Premier: Action By UK Has No Place In 2018

May 1, 2018

“This attempt to legislate for Bermuda from London is a return to base colonialism and is an action that has no place in 2018,” Premier David Burt said following today’s debate and vote in the UK House of Commons.

A Bill before the UK Parliament is aiming to make all the Overseas Territories introduce public ownership registers by the end of 2020 via an Order in Council. The Bill, in effect, aims to orders the territories to change their beneficial ownership register policies to adhere to guidelines the UK sets.

The matter of imposing a public beneficial register has been discussed for some time, with the Bermuda Government generally pointing out that the island has maintained a register of beneficial owners for over 70 years, and provides the information at request.

The Premier, who is also the Minister of Finance, said, “The action taken in the UK Parliament today signals a significant backwards step in the relations between the United Kingdom and the Overseas Territories.

“In the case of Bermuda, it is ironic that in the very year we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our Constitution, Bermuda is confronted with this regrettable ‘about face’ which fails to acknowledge this long history of full internal self-government.

“The Government of Bermuda has a strong constitutional position and the people of Bermuda can rest assured that we will take the necessary steps to ensure our Constitution is respected.

“This attempt to legislate for Bermuda from London is a return to base colonialism and is an action that has no place in 2018. It is especially telling that the Crown Dependencies are not included in this amendment which is restricted to the Caribbean OTs and Bermuda.

“Bermuda sets the standard in this area and our reputation for sound regulation is well established, internationally recognized and will be vigorously defended.”

          • Toodle-oo says:

And ’24-12′ along with ‘REPARATIONS !’

        • Gustav says:

which resources have the brits stolen from Bermuda ?
          here is nothing !
          polemic pure…..

          • Double S says:

Shhhhh…you know full well facts have no place in a ‘narrative.’

            • Sam says:

Let’s get some facts straight here.

This is not targeting Bermuda, the real enemy are money laundering Russian oligarchs who have flooded London. The recent poisoning in Salisbury adds fuel to the fire.

Margaret Hodge (chief backer) of clause 6 seeks to implement an open register of financial interests, which when you think about it is fair – basically prove you are not a crook.

Bermuda is not on the EU exclusion list though unlike…say, Barbados, South Korea, Namibia, Macau, Grenada. Bermuda is not the target.

So now you know the facts, you can see that Burt is turning these comments to suit his own agenda which is independence.

So call him on it – he is misleading you.

  2. Question says:

Well Burt, you should have been more persuasive when you were over there. As someone else said, this didn’t happen when Bob Richards was handling it.

Of course you whine about ‘colonialism’. Why don’t you accept the blame for once. Like an adult.

    • smh says:

This is no time for your party politics GARBAGE. This is about the future of Bermuda. Time to pull together against the Uk on this one – take your divide and rule elsewhere, troll!

      • SMH says:

“This is no time for your party politics GARBAGE.”

Too bad you plp hypocrites weren’t mature enough to behave when the OBA were in government….You are so much like trump, it’s hilarious.

      • Question says:

It’s no time for whining about ‘colonialism’ garbage. Burt lost the debate when he was representing Bermuda’s interests. In the eyes of the rest of the world we are a tax haven, and our standards have to be as high as everyone else’s. Burt should have been more persuasive, but he wasn’t. That’s the bottom line.

        • good point says:

Before you go and rattle off why Bermuda has to have ‘as high as everyone else’s’ (standards) you should compare and contrast ours vs the world…you might be surprised and find that we actually do have higher standards than most in many areas…

        • PBanks says:

Finance Ministers and Premiers over the years have struck back against these things for some time now, so it’s not like it’s just Burt whose cries have been overlooked by UK bigshots.

          • nerema says:

How can you say that? Burt has been the one travelling to the UK making Bermuda’s case since last July. He is the one who has been trying to sell to them this idea of our ‘Gold Standard’. Previously they listened to previous Premiers and Finance Ministers, but this time they didn’t.
It’s obvious. Burt failed. He should take responsibility for it.

    • Paul says:

I bet the premier, and the rest of his party suddenly appear on the Sherri daily sermons show…topic will be INDEPENDENCE.

      • Question says:

Like that would make any difference.

