Man In Custody, 18 Yr Old In Stable Condition
The 18 year old injured in last night’s incident in St Monica’s Mission/Glebe Road “attended the area with other young people to participate in anti-social behaviour organised through social media,” the police said today.
They also confirmed that a 34 year old man was taken in custody, and said the 18 year old is presently in stable condition in the ICU, having initially been listed as critical last night.
A police spokesperson said, “Whilst police acknowledge that the investigation is in its early stages, initial accounts indicate that the incident involved participants engaged in a heated verbal altercation which appears to have escalated into objects being thrown by parties in the area.”
“Forensic evidence from the scene has been collected for examination, as well as CCTV footage from the area, to assist in progressing this investigation. In addition, a 34 year old male from Pembroke has been taken into custody by detectives investigating the matter.”
The incident occurred at around 5.45pm last night, with unofficial reports indicating a hammer was used to hit the 18 year old, and a hammer was clearly visible at the crime scene.
The full police statement is below:

Hey if this young man attended the area with other young people to participate in anti-social behaviour !! then i think he got what he deserved..Time to paratice the eye for an eye saying..
An eye for an eye is why there is so much violence in Bermuda. I am not saying that the 34 year old was not justified in defending himself, but the mentality that you are showing is certainly not helping the issue.
While the government spend millions on CCTV in the name of protecting people, shouldn’t people be asking why GET cameras that are in St Monica offer any clues to this incident? maybe we are too harsh on GET, but there has to be some accountability somewhere.
Valuable tax payers monies invested in technology that ultimately does not help.
BAS/Serco aint going to be any better.
Thouhgts?
It does sound like he was not an innocent victim.
It was self defense as far as I can see. The “victim” was part of a group of people participating in anti-social behaviour who are throwing items at an individual. The individual hits the ringleader with the hammer and the others scatter.
The laws here protect so many criminals more than the law-abiding citizens. What about the guy that was prosecuted for assault on the man that broke into his home with wife/gf and children with duct tape and a knife. The man who defended himself and family had to face trial. Granted, he got a conditional discharge but case should have been dismissed.
Maybe if the people breaking into others’ homes knew that the individual inside could legally defend themselves they might be a little less willing to break in to people houses in the first place.
He got a conditional discharge?! What were the conditions? That man deserved a medal.
….more like it’s time to practice ‘love thy neighbour’,or peace and love in the community. Also, what about ‘two wrongs don’t make a right’, or ‘you reap what you sow’, or ‘vengeance is mine, says the Lord’………
Why is a 34 year old having an altercation with an 18 year old? What the hell is wrong with some people.
They’re both adults are they not?
nooo 18 years old??? eight-TEEN < say it with me ?
Hes a fricking TEENAGER!
So he’s a teenager, yet old enough to vote and drink? I’m confused. In this country 18 is an adult.
The riots are coming…
Indeed they are.
Maybe, but in the rough bits. That won’t make a difference.
@ markus the “mentality that i am showing is certainly not helping the issue”
Guess you never had a person come through your window at 3am in the morning or a child relative been interfared with ,perhaps the problem is not with me , but people like you who always want to stick up for a victim ,when in reality is truly the problem !!All i can say to the 18 year old is next time wear a helmet..
I am relative sure that the majority of people who have gotten shot in the past few years were shot on a retaliatory basis. Does that make it ok?
Probably should have told the kid to roll over on his back so he could scratch his belly huh? Come my yard for anti-social behaviour and you can foget ICU, you’ll be DOA.
What address do you live at?
Why do you want to know?
You don’t, that’s what I thought.
That doesn’t make it ok.
However, if they were stabbed/bludgeoned by someone they were attacking, then I feel it is more understandable. If they were stabbed and/or bludgeoned after breaking into someones home and being discovered there. Then I feel that is acceptable. If someone was to break into my house and force me and my family to feel threatened I will not just let them attack. You don’t know if they are armed etc.
However, if my house was broken into and I discovered who it was after the fact. I am not going to harm them. I will let the justice system deal with it.
In short I don’t agree with retaliatory attacks. However if this was a case of self defense as it appears to be. Than this man should not be prosecuted.
You do have a right to feel the way that you do….BUT before making “off cuff” remarks (I do understand that you are only going by what is being REPORTED) you should get the FULL story first…..
34 year old attacking a 18 year old? come on do better hes young enough to be your son!!
Where does it say that the 34yo was the attacker?
If it’s self-defence, age doesn’t matter. If an 18 year old is coming at you to do you harm, are you going to say “Now, now, son…I’m old enough to be your father so I won’t put up a fight”??? You are going to do what you have to do to defend yourself.
It’s all relative. What if an 80 year old feels threatened by a 30 year old? The 80 year old is not supposed to fight back because the guy is young enough to be his grandson???
An 18 year old is an adult. If it was a 34 year old and a 10 year old then we can criticize but 18 is grown and if you need to defend yourself against an 18 year old you will.
Wtf 34 years old?
now tell me how do you explain this to your kids . . .
Pleeease @dismayed; ‘i dont understand; and ‘Next’:
Most of the nonsensical behavior is coming from youths under the age of 18 or around that age; so you are clearly out of touch!
The problem is; as I can relate; when you’re young you feel invincible, because you feel like no full grown man can actually retaliate to me!?… and at the age ‘kids’ are so testy, and actually are responsible for alot of these killings and jumpings and robberies.. so you can’t condemen a man for apparently defending himself.. there are 15 year olds in Bermuda bigger than full grown men, so don’t get at a man for handling some 18-year old when the yout came lookin for trouble.
I will not say he got what he deserved. I may say that if someone did something to me or my family. Of course different story. I am not saying that violent acts are ok. I am glad to read comments that address the reality that many of these incidents occur because of retaliation. Not a clear cut unfair attack. And then some people are surprised when the following week there is another attack. They live in a world of violence yet expect no one to do anything to them but feel it is ok to hurt and kill someone. The vicious cycle continues. I steal from you or attack you but get offended when you seek revenge. Back and forth. As far as age. Some 34 year olds are just s caught up. Just been in the ‘game’ longer.
Send them all to the District of Republic of Congo where being a boy soldier is mot what these guys think it is! They will be crying and begging to leave. neing drigged and brainwashed to fight because the older men do not care whether the boys live or die.they just go and steal more innocent boys and train them. They truly are innocent victims brainwashed and drugged to be killers. Watch blood diamonds. The documentary and the movie.
WAIT for the real story…..It is not as it seems…………..
“I’ll teach that old forker a lesson shot caller. Me and tha boyz ‘ll sort it out!”Moments later………WAAAAAAAAAP…………..CRICKETS…………….SIRENS…………………..PAPERS……………GOSSIP…………….PARENTS:NOT MY BOOOOOOOOY!!!!!!
remember some of these teens are growing bigger then there parents and you cant tell them nothen so the old school rule remands cant listen u must feel . You know what you sign up for when join any gang take it as it comes to you
They should send them to beyond scared straight program overseas that would sort them out.
I apologize for insensitivity; to anyone affected by this grevious incident; family, friends and associates related.. it is sad that things have gotten so out of hand.
