MP Furbert Calls On Premier To “Come Clean”

February 24, 2014

Following Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell saying that the Premier’s business manager — who traveled on the private jet with the Premier and two Cabinet Ministers last year — attended meetings with the developer, Shadow Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert called on the Premier to “come clean.”

Mr. Furbert said, “The contradiction between Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell’s account of the events surrounding JetGate and the claims made by the Premier have created more questions than answers about the Premier’s relationship with the investor Nathan Landow, and the reason for the divergent accounts.

“The Premier was not upfront with the people of Bermuda about the junket taken by he and his colleagues in violation of the Ministerial Code of Conduct. Were it not for this story being leaked by an OBA insider, the public might never have known that this dubious action was taken by key members of the OBA government.

“The Premier was not upfront with the people of Bermuda when, once the JetGate 3 were caught violating the Ministerial Code yet he failed to reveal that the business manager of his private enterprise was also on that private jet.

“The Premier’s claims that his business manager was simply, “bumming a lift,” have now been contradicted by the Premier’s own Tourism Minister who claimed last week on Magic 102.7′s The Sherri Simmons Show that the Premier’s business manager not only attended the secret meetings with the developer but also made presentations at the meetings.

“This chain of events paints a very disturbing picture of a Premier, who prior to the December 2012 election, preached transparency, openness and accountability, yet now seems more focused on cover-ups and potentially making backroom deals than in being honest with the people of Bermuda.

“In the interest of transparency, openness and accountability, we call on Premier Cannonier to come clean with the details surrounding this entire trip and to be accountable to the people for he and his Minister’s actions,” concluded Mr. Furbert.

In response, the Premier’s Press Secretary said, “No comment will be given to these questions at this time, as they may relate to the judicial proceedings that were issued last week.”

Oh for the mother of God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I said on the commissiong article that the plp remind me of tag team wrestlers??? They are constantly tagging each other as they get in and out of the ring to criticize the OBA, now we have flip flop??? PLEASE can somebody tell them that if they had not screwed everything up so badly in their reign of terror, they might still be in power!!! Everyday it is the same nonsense by them, but never once have they offered anything of substance to fix THEIR MESS’!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Hmmm says:

WOW, THE PLP ARE IN FULL ON PANIC MODE over the lawsuits. Look at them all lining up.

      • BETTTY TRUMP says:

“I LOVE THIS OPPOSITION HOLDING THE GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABLE”

This powerful opposition continues to hold the government accountable on keep matters. The OPPOSITION Continues to ensure the government operates in a manner which is TRANSPARENT and HONEST. The Opposition are very effective in their role, as to ensure that they are doing the people’s business. This is key in any Democracy.

TRANSPARENCY IS something the UBPoba promised Bermuda pre=election, and as a result none of their diehardblindfaithfulness followers should have no problem with this.

        Much Love to Bermuda.

        • BETTTY TRUMP says:

HOLDING THE GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABLE REQUIRES THAT KEY QUESTIONS ARE ASKED. NO PROBLEM IS RESOLVED BY JUST FORGETTING IT OR PRETENDING IT DID NOT TAKE PLACE

MR FURBERT HAS ASKED ANSWERS TO KEY QUESTIONS.

“The Premier’s claims that his business manager was simply, “bumming a lift,” have now been contradicted by the Premier’s own Tourism Minister who claimed last week on Magic 102.7′s The Sherri Simmons Show that the Premier’s business manager not only attended the secret meetings with the developer but also made presentations at the meetings.”

TRANSPARENCY IS KILLING THE UBPOba….if not just be open and answer the QUestions.

          TRANSPARENCY…doing politics different…REALLY ….

          • James Herald says:

Betty, the PLP makes a great opposition. May they always stay that way. In addition, note how OBA actually answers the PLPs questions instead of accusing all critics as racists like PLP did.

Congrats: Your party has found their calling – as OPPOSITION.

            • Truth Teller says:

Yea James you are right! The PLP refused to buy into the lie that the new victims of racism are white anglo saxon males.

I thought that the tea party movement was an American phenomenon, but apparently, based on the comments by you it is alive and well here in Bermuda as well.

