Bermuda Youth Orchestra Concert On Sunday

November 22, 2013

The Bermuda Youth Orchestra will present their fall concert “Skyfall ” along with the Bermuda Regiment Band. The concert will be held on Sunday [Nov 24] beginning at 4:00 pm at St. John’s Church, Pembroke. This is the first concert of the organization’s 2013-14 concert series.

The BYO string division performed earlier in the year and this academic season has seen the orchestra expand with the addition of wind instruments: flutes, trumpets, and trombones, etc. “We’re very excited about the orchestra’s growth,” says instructor Ms. Tiffany Fox.

Ms. Fox is the music teacher at CedarBridge Academy and has been one of the driving forces behind the orchestra. “As this first year with the BYO progresses it has become more and more evident that an island-wide youth symphony was long overdue.”

Trailer of “Skyfall”:

Maj. Dwight Robinson, Conductor for the BYO explains the inclusion of the Bermuda Regiment Band. “I am also the Director of Music for the Bermuda Regiment and firmly believe that a cooperative spirit is critical to the success of any organization, especially one as abstract as music.

“The BYO has included winds to the programme this year and they are a welcome addition. There are some gaps, however, and in an effort to encourage the students in their development we thought it would be useful to scaffold them with members of the Bermuda Regiment Band—to act as a kind of musical mentor.

“This also gives the orchestra scope to attempt slightly more challenging music; pieces which will stretch the students. Next to increasing their musical capabilities, the most important piece for us is the integrity of the performance and ensuring that the students can come away from the concert having put on a performance they can be proud of.”

“From a military perspective, the Bermuda Regiment Band has not played in the concert format for a while and this was a good opportunity to play different repertoire to that which constitutes our normal playlist. This is also an excellent opportunity to model for the younger musicians and to engage them in conversations about the good things which can come from being an accomplished musician.”

Developing musicians perform because they practice. This dedicated group of musicians has been at it since August—even before this academic school year started. Now is the opportunity for them to showcase that which they have been concentrating on. Tickets for the concert, on sale at The Music Box, are $10 for general admission and $50 for patrons. They can also be purchased from BYO members.
