IAC For Children & Families To Hold Meeting

May 15, 2015

Social service agencies, parents and members of the public dedicated to improving the lives of Bermuda’s families are being encouraged to attend the annual General Meeting of the Inter Agency Committee [IAC] for Children and Families on May 20.

“The meeting aims to gather relevant stakeholders together to determine what services are being offered and by whom, and identify any gaps that need to be addressed,” a spokesperson said.

“Presentations will include updates on the child development programme, the national policy on early childhood education, and 2014 Intake Statistics for the Department of Child and Family Services.

“The Inter Agency Committee for Children and Families is an umbrella group of service providers in the public and private sector, as well as concerned citizens.

“The IAC includes charities such as Family Centre, SCARS [Saving Children and Revealing Secrets], PRIDE Bermuda, the Centre Against Abuse, the Department of Health, the Reading Clinic, the Sunshine League, the Adult Education Centre, CURB and many more.

“Founded in 1997, the IAC has spent the past three years conducting interviews and compiling research on the needs of vulnerable children and families on the Island, including an analysis of where gaps may also exist in service.

“The result of this painstaking work is the Children’s Agenda of Priorities – a direct response to the identified needs for a coordinated and effective network of service provision.

“The IAC’s overarching priority is for Bermudian families to have fair and equitable opportunities. This would include ensuring that historical, political and institutional barriers inhibiting equality are constructively mitigated and prevented from reoccurring.

“Work towards achieving this ambition is ongoing and dedicated individuals and partners are working with Government and relevant stakeholders to ensure a better life for our children.

“The Children’s Agenda of Priorities also includes ensuring families can afford to live independently, have support to recover from trauma and have the education and skills necessary to secure a job that allows them to earn a living wage.

“As part of this agenda, a reinvigorated push to help Bermuda’s families is being rolled out by the IAC, with the community encouraged to get involved.”

The Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 20, at 12.30pm at Charities House on 25 Point Finger Road in Paget. To attend, RSVP to iac@prevention.bm. For more information about the IAC, visit their website and Facebook page.
