Jump Rope Team To Compete Internationally

Senior jumpers from the Bermuda Heart Foundation’s Jump 2B Fit program will represent Bermuda at the World Jump Rope Competition in Braga, Portugal, while the program’s competitive team, the Bermy Bouncers, will be representing the island at the Pan American Jump Rope Championship in Orlando, Florida from July 1 through July 8.

A spokesperson said, “The Jump 2B Fit program from the Bermuda Heart Foundation’s jump program has worked hard at becoming a model for producing youth ambassadors for the island who are passionate about jump rope, physical activity, civic engagement, and personal empowerment.

“The program’s competitive team, the Bermy Bouncers, will be representing the island at the Pan American Jump Rope Championship in Orlando, Florida from July 1st – July 8th. The team which has 10 first time competitors and two returning seniors will be competing in power based speed events and jump freestyle events.”

“These 12 students are made up of female and male youths ranging in age from 8- to 17-years-old. Jumpers on this national team are made up of students from Somersfield Academy, Somerset Primary, St. Georges Prep, Warwick Academy, Whitney Institute, Dellwood Middle School, Francis Patton Primary, and Mount Saint Agnes.

“Our jumpers train three times a week for 2.5 – 3 hours, comprising of a mix of strength, conditioning and endurance training as well as working to enhance their single rope, double dutch, speed and freestyle jump skills.

“Although the sport may be a new one, and not one widely recognized, the hard work and dedication put forth by these Bermudian youth is something that should be highly recognized.”

“Our team takes what other athletes use as a conditioning tool and makes a sport of it. Jump rope is one of the most physically challenging sports there is, and these youth are planning to represent our island proudly.

“Later in July, our senior jumpers will be represent Bermuda at the World Jump Rope Competition in Braga Portugal.”
