Armed Robbery At Maxi Mart Store In Sandys

September 13, 2015

[Updated] Police attended Maxi Mart in Sandys tonight [Sept 12] following an armed robbery which saw two men brandish a firearm and demand money.

This makes the second armed robbery in as many days after the Money Shop in Warwick was robbed at gunpoint on Friday.

Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said: “Police responded to a report of an incident that took place around 11:50pm on Saturday night September 12th 2015.

“It appears that two men entered Maxi Mart in Sandys and brandished what appears to be a firearm and made demands of money. The men were given an undisclosed amount of money and the thieves then made good their escape.

“Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have seen two men acting suspiciously in the area or anyone who may have any information on this incident to contact police on 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 800-8477.”

Update Sept 13, 10.47am: Sandys South MP Jamahl Simmons said, “The news of the armed robbery at Maxi Mart has shocked and disturbed the Sandys Community and anyone in the island that supports law and good order. We condemn this crime and are grateful that no one was hurt.

“We encourage the public to assist with information that can lead to the capture, conviction and incarceration of these criminals. Working together, the community and the Bermuda Police Service can send a clear message; that there is no place for attacks on individuals or businesses in our community.”

Update 5.39pm: Shadow Public Safety Minister Walter Roban said, “The armed incident at MaxiMart is a sad reminder that the spaces of quiet from the scourge of continuous gun violence can be broken in a heartbeat without notice.

“There is clearly still serious work to be done to eliminate the tools of violent crime and its impact on our community. Those agencies tasked with this purpose must be given our full support.

“Since this is an area with heavy people traffic and activity, we do hope the investment by the government in CCTV technology will benefit the investigation as it has done in the past.

“Our concern now goes out to the management, staff of MaxiMart and any shoppers who might have been there at the time. Their wellbeing and safety is of utmost concern and we must assist them to move beyond this incident.

“It is now important to give the Bermuda Police Service [BPS] our full cooperation in the investigation; especially anyone who witnessed what happened or may have information helpful to solve this crime committed in the White Hill community.”

  2. Vulcan Trash Cleaner says:

sooner or later these types of scum will try it on with the wrong person, the sooner the better!

  3. Raymond Ray says:

Same crap different day :-( It betwixt me, just how is it (with confidence) robbers are entering establishments and getting away with robbing them, especially when we have so many people around their doors and across the street…plus cameras!
I’ve often suggested increasing sentences. Them involving gun related crimes once convicted serve full sentence no if but nor when!!!

  4. chip says:

    jobs or else

    • Rhonnie aka BlueFamiliar says:

Or else we’re going to terrorise hard working people?

      Don’t be so ridiculous.

An armed robbery isn’t committed by those desperate to work, it’s committed by those who feel entitled to take what they want, when they want, and don’t care from who.

    • Varied says:

Please. Stealing is wrong no matter what. What would your tune be if someone robbed your house?

Yes, more jobs would likely result in a decrease in crime rate, however there is no excuse for anybody stealing from hard working people.

    • Vulcan Trash Cleaner says:

or else what ? you are NOTHING

  5. Concern says:

This is getting out of hand and the police service is cutting back on police the number of police officers.

    • stunned says:

      serial robbers smh

    • smoke says:

We are actually one of the most policed states in the entire world per capita. I can think we can lose a few.

      • Voter (original) says:

We have a larger per capita number of police because we are so isolated. A similar sized town in the U.S. would be able to call on police from neighboring counties, Bermuda does not have that ability. We also have police at the airport, and Government house, which in other countries would probably not be supplied out of the main police body, but from other security forces. Most towns of 60k in the USA don’t have these extra areas to cover.

    • Scorpio says:

How many police do we have? 400, with a population of 60,000? That’s one cop for ever 150 people, wayyyyyy above the average ratio.

The BPS isn’t the issue. You can triple the size of the BPS and provide more resources if you like. Once they’ve captured the perpetrators, what happens next? Often joke sentences that hardly act as deterrents. The bleeding hearts will abhor public floggings, cat o nine tails, but to para-quote Ving Rhames from Pulp Fiction ‘we need to get medieval’. Or, these attacks will continue on and we’ll just talk and talk and talk about it, which tends to happen here often.

    Wild wild west…this week.

  7. Kathy says:

Soon they will need security at every grocery store.

    • Soooo says:

Maxi Mart has security after dark. Not that they could do much against guys with guns…

      • Say Whaat? says:

You don’t know what you are talking about. And neither dot he 10/11 people who liked this.

  8. RBKing says:

You notice there’s never any description of the armed robbers these days. I guess we all know it, so why bother say it.

  9. blessed says:

Security will not help. These guys have guns security dont. Two in a weekend they are connected. Someone is trying to get money to get out…. when they find who is on the run they will find their armed robber as well. Common sense

  10. Real Deal says:

The simplest solution to this problem is for establishments to use special money bags with dye in them that cannot be easily washed off . It would just a matter of time before you catch the scum!

    • Say Whaat? says:

I assume that they took the cash register money, and probably used a paper bag. If they gave out a special bag of money it might raise suspicions.

      • Ameboa says:

I think you missed the point of what Real Deal was saying. If and when a robbery takes place then the staff/cashier put the money they demanding in a bag that can be traced later.

  11. D says:

Its probably the same two men that robbed the money shop….

  12. Sad days for our island says:

    Somebody somewhere knows something.

yet we continue to cut the budget of the police….we will see less and less proactive policing because they are not miracle workers. There is only so much more with less that can be done.

    • Uh huh says:

And why is the police budget cut? Because THERE IS NO MONEY LEFT!!!!! The previous government made sure of that, so what we are seeing today is the result.

