Premier & Ministers Promote Bermuda In NY

September 23, 2014

“Promoting Bermuda as a first class business and leisure de‎stination and attracting inward investment is critical if Bermuda’s economy is to grow,” said the Premier Michael Dunkley, who is currently in New York highlighting the Island’s business and tourism attributes to key stakeholders.

The Premier is joined in New York by the Minister of Economic Development, Dr. Grant Gibbons and the Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell.

Earlier today [Sept. 23] Premier Dunkley and Minister Gibbons met with top tier business entities in New York, where they shared the Bermuda story – a story which touted Bermuda as a jurisdiction with a proven blue-chip reputation and a substantive global presence.

And this evening, the Premier will shift the focus to tourism matters, when he participates in the Bermuda Perfumery’s LiliBermuda perfume launch of the Mary Celestia‎ fragrance.

Tomorrow morning, the Premier and Minister Crockwell will host a meeting with key New York-based media to share business and tourism related news, events and initiatives with them.

Among some of the topics to be discussed include new hotel developments, America’s Cup and the upcoming PGA Grand Slam.

Of the New York visit, Premier Dunkley said, “Our message while here is simple. Bermuda is a  beautiful destination that is perfect for work, life and leisure.

“It’s about attracting foreign investment to our shores. So to our potential business partners, our message was that Bermuda is very conducive for business.

“We have an appropriate, pragmatic taxation system; we are highly developed and globally respected; and we have a world class business infrastructure with a first class legal and regulatory environment.‎”

‎The Premier continued, “Our tourism message is that we are convenient, and less than a two hour flight from New York. We are known as the ‘Jewel of the Atlantic’ offering natural beauty, sophistication, cultural heritage, and unique experiences  with a warm, welcoming, hospitable atmosphere.

‎”So these two days serve as a critical opportunity to engage with business entities, media and our global stakeholders to showcase and promote Bermuda and answer any questions they might have.”

The Premier returns to the Island on Thursday.

  1. Trulytruly says:

This is exactly what they need to be doing. Getting on with selling bermuda to the people that matter. Let’s see more of this.

    • Raymond Ray says:

They are three astute individuals that can honorably represent us here in Bermuda wholeheartedly. I personally look forward to more of this type of representation along with the new approach taken in dealing with tourism…

      • I never trust a snake says:

Sorry to tell you Ray but 2 out 3 are astute, one shouldn’t even be there. What’s next former jail birds into government Ministers this goes for both parties. Yes we need change but desperation we can do without.

        • We Are Not Amused! says:

takes another snake to know one!

        • Hurricane says:

@I never trust a snake, there is much that could be said about these men, but to say that either one is not astute make you sound real stupid.

      • Something stinks about this says:

I can understand why the Premier and Grant Gibbons went for the business part, but why did Crockwell have to go and talk about tourism still?

I thought this was the reponsiblity of the Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) Chief Bill Hanbury? This is his expertise lets be real why are we paying him $300,000. + a year for?

        • Creamy says:

Because he’s the tourism minister, genius.

          • Hurricane says:

So we leave the genius behind, what sense does that make?

          • Rockfish#1 and#2 says:

Of course, Crockwell was there in his capacity as the Minister! Aka a politician. Aka Hanbury’s boss.

So! The BTA is independent of any political direction, right?
This Minister seems to think most of us are stupid! You can’t make this stuff up.

          • Hurricane says:

So the “genius” doesn’t go on the trip………hummmmmm makes perfect sense to me……….NOT!

            • Creamy says:

I was calling the previous poster “genius”. I was being sarcastic. Ask your grade 3 teacher to explain it to you. If you could understand what you’re reading the discussion would be a lot easier.

  2. more than enough says:

    Livin’ la vie da loca

  3. Just a matter of time says:

Selling bermuda ..”to the people that matter”. My that speaks volumes.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Such a pleasant change from the junkets, plus entourage, to China, India, the Middle East, Hollywood, who knows where else.

It is called fishing where the big fish are.

    • Trulytruly says:

Because they actually do really matter to us Bermudians. They are the gatekeepers that decide whether funds get invested in Bermuda or not. Bermuda’s very future depends on them feeling confidence in Bermuda. If they do, it is all of Bermuda that will benefit. They matter a lot.

    • Creamy says:

Yeah, they’re saying they are talking to people that might come here or do business here.
Rather than, for example, going to India and talking to Indian movie stars, because that would be a total waste of time and money.
Or going to the middle east and staying at the Burj Al Arab. That too would be a total waste of time and money.

    • JustAskin2 says:

Well, while we’re shilling Bermuda out to the wealthy, hope the politicians don’t forget to add that the way is wide open for those who choose to live on the Island to become permanent residents, their children can work here during the summer, and – oh yes – they can buy up all the prime real estate that they want.

  4. Coffee says:

Where are they staying ? Did they travel first class ? Are they traveling with their respective wives our spouse ? Who are they meeting with ? Are they eating at Mickey d’s or Ted’s Steakhouse ? How long will they be staying ? How much is this costing the taxpayer ? Who are they talking to ? Why isn’t Mr.Hanbury with them ? When did they go ? When will they return ? Did Jeff Baron jump on the bandwagon ? Is Night and day ex mayor involved ? Why didn’t they tell us they were going on this junket beforehand ? There was a shooting last night , shouldn’t the Premier and National Security Minister be here to comfort and give hope and reassurance to the people of Bermuda or is this trip more important ? Is Bob Richards in charge ? If so why wasn’t the public appraised before the Premier left ? How are they getting around the city ? Have they rented a limo or are they catching a cab ?

    • Navin Johnson says:

Coffee this is Michael Dunkley and Grant Gibbons not Marc Bean and Derrick Burgess….