          • WIN + WIN says:

CRAIG forget the haters keep your fat check, because in the end you’re the highest paid actor we have on this island. Take your trips and hire some more consultants the OBA can’t remove you because they don’t have anymore surrogates to replace you with. As much as they claim to be a multicultural party they are afraid to place a white boy as leader.

They hate the truth but Bermudian’s are not STUPID we all understand why you was placed there, some of us where in the meeting between BDA & UBP oh it had nothing to do with <<<<<>>>>>>! hmmmmmmm

          • Cow Polly says:

I’m sure all will become transparent when the cases are heard in Court Betty, don’t get your knickers in a twist, you really must exercise patience and wait for the wheels of justice to turn. Its how civilized societies work.

          • Redo says:

How about your beloved PLoP party come clean on a few things first? Hmmmm….how about that? I await your explanations but won’t hold my breath.

        • Sara says:

Where were you when the PLP couldn’t do math properly?

    • Keep Calm says:

Wayne can please leave the Premier alone we all know by now it wasn’t written in Craig’s script. He can only address the media by reading what the consultant wrote for him. It’s not his fault he’s only a paid actor so please direct your questions to the real men in charge of the oba.

      • BETTTY TRUMP says:

“There can be no faith in government if our highest offices are excused from scrutiny – they should be setting the example of transparency.”

        by Edward Snowden

So we should not be selective and hold government accountable. You can not call the PLP out, and fail to hold the UBPoba accountable and transparency. If not you are the king/queen of practicing hypocrisy. It was the UBPoba whom promised to do politics different. Now that folks are doing that, the UBPoba are failing to live up to it. TRANSPARENCY……I think not

        MUCH LOVE TO YOU…..

        • Cranberry says:

Ah yes the PLP – Three letters that mean non-transparency, arrogance, and out of power – so funny to listen to all the lofty ideals spouted by their trolls now their hands have been taken off the govt credit cards and travel budgets – LMAO…

          • LOL (original TM*) says:

Yes you can finally sit in the front of the church again.

            LOL

    • Vote for Change says:

      Dear MP Furbert,

it is time for you to come clean about why you joined the PLP.

Did you join because with the boundary changes in Constituency #6 you would not have won the seat as a OBA/UBP MP in December 2012? as the Boundaries created a PLP stronghold beside COnstitiency # 5 and any PLP candidate would have surely won.

      Please come clean MP Furbert

      Thanks

    • Issues maybe? says:

SMH…all I can say is you and others defending this amazes me! As the opposition, there was a whole lot of the same rhetoric being thrown from the now governing party! You wanted change, transparency, yet much of the same it would seem!

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

This is true both parties are really trash innit.

        LOL

    • Question says:

Are you ever going to speak to the content of the article? Going off on the PLP and their members about crap that happened more than 3 years ago is so lame. . . seriously.

Do you have anything to say about the “content” of this article?

      Q

    • Common sense says:

Sal Fine is that you from Facebook??????

    • Bod man says:

I did not realize Mr. Furbert was in Bermuda….where has he been? Hiding???

    • Mazumbo says:

JET GATE, JET GATE, JET GATE, JET GATE .JET GATE

  2. cool says:

Nathan Landow vs 4 Uighurs. Same thing Furby, let’s move on.

    • Stay Right Here says:

I don’t wish to move on, nor wish to talk about things that happened 4 years ago with a man most of us couldn’t stand.

UBP people like to tell the PLP that they should have said something when certain former leaders were doing a pack, well OBA people need to stand up now.

Why can’t the premier answer the question? Why was your mate on the plane? Why didn’t you tell us he was in the meetings? How hard of a question is it to answer?

PLP Keep asking the questions – some people want this to blow over – but it is clear that something is definitely up!

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

That’s why you will stay right there as you stated.

        LOL

    • Tommy Chong says:

A man Washington Post revealed, had hired illegal-gambling kingpin Joe Nesline as his consultant in a build of a hotel casino in Atlantic City VERSUS Turkic farmers from China

Ah Yes! I can clearly see the similarities.

  3. ClearView says:

DEB was scrutinized for doing much less than our current premier is doing/has done, yet there is no public outcry by those same folks who ranted, razed, and marched. Why is that?