Vote them back in and we’ll all see just how bad it can get,

    • Scorpio says:

Alot of people here are covering up a lot of BS, as long as the money gained from these acts benefit them.

  13. Rick Olson says:

I think it is time to allow security cards to carry guns before this problem gets worse . There needs to be strict regulations on who qualifies for a gun permit the playing field needs to be leveled. There is no fear of the police and our criminal justice system does little to support the BPS.
Most will disagree with me but it is only a matter of time as we have gone down the wrong path economically and socially.

    • quizzically says:

I would hesitate on guns but would have no emotion on tasers and batons :)

    • Tone Deaf says:

Agree Rick, Turn the tables on the scumbags

    • LJBDA says:

      More guns. More death.

      • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Yeah… that’s correct…If you live by the gun you die by the gun…see how nature takes its course…what’s the problem..? Criminals don’t give a f#@k about me …why should I give a f#@k about them. .?

    • Self says:

The regular police officers don’t even carry guns, and you want to put them in security guard’s hands? We don’t even know if the guns these punks are carrying are real, yet you want a shootout? That won’t solve the problem, and may even result in some innocent bystander/customer being hurt or killed. I think the security guards should have better protection considering the climate, but not guns.

      • ding a ling says:

F them. want got commit such a crime then shoot them in the as*/Ba**s. Tazze them to death, beat them with a bat or club, do whatever. I don’t care about them like they don’t care about us. Time for vigilante justice I ask

    • MIA says:

Oh yeah genius and do what? Have an old school western style shootout at a GROCERY STORE? Stop typing nonsense. You of all people should really be quiet on this issue.

    • Scorpio says:

Oh yes, the solution to gun crime: introduce more guns. Yes, let’s arm the security guards. Let’s arm your next door neighbor living close enough to you to hear their every fart and sneeze. Arm everyone, that will surely curb the shootings.

      PSA:

If anyone’s sarcasm meter is busted……………that was sarcasm.

  14. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Maybe we should legalise firearms for all…registration of firearms to legal owners…might just make a difference…Unfortunately in the pestilence of the times we need to cull the herds of bad diseased blood sucking vermin…

    • Family Man says:

So the same people that can’t keep a car upright and between the walls on our roads would be carrying guns?

We might need a few more Docs in our emergency dept.

      • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Or until YOU get a firearm pressed into your head…then it’ll be a different story yah??

      • Self says:

People can’t even act right at a cricket match for pete’s sake…and they want to put GUNS in their hands?

We just won’t need more doctors, we’ll need more morticians too!!

    • Not good idea says:

They will be killed for their guns just like in JA
the only proper solution is to fix the underline cause. legalize weed it will bring money into the country on large scale wear everyone can get slice and Bermudans can go back to being layed back happy with enough money to last 2 weeks on or even day by day working 9 to 5. if they don’t have even that this will continue as more people reach their limit. everyone has a limit of what they can take or what they will live with.

  15. Zevon says:

And the highly detailed description we have is that it was “two men”. How helpful.

  16. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Hmmm…looks like an opening has emerged for some Private Contractors to capitalize on. Jobs jobs jobs…life is all about balance…We need highly trained men to diffuse lethal situations quickly…Russian Spetsnaz or Isreali Krav Maga training would suffice I would say…but bermudians will continue to cry over the same spilt milk.

    • Ameboa says:

Keepin it Real .. oh my you must have been in the military overseas cause Spetsnaz and Krav Maga are not the typical special forces you hear about in everyday news like Rangers and Green Beret. I discovered their existence with the British Army. Their style and training would be beneficial for sure here.

  17. john doe says:

    Come out of Babylon

  18. Oh,I see now says:

Security carry guns so they can be targeted for them I DON’T THINK SO.These guys are lazy cowards they should put the death sentence back on the table.I bet 100% of them would be crying in mommy lap knowing they could be facing DEATH over life in prison. The stupid saying they have “keep ya head up” takes on a new meaning when a noose is being wrapped around it.No I don’t have a problem but think about what I said when someone is shoving a barrel in the face of you and yours in your home…..your home.

    • Not good idea says:

you seek to kill them with out understanding how they came to be. good thing your not a leader.
you kill one and another will take its place. they are not born this way they are converted. find out how to stop them from being converted.

    • MIA says:

People are poor. There are no jobs. This was a victim-less crime. This country is so boring you all wet yourselves whenever something like this happens. You just can’t contain your excitement then log onto Bernews to rant with your faux outrage then forget about it the next week when the newest iphone is released. Death penalty for robbing a store? Nonsense. You sound like a klansman.

      • I heart 441 says:

Ummm, you just ranted yourself! Hypocrite

      • PBanks says:

Armed robbery a victim-less crime? What?

        • MIA says:

No one was injured. Are you slow? This store isn’t going to close down now because they got robbed. Go read a book.

  19. Bobby says:

The problem is the courts… not the police.. there is NO punishment for these people that rob and steal… Until the courts give them some good time in prison it will stop..

  20. Perhaps you would take me seriously about the catapult idea …or keel haul ,it is still on the books…we have the ferryboats…

  21. Y-Gurl says:

Oh please, the police need to catch the robbers in order they be taken to court, and the police also need to put a proper case together to ensures a conviction, neither of which happens with any consistency

  22. Coffee says:

I get robbed every time I shop for food .

  23. San George says:

Welcome to the new normal. The OBA and the government will not be permitted to rob this population of opportunity without consequences.

  24. Hey says:

Can’t even make a quick run to the store with a peace of mind anymore. Damn.

    • I heart 441 says:

Yea because stores in Bermuda get robbed daily! Sarcasm people

  25. Interesting says:

    Another gun control success story!!!
