Tokio Youth Mountain Bike Series Is Set To Go

November 13, 2014

The Tokio Youth Mountain Bike Series will kick off this Saturday [Nov 15] at the Arboretum thanks to the clean-up efforts by the Parks Department following the two recent storms. After Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricane Gonzalo, the Arboretum was completely covered by fallen trees and debris.

The Parks Department worked solidly for over a week and was able to clear the trees and debris in order to ready the course for the children to race this weekend.

Event Coordinator for the Tokio Youth Mountain Bike Series, Zoe Kempe added: “We are so grateful to the Parks Department for all of their hard work preparing the Arboretum for our series. We have a lot of children that take part and that look forward to this event each year. There would have been many disappointed children, and parents, if the event could not have taken place.”

“Tokio Millennium Re certainly wants to recognise the hard work by the staff at the Arboretum who helped to make sure that our event, a free community event, could take place as scheduled. The community is still working together in the hurricane clean-up and we should continue to be proud of this.”

Roger Parris, one of the Supervisory Foreman at the Arboretum for the Parks Department said, “I am really proud of the hard work and partnership displayed by both the Arboretum staff and the young men in the Parks Youth Programme. Most of these young men actively assisted with the clean-up of the Arboretum, the Deputy Governor’s property and Clifton House – the Premier’s official residence.”

The Parks Youth Programme consists of a group of young men that have been referred to the Parks Department by various schools and community services. The programme teaches young men about embracing and practising good work habits and making good decisions. They begin by volunteering their time as they gain increased knowledge and practical skills regarding horticulture.

They also learn timekeeping, attendance, work ethics and general policies within the work place.

Mr. Parris said, “We really enjoy hosting the Tokio Youth Mountain Bike Series at the Arboretum as we see how many young children love the event. It also brings families together – spending quality time together and being active outdoors. We wanted to make sure this event could still take place and we focused on making that happen.”

The first event is this Saturday [Nov 15] at 4pm at the Arboretum for primary school children aged 3-11. Children can use any type of bike – even those with training wheels or push bikes with no pedals. Every child must wear a helmet and closed toe, athletic shoes.

The dates for the series are: November 15, 22, 29 and January 10, 17, 24 and 31, 2015. All events are free and take place at 4pm at the Arboretum. Sign up can be done on the day of the event. This is a family friendly event and everyone is welcome.