    • WTF says:

That’s what I’m saying. I mean now this guy is saying I filed a lawsuit so I can’t tell you what I have been doing and who I have been meeting with.

Well if Marc Bean was lying – then Cannonier should have no problem answer the questions. This thing may have legs after all.

      • Tommy Chong says:

Oh it has legs for sure but I’m not sure if it can see them when standing.

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

Ummmmmm no your wrong only started paying attention on the last day DREB was the Premier?!!!

      LOL

  4. brutus says:

looks who wants to come clean??..this flip flopper who doesn’t know what integrity, honesty and character if you hit on his head with them..furbie stfu

    • die hard St. George's Fan says:

Wayne get a life you didn”t do any better. What you making noise
for.You don”t know who you want to be for UBP,PLP next OBA?

      • somuchless says:

Furball just misses his free flying. Over ten times a month to sing Bermuda is another world. A real joker. The man is confused.

    • HONESTY & INTEGRITY says:

You may want to ask your Tourism Minister the same questions he’s the one that stole heroin out of the Court Safe,

    • Yahoo says:

I guess Flip Flop has been sitting on the sideline long enough – he wants some press too.

Crawl back under your rock Flip Flop.

  5. Family Man says:

    Travel Agent to the Pyramids.

Is he annoyed he didn’t get the commission on the airplane tickets?

  6. WTF says:

OK, so now the premier isn’t answering questions because of this lawsuit.

Ok, so if Marc Bean is lying – why isn’t the premier answering the questions. And how does this lawsuit have to do with who went with the premier on a flight.

My My My – this thing is smelling worse by the minute. Reminds me of Ewart. Jesus – bring back Paula please, at least she had no drama!

    • somuchless says:

Paula might not have had drama but her clothing surly did tell a story. And those hats. Wohhhhhhh

  7. somuchless says:

I guess it is true that things come in threes.

today we’ve had Rayban, commission-wrong and now furball.

Tomorrow I bet it be foggo, weeks and burgess.

O don’t forget the cheerleader Betty trump who always defends the PLP no matter what they do.

    • nuffin but the truth says:

      “commission-wrong”…now that’s real funny…

      ROFLMAO.

    • BETTTY TRUMP says:

“A basic tenet of a healthy democracy is open dialogue and transparency.”

      by Peter Fenn

IF folks fail to hold the government accountable, this indicates that are HYPOCRITICAL. One can not call the PLP on everything, yet fail to do the same for the UBPoba. ONe can not say well the PLP did it, now it is okay for the UBPOba do it. THIS IS “NOT DOING politics DIFFRENTLY.” THIS IS INSTEAD HYPOCRITICAL BEHAVIOURS AT BEST.

I hope that the UBPOba diehardblindfaithfulness fans can raise above a level of hypocritical behaviours and be honest in regards to this matter. I hope they can hold their government up to the same level of scrutiny as they would any other political party.

TRANSPARENCY …… LET ME SEE IT. CHANGE…..I THINK NOT….

  8. nuffin but the truth says:

flip flop furbie makes me laugh everytime he opens his mouth..
    in goes his foot!

  9. Triangle Drifter says:

On & on & on it goes. Can you all in the PLP not find something of some real substance to beat the OBA with?

    • Stay Right Here says:

You mean substance like why are the Premier and his Minister saying something different?

Why he said “bumming a ride” instead of “he was in the meetings”

Sorry, but I think it is substantive to ask why the premier can’t keep his story straight. He works for me so we have the right to know the answer to the question.

      • Issues maybe? says:

Ditto! Role of the Opposition, one which you all have conveniently forgotten! Lord knows some had more face time than the opposition leader previously! How soon we forget! The defending…Amazing!

Clearly confirms party politics rather than defending and supporting basic life principles….what is right and what is wrong! Sad!

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

Might be a plantaion question ………..

