diseases and ailments which could have been healed or cured by cannabis.

enough for now……. use your common sense. legalize it!

    • Sandy Bottom says:

“Mankind evolved alongside cannabis”? You realise you’re talking s***, don’t you?

      • Tommy Chong says:

You do realize cannabis is a plant that used to grow wildly on every continent since prehistoric times? Don’t you? Would you have said the statement was nonsense if it read, “Mankind evolved alongside cotton.”?

This seems to be a subject you have zero knowledge of so I invite you to click the link below to begin your path of enlightenment.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemp

        • Sandy Bottom says:

No, it would not make sense to say “mankind evolved alongside cotton”. It displays complete misunderstanding of the concept of evolution.

          • Tommy Chong says:

You must be one who misunderstands the concept of evolution if you don’t see the relationship between the tools that subspecies of homo sapiens found uses for that played a part in their evolvement into modern humans. As we used these tools to forward our evolvement we also had a part in the way the tools we used evolved. This is why the modern orange tree reproduction system differs much from the orange trees of the first humans. There are many other instances where our evolution has pushed the evolution plants, animals & other things.

  9. Malachi says:

To the powers that be – just tax the stuff!

Of note is that the Obama administration just a few days ago decided NOT to pursue suing states which have decided to allow recreational use of marijuana., citing it “a waste of time”.

It’s clear that the law cannot stop it, so do the sensible thing and tax it!

  14. only in Bermuda says:

    Grand Wizzard

Many people have died from using cannabis. Have you looked at the road fatalities lately. On the job accidents and incidents related to drug use. Oh so how many of these people carrying out these crimes do you think is high or in their right mind? It’s a mind altering drug. What don’t you people get.

Allegedly 5.9 million come on. How does that much drugs allegedly get on the Island without inside connection. How much was sold before the bust. Shame only the small people only get caught.

  15. Whistling Frog says:

There’s no way 264 lbs of herb is worth $5.9 Million… That would mean a pound would go for around $22’348.00 (Twenty two thousand dollars)

    • Come Correct says:

They basically charge you for what it’s worth completely broken down to street value during a drought. So lets say $50 a gram, 28grams to an ounce, 16 ounces to a pound. $22,400 a pound. These days, and I’m not sure, buying in bulk or a pound it would cost somewhere between 10 and 16,000 depending on supply because there always a demand. So your looking at a $4,000+ profit margin, and for some that’s in a single day. So why the government hasn’t capitalized on this yet is beyond me.

    • Sandy Bottom says:

Really? What does – say – 5 grams cost on the street?

      • Whistling Frog says:

Basically they’re saying 5 grams will cost you $247.00 SMH

        • Tommy Chong says:

$247!!!! All the herb smokers in Bermuda must be billionaires.

  16. Tiger Lily says:

The executive of the Drug Policy Alliance in USA, Ethan Nadelmann, hailed the US Justice Dept’s decision NOT to challenge state laws that permit recreational use of marijuana as foresight from Obama and supports referring offenders to treatment rather than incarceration.

    • Sandy Bottom says:

Oh really. Is the alleged transhipment of $6m worth “recreational use” then, in your mind?,

  17. Frank says:

The real question is where is it all now?

  18. F1Mikal in NYC says:

Has anyone figured out how many people it would take take to smoke all ’264 lbs’?
