A man opted to go to prison instead of paying a fine as long as he was out in time for Christmas.

Malcolm Symonds pled guilty to three motor vehicle offences: driving an unlicensed bike, driving an uninsured bike, and having a passenger on the back of the bike without a helmet.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined the man $1,000 for the uninsured vehicle, $1,000 for the unlicenced vehicle, and $250 for the third offence.

Alternatively, he said Mr Symonds could have 100 days in jail instead.

Mr Symonds replied, “What time does the bus leave? I’m ready.” He then asked, “Will I be out for Christmas?”

The Magistrate said, “You can stay longer if you want.”

Mr Symonds said, “No, I want to be out for Christmas.”