        LOL

  10. You Know Me? says:

I am sick and tired of this nonsense! There is NO transparency. There is nothing but lies and deceit. Does this Gov. THINK that the people of Bermuda are stupid ????? It is just a matter of time before 3-5 thousand Bermudians march on parliament House and demand that the Premier be removed…He is Making a fool of himself and the people of Bermuda hiding behind no comments when he was stating that if he was elected his Gov would have Transparency and create Jobs Jobs Jobs. I have have so many friends and family out of work it’s is a joke. Every week there are more PEOPLE losing their jobs. All I ask Mr. premier is that you ANSWER THE QUESTIONS AND STOP HIDING. WE MADE YOU THE LEADER SO LEAD. I HAVE HAD ENOUGH.

    • Sandgrownan says:

Given that the people of Bermuda voted repeatedly for the PLP, yes, I would say they are stupid.

      • Tommy Chong says:

Right now I feel how some of the people who voted PLP must have felt after all was said & done. The difference is I NEVER voted for the PLP.

    • Al says:

There is now a court case. He has to say “no comment”.

      • Tommy Chong says:

The court case is for allegations of bribery & phone tapping which has nothing to do with this. One must ask themselves why charges were brought up on the other allegations but not these ones. We must treat government like an employee of ours not like some football team who we route for whether they properly perform or not. What’s the government’s business is the people’s business because in the end we all will face the brunt of their choices.

  11. Bermuda boy says:

Flip flop, get lost, you are a has been wanna be. Let the real govt do it all. You failed.

  12. Teed Off says:

I know the PLP did not do all right but don’t be blind to the facts people. But no worries mate more crap will surface.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Some aren’t on par yet so they can’t see the clearing from the trees plus their mindset’s gone bunkers from knowing the hazards PLP has caused so they chose to keep their heads in the sand trap.

  13. Coffee says:

Don’t worry Mr.Furbert , I can tell you now that a story will be concocted that will blame Mark Bean for jet gate .

  14. Concerned Smiths says:

This, at least to me, just proves the entire thing was orchestrated from the beginning. Created crisis! Is the PLP sure they are not Republicans?

Sounds like desperation to avoid or produce evidence for the Court case.

This is juvenile…a writ has been filed?

  15. swing voter says:

Compared to the original PLP (lawyers, accountants, doctors, and small businessmen) this bunch of wannabees lack the intellectual capital to call themselves a forceful opposition. SMDH at how stupid 2 ‘bright stars’ have stepped into legal horseshyte with both feet and soon to be up to their shoulders. Michael Scott better do this pro bono

  16. slouching says:

“In 1978, Landow was involved in a proposed hotel and casino project with
Washington gambling kingpin Joe Nesline, internationally known gambling
figure Edward Cellini and a Miami representative of the Gambino
organized crime family Anthony Plate. These revelations cost Landow an
ambassadorship early in the Carter administration.

In the early 1980s, Landow was a Democrat Party booster at a time when
the District of Columbia city government was selling urban renewal
properties at below market rates to politically powerful Democrats and
their friends. Landow obtained a parcel of DC land for a fraction of its
    market value.”

  17. Gotham says:

Wayne and Rolfe’s turn this week to have a go at destroying what is left of the economy. Bean might as well post the roster order online too.

  18. Jus' Askin' says:

    Premier ‘Come Clean’ ;-) ;-)
Furbert you crack me up too :-D :-D

  19. Sandy Bottom says:

So they went on a trip to meet developers who might invest in Bermuda and on the same trip there was a BUSINESSMAN? Oh horror of horrors.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Love how you downplay some issues while blowing others out of proportion just to suit your own notions.

Also love how you leave out key words like MANAGER or PARTNER to spin your point.

Have you not heard of the phrase CONFLICT OF INTERESTS or the word CRONYISM? If not I’ll tell you this they are complete antonyms of TRANSPARENCY.

      • Sandy Bottom says:

I leave them out because they figments of your imagination.

        • Jus' Askin' says:

Leaving them out is a ‘Mitch Move’ actually :-D

          • Suzie Quattro says:

Nah, putting them in is a Mitch Move.

            • Tommy Chong says:

Why would that be? Do you really believe someone would be, “bumming a lift,” on a private jet & so coincidentally that it’s to the same destination as the other passengers?

You need to get your head out of the Sandy Bottom before someone sells you a submarine with a screen door.

              • Suzie Quattro says:

People get and give lifts on private jets all the time.