    • Creamy says:

… why didn’t you ask whether they took a couple of security guards with them?
Oh yeah. Only one guy did that.

      • Ringmaster says:

@ Coffee. I would expect they could respond to each of the sensible questions you raise, unlike a previous Premier who would take the 5th, or in Bermuda vernacular, refuse to answer because they are Plantation questions. Not to worry though, the same ex Premier is living the high life according to him. You are paying for it.

      • Triangle Drifter says:

        Don’t forget the limo travel.

        • NFL says:

Hey Triangle the OBA report is worst then the NFL report.
Don’t forget the $350k. Yes and the half report provided by the OBA chairman who terminated his services soon after!!!!!!!! hmmmmm wonder what else he found out!!!!!hmmmmm

          • mixitup says:

Of course….you know how it goes with these types.

            • Double D says:

              These types?

Thought such phrases/terminology were disgusting, racist and has no place in teh 21st century?

Disgusting you are…no more and probably a lot less

          • SMH says:

            yawn

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

hahaha…i get a kik outta u bie…u shud go on da nex bermys got talent bie!

    • mixitup says:

I love it! Thank you coffee for my gut laugh tonight…..as sad as it really is.

    • Tough Love says:

Love it! Treat them all as equal.

    • JustAskin2 says:

Don’t worry, these questions will not be asked of THEM.

  5. smh says:

You only need one minister to do this….Three ministers talking to the same people…The whole cabinet may as well go! Send the Environment minister too since tourism involves our parks and stuff! Carry on!

  6. We Are Not Amused! says:

I bet they didn’t have a security detail and big black limos all lined up like EWB and his cohorts did.

    • Trulytruly says:

I saw one of those black SUVs up at police HQ last week. I wonder what they are used for these days?

    • Coffee says:

I’m not a betting man , but I can guarantee you that Craig Cannonier is really feeling the love right about now ! Remember how Shawn and his cohorts went on that clandestine jet ride ? How did that work out for them ?

  7. Micro says:

A better tourism and marketing product would probably speak louder.

  8. Under Grounds Of National Security says:

Now have you all stop dissing each other and your respective politico warlords?

Of all the comments I must say to Navin Johnson, the only difference between the four politicians you named is skin colour. Stopping playing the race card.

Don’t ever attempt to inject that “we are superior” attitude into the debate by suggesting and noting what is the most obvious difference between these men. Your bitterness is transparent.

If Bermuda is looking to revive its tourist industry the one thing that we continue to do is to fish in the same waters, but expect to catch a larger school of fish.

Our ideal ‘tourist model’ that we welcome to our shores since the Jim Woolridge era has been the tourist with the deepest pockets (the most spending power). So they – Michael/Shuan/Grant – are in New York (fishing in the same waters, I presume). But here is the latest research on those with deep pockets or rather those with the most disposal income.

“…The combined wealth of the world’s billionaires is now higher than the combined market capitalisation of all the companies that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average, according to the survey conducted by research firm Wealth-X and UBS.”

And where are the most wealthy or those with the most disposal income? In the Far and Middle East, not the USA.

So, are you marketing (fishing) in the right areas for deep pocket tourists? Or, are you just marketing blind in a very satuated marketplace? Additionally, have you changed your ‘tourist model’ to reflect changes in tourist habits and spending since the Jim Woolridge era? If your answers are a resounding yes, then why are you fishing in the same waters, ie New York?

It’s time to fish in waters beyond your present self-imposed limitations and build new tourist marketing strategies.

Finally, a night dedicated to Bermuda Perfumery’s LiliBermuda perfume launch of the Mary Celestia‎ fragrance. This is a trade, as in business initiative NOT a tourist initiative, gentlemen.

The America’s Cup is clearly (and should be) a tourism initiative whilst the perfume launch is clearly a trade/business initiative. Because the perfume launch will never bring tourists to Bermuda whilst the America’s Cup will. Very convoluted and confused, gentlemen.

    • Navin Johnson says:

Under Grounds of National Security I am sorry you feel that way and I apologize if you misunderstood the intent of my post..Sadly in Bermuda people think of race first when it comes to politics and my comments were from a point of view of character and attitude towards a betterment of all of Bermuda and had nothing to do with race…Skin color with regards to my comment was coincidence and not racial as anyone who knows me would attest…

    • Tough Love says:

Excellent points. And yes, we should be aiming for the Middle East for tourists. The standard of living in Dubai is about the same as ours and New York.

Cast wide your nets when fishing for the really big fish, Bermuda.

  9. Robert says:

    100,000 dollar trip

  10. X man says:

Bermuda is already a popular and well liked destination in the New York area – maybe we should try to reach out to
the Chicago ,Stanford, Baltimore, Pittsburg, Philadelphia, Atlanta.

  11. Rhonda says:

Does the Premier, not have confidence in his Ministers, he has to be everywhere holding their hand. I don’t care who you want to blame, but if we are broke no funds for abuse center. Why pay Ministers full salaries if they require an overseer.

  12. MAKE MY DAY says:

They certainly did NOT promote it in the western States!!! I did NOT hear anything – in fact I never see BDA advertised anywhere!!! Hmmmmm!!!

I’m still wondering what happened to those MILIIONS that E. Brown gave to his Chicago “buddy” – to promote the Island, 6/7 yrs ago!!! HMMMMMMM!!!!

Was a “detailed” expense report ever presented for that huge amount of Tax Payers $$$??? Yea right!!!

  13. Rhonda Neil says:

Will this be perfumgate, for the OBA, who did the Premier meet with, where there cs present.

  14. Rhonda Neil says:

Will this be perfumgate, for the OBA, who did the Premier meet with, where there any
    civil servants present.
