Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy Evacuated

September 23, 2014

The Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy was evacuated today [Sept 23] due what officials described as a “strong, sulphur-like smell.”

A Ministry spokesperson said, “The Department of Education this morning took the precautionary measure to evacuate The Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy upon the advice of the environmental officer, after officials sought to determine the origin of a strong smell on the premises.

“The school principal and the school nurse cleared the school and later, after consultation with officials from Environmental Health and Works & Engineering, the school was shut down for the day.

“The strong, sulphur-like smell was deemed to be strongest between the reception area and the pass way into the main building. After an investigation, it was discovered to be emanating from a backup battery in the computer system. Information Technology technicians were informed and they began remedying the situation.

“A decision had previously been taken to vent the school for the remainder of the day. Upon completion of the remedial work, officials will assess the situation to ensure it is safe before resuming normal activities.”