        • Tommy Chong says:

WOOOOWIE!!! What type of phenomenon would that be when someone has the same figments of imagination as Minister Crockwell? I didn’t know there was figments of imagination related to ESP. Even our Premier admitted (after denying) that his manager was, “bumming a lift,” if you’re naive enough to believe that someone would coincidentally bum a lift to the same location on a private jet & coincidentally is a business manager of the person. Maybe the Premier is experiencing the same figments imagination esp phenomenon. You should explain to us how this phenomenon happens Sandy since you’re the president & founder of the figments imagination foundation & from the looks of it Suzie Quattro is your VP.

  20. Coffee says:

I reckon the truth and the OBA are diametrically opposed . Or at the least the road less traveled by the main players .

  21. Bermuda Boy says:

@ coffee. So the real truth about jet gate is out, it’s was Marc Bean’s fault!!!! Thanks for the insight.

  22. Watching says:

Furbert, you are not the brightest crayon in the box and proved that when you were Minister of Tourism.

By the way, you cannot sing!

  23. Johnny says:

What is really interesting is that nobody is commenting on the fact that there is a mole in the OBA that seems to be causing the troubles for the OBA by leaking info on their scandalous actions.

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

Who cares about that all party meetings should be broadcasted and played on the news or CITV IMO only the people that don’t want us to see the ugly stuff wouldn’t want this.

      LOL

  24. watching says:

The point of this is that if any of the players in this scenario were PLP MPs and their associates, certain people would be calling for their heads, yet these same people have their heads in the sand whenever the OBA do something.

  25. bluebird says:

FURBERT……..was he not the head of the UBP at one time.

  26. Cranberry says:

Ah yes the PLP – Three letters that mean non-transparency, arrogance, and out of power – so funny to listen to all the lofty ideals spouted by their trolls now their hands have been taken off the govt credit cards and travel budgets – LMAO…

  27. Take it Easy! says:

I think the Premier should come clean and while he is at it he needs 2 start making the PLP ministers start to come clean! Bottom line! I can guarantee those PLP ministers would go MIA!!! Lets not forget we still have a LOT of unanswered questions that the PLP never came 2 the floor with!

  28. Joonya says:

Furbit, I think the Just For Men has been seeping into ya skull man.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Must be seeping into Crockwell’s skull as well because he’s the one who Furbert is quoting.

  32. Unbelievebale says:

Remember that time after the 2007 election when Wayne Furbert said that in his “heart of hearts” he knew for sure that on one in the UBP was racist? That interview is out there. Look it up, folks.

I wonder what happened to compel him to cross the floor?

  33. Looking in says:

I think Wayne Furbert wants to join the OBA.He is the “flip flop minister “

  34. watchfuleyes says:

Court case?? Maybe and maybe not!

  35. watchfuleyes says:

Well there was ‘flip flop’ now there’s ‘bob and weave’ and Craig is the master of it. Heaven forbid he be put in a predicament where he has to give a response that is not written down!! Well maybe at second glance,it should go to court, then we can finally get some answers that are Not scripted, looking forward to that.

politicians are indeed a ‘special’ breed.
‘bermuda, you know me, craig cannonier’

    businessman
    politician
truth concealer, sworn to secrecy, self-righteous, self serving, trickster, profiteer, favor granting, globe-trotting, promise breaking, script reading, surrogate.
cut your pay, and that of your cabinet. refund the travel budget and talk to the people without a script
is that too much to ask? for u i am sure it is.
unfortunately, there are more than enough people, of like character, lined up for his job.
this is precisely why, in my opinion, we must make whomever takes on the peoples business, accountable. no matter who it is, or with which ‘party’ they may be affiliated.
shawn made a strategic move disclosing the premiers business to the public. i can’t believe he just let it slip, the guy is a lawyer after all. trying to distance himself from this fiasco, is a weak attempt to make people believe he wasn’t involved, but his intimate knowledge of the details is evident. for the details about exactly what happened and why, he said to ask the premier. yeah right, he’s sealed up tighter than fort knox, good luck with that.
anyway…the whole point is ; hold these clowns accountable.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Are you sure he’s a freemason? How can someone be a pastor & a freemason?
