Video: Miss Bermuda Returns From Indonesia

September 30, 2013

Miss Bermuda Katherine Arnfield returned to the island this evening [Sept 30] after spending the past few weeks in Indonesia taking part in the 2013 Miss World Competition, which she called an “amazing” experience.

Speaking at the airport she extended her thanks to everyone for supporting her throughout the journey, and said it was a “once in a lifetime experience”.

Asked about the safety aspects, due to the threats made against the pageant by extremists, the teenage beauty queen said she felt safe as there was heavy security including helicopters and warships.

The Saltus Grammar Student was crowned the 2013 Miss Bermuda on June 23 beating out six other competitors for the title. She flew to Indonesia late last month, joining 130 other beauty queens from around the world.

The contestants took part in a number of ‘Challenge Events’ during September; including Beach Fashion, Beauty with a Purpose, Top Model, World Fashion Designer Award, Talent Competition, and Sports and Fitness.

Ms Arnfield speaking about the experience at the airport this evening:

The traditional bikini round was axed for the pageant in Indonesia in a bid to avoid causing offence in the Muslim-majority country, and contestants would instead wear Balinese sarongs.

Organizers faced protests from several groups, prompting the UK government to issue a warning of a high threat of terrorism in the country, saying that “extremists may be planning attacks targeting the Miss World Pageant being held in Bali.”

Despite the concerns, the event went off safely, with Miss Philippines Megan Young taking the overall title, Miss France Marine Lorphelin placing second, and Miss Ghana Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter taking third place. The complete final placings have not been released, so it remains unclear where Miss Bermuda finished.
