Sybil To Take Part In Canada Pride Parade

June 25, 2014

Bermuda’s preeminent female impersonator Mark “Sybil Barrington” Anderson will be taking part in the World Pride Parade in Toronto this coming weekend, and will also be performing in part of a Cabaret doing his signature number as Patti La Belle.

Expected to attract a substantial number of people, the World Pride event is taking place from June 20-29, and culminates in the Annual Pride Parade on Sunday, June 29th.

Sybil — who has been named one of the top 100 gay entertainers — said his three wishes for Bermuda are that we provide a LGBTQ Community Clinic Centre with counselors to deal with sexual identity issues, legislate against hate crime and have a shelter for young people who have been forced out of their homes by there families because they are gay.

In addition to Sybil, the island is set to have a contingent present at the Pride event, with the Rainbow Alliance of Bermuda, in collaboration with the Centre for Justice, the Human Rights Commission, Kinsfolk Bermuda, and Two Words and a Comma, previously announcing Bermuda’s participation in the event.

In a previous statement, the Rainbow Alliance said, “The Bermuda LGBTQ community has much to celebrate, including the long-awaited passing of the Human Rights Act amendment in June 2013. Unfortunately, however, this amendment falls short when it comes to protection with regard to discrimination on the grounds of gender identity and gender expression.

“The Human Rights Act also fails to provide legislation necessary for protection against hate crimes. It is obvious that, while Bermuda has taken a large step forward in protecting its citizens, there are still heterosexist, homophobic, and transphobic attitudes towards our LGBTQ communities. Rainbow Alliance of Bermuda is committed to seeking safer spaces for the LGBTQ communities in Bermuda and advocating for further legislative protection.”

Any supporters of Bermuda’s LGBTQ communities who would like to join the contingent in Toronto on June 29th are asked to contact info@rainbowbermuda.org.

I’m going to be looking for the Bermuda contingent as I will be there in my leather, backsideless chaps to represent diversity. This parade is a great opportunity to meet other like minded men. I travel to this event annually to take part. It beats the San Francisco Pride Parade by a lot.

  4. Moonbeam says:

    Good for you Cybil !

  6. Monk says:

This is wonderful! Sybil is such a glamorous member of our community and inspires me to just be myself even if others (including my bosses) don’t approve. I may not be able to attend due to work commitments and my lack of vacation but as always I will be keeping abreast of the festivities via social media. Muah! Much love from this Somerset boy!

  7. Head of Maritime Security at BBIRYC says:

As head of maritime security at BBIRYC, I wish I could attend this event. I enjoy showing my pride off with every chance I get. My sailor outfit is always a hit at a pride parade.

one of PTBs best employees….I won’t mind another 50 alternative lifestyle drivers that are as courteous, helpful, and professional. what he does in his spare time is not my concern! PTB needs all the help they can get!

  14. ooook says:

What’s proud about a man dressed as a woman? Seems more of a mockery of what PRIDE truly stands for.

    • Common Sense says:

My only contact with Cybil is when he/she has been driving a bus I was traveling in. He/she is an excellent driver and ALWAYS courteous to passengers. It matters not one wit whether Cybil is male or female. It is “ooook” who makes a mockery of equal rights for all. Perhaps “ooook” can provide us with a list of all the ways he is offended by Cybil and why we should deny his human rights in any way.

I wish Cybil all the very best in Toronto.

    • Jamai says:

So is Tyler Perry I suppose because he is making loads of money it makes a difference right…

You ignorant people make me laugh!

Congrats to you Sybil for taking a stand and standing up for what you believe in. All the best!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but when they want to be negative and nasty it just shows their ignorance.

      P.S.
Sybil is more of a man than some of you commenting on here which is probably why they are being so negative, but hey that’s just my opinion!!!

  15. pwndwg says:

Makes a straight black male proud to be Bermudian and, more importantly, I think that it will impress most Canadians that Bermuda is a truly loving and welcoming place that is proud of all of its brothers and sisters.

  16. May the Force be with Sybil and all the Bermuda contingent proudly participating in Toronto’s 2014 World Pride Parade, and thank you Rainbow Alliance for highlighting the shameful fact that gender variant folk on Bermuda can still be discriminated against with impunity…

  17. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

You GO, Sybil!! One of my prouder, yet more embarrassing moments in NYC in the ’90s was being told that Sybil would be appearing at a club near where I was working on Christopher Street. The person made a point to tell me because they knew I was from Bermuda. They were ecstatic that they would get to attend because Sybil was/is so well known. I was ashamed to say that at that time, I had never heard of Sybil. Well, that has been rectified, and I am proud to call Sybil and Mark my friends. Wish I could join you in Toronto!

    • Concerned Citizen says:

      Sybil AND Mark? Confusion reigns!

  18. watchfuleyes says:

@ Common sense…Do we not even know if he is a he or she? My gosh what craziness.