    • me says:

You must be an idiot to say something like that. You cannot believe what you’ve just written

  3. Dready says:

What, Burt doesn’t want the people to know who owns what, why?

  4. San Patrick says:

Burt is getting a taste of the excessive use of power. As the government grows, people shrink. It might be time to go alone – independence; if the UK is going to impose their will. The Americans and the French will help us. The problem is the Bermudian people will be swapping one set of rulers for another – which will probably be worse. Pick your poison.

    • Cranberry says:

If we go Independent UK USA will still both impose their will on us – but then we will be on our own and defenseless…

  5. Time to get the nasty Brits off of our back.
    INDEPENDENCE!!!

    • Vortex says:

And good luck with that visa to visit the US or all those prisoners/in protection who would be returned here, and bye bye free UK education, and another visa to see your Premier League team play. And a weaker credit rating, and bye bye forensics and police assistance, aid if a hurricane hits.

And the upside is? You beat your chest as even more Bermudian and proud.

Mate, you need to think this through.

    • The real Terry says:

STRAIGHTFORWARD as the only person I am aware of that has posted derogatory and negative remarks against Flora shows how out of step with the rest of the Island you are. It must be pretty awful living with such insecurity and hatred.

  6. SMH says:

“Time to get the nasty Brits off of our back.”

They’ll be sending your welfare sucking family back to you as well.

  7. Real Deal says:

in 2 years they want it. does not sound right to me.

    • nerema says:

You have a point there. It takes two years to order a new bus here.

  8. Alan says:

I propose we apply to be the 27th Swiss Canton.

  9. Truth is killin’ me... says:

INDEPENCE is a huge step…tread carefully oh “wise” one. “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

  10. Jenna Talia says:

    Once a chipmunk always a chipmunk….what can you do….

  11. Mother Theresa says:

To bad the UK Government couldn’t legislate for Bermuda with SSM and make it legal.

  12. sandgrownan says:

    Ha..dave.com to the rescue!

Perhaps if he’s done a better job making Bermuda’s case, perhaps we wouldn’t be where we are. The UK is both right and wrong in this, but not for the reasons the mouthbreathing, knuckle dragging irrelevant throwbacks to the 1960′s think.

Independence. LOL. Can’t even pick up the trash or get the buses running.

  13. rodney smith says:

Mr. Premier , You may have to put on your , “Big Boy Pants “, and go at it alone . There is nothing stopping you from taking a pink slip to the governor , telling him to pack his bags and go home .You have 60% of the voting public behind you . Can you make a case for Independence if need be ?

    • Double S says:

Independence was never in their political mandate that resulted in 60% of the electorate voting for them.

Can I ask Rodney why you continue to be in the OBA despite your continuous lambasting of them and your persistent praise for the PLP?

    • Brady says:

      Independence with no money down!

    • Gustav says:

      independence ?
Jamaica style is waiting for you

  14. PANGAEA says:

I guess that all the brts will be going home on the horse they rode in on.

  15. Rocky5 says:

Dear Premier Burt, please start thinking about your responses to the UK Govt.. What you have just said will win you votes in Bermuda, but will confirm the UK thinking that we are a TAX Haven. You should have defended our record instead and left colonialism alone.

    • Cranberry says:

      It’s DREB speaking…

    • frank says:

      what is there to hide
every thing great England has they stole and robbed from the African countries.
old Bermuda laws still in place
like the police still have free healthcare this was put in place to attract English men to come he and join the police force
so mr burt why is this still going on why is it that one group of government worker has to pay and not the other

      • sandgrownan says:

For Christ’s sake….most of it came from India you muppet.

  16. nerema says:

A typical immature reaction by Burt. This shows why he was not persuasive enough when making our case. Too much focusing on things that don’t matter, not enough getting to grips with what does matter.
    Amateur.

  17. sandgrownan says:

“….It is especially telling that the Crown Dependencies are not included in this amendment which is restricted to the Caribbean OTs and Bermuda….”

That phrase demonstrates just how clueless Davy-Bitcoin is, or he’s being simply disingenuous.

    • nerema says:

He thinks all the OTs are in the Caribbean. Laughable.

  18. Double S says:

Start moving your money people or at least switch it up out of BMD.
