Videos & Results: Bicycle Works Criterium Race

March 30, 2015

[Updated with videos] Bermuda’s junior cyclists had strong performances in the Bicycle Works Criterium held Sunday morning [Mar 29] around the Ace and XL buildings in Hamilton.

Matthew Oliveira made an early escape in the Adult A category with eventual winner Shannon Lawrence and pulled away with his older competitor to eventually lap the entire field.

Lawrence was clearly the strongest in the category and when he chose to put in a surge to drop Oliveira it happened quickly, but the youngster held his position, leaving the chasers to the sprint for third. Darren Glasford scooped the final podium spot out of a group of five chasers.

In the B race teens Dylan Hill and Kaden Hopkins took Mark Lombardi and Andrew Soares into an early break and pushed out a lead that nearly lapped the rest of the group. In the final sprint is was down to just three with Hopkins crossing the line first followed by Hill and Lombardi.

The C race showed that 13 year old Ben Edwards is moving quickly, finishing third in the group while Malik Joell, the only Junior A entrant [racing at the same time] was with the C leaders and scooped the series points.

As part of a four man group that was leading for the entire group but marred by a crash just before the finish line, Joell did well to stay with the leaders. C was won by Terry Thomas followed by Bradley Matthews and then Edwards.

Veteran competitor Julia Hawley topped the Women category with Earlena Ingham in second and Tristan Narraway in third. The junior categories saw quality racing from all, including many who have just made the transfer from the mountain biking season to the road.

In Junior C it looks like there will be a long battle between Blake Oliveira and Adrian McPhee while newcomer Liam Flannery raced well for third. It was a one man show in Junior B with Micah Cook taking the win followed by Ensue-Nico Davis and Malik Smith.

Next up for the BBA is the Winners Edge Road Race on April 5th which will start and finish at Prospect and take in Middle Road, North Shore Road and Frog Lane.
