Acting Premier Roban On Bermuda Pride Event

August 27, 2019

Speaking in advance of Bermuda’s first Pride Parade, Acting Premier Walter Roban stated, “Bermuda is a country with diverse opinions, ideologies and a history of strong spiritual convictions.

“We encourage everyone to be mindful of the diverse perspectives on our island and to seek peaceful, respectful and law abiding means of expressing points of view.”

The inaugural Pride Parade will take place this Saturday, and in describing the day’s plans, the official website states, “A community celebration will be held in Victoria Park on Saturday the 31st of August 2019 from 9:00am to 7:00pm. The park will open at 9:00am and the day will start with a 09:30 yoga session.

“At 10:15 Joy Barnum will provide a live vocal performance, followed by an opening speech and moment of silence for members of the community we have lost along the way.

“At 10:30, everyone will be asked to assemble for the parade through the City for an 11:00 start until 12:30. The celebrations will continue at Victoria Park from 12:30pm until 19:00.”

“We encourage everyone to be mindful of the diverse perspectives on our island and to seek peaceful, respectful and law abiding means of expressing points of view.”

It is not the ones who support the Pride Parade you need to worry about Acting Premier. We support the right to be different and have different perspectives!

    • Opinions Matter says:

Would you support a Straight Pride parade?

      • question says:

Isn’t that essentially what Bermuda Carnival is about? There were people doing all sorts in public at that event.

      • CURIOU$ says:

That’s the same as asking for a White History Month

      • Anbu says:

Keep hearing about this “straight pride parade”. Go ahead and have one. Pretty sure theyd support it. Not that anyone has to. If u dont support, dont go.

      • benjamindover says:

listen fool, what your saying is likened to a rally or white were parade. you have the brain of a mouse.

      • Kent Smith says:

        Its called Monday-Sunday….

      • Bermudian says:

If there was a parallel universe where straight people were persecuted, oppressed, murdered etc. for simply being straight, then of course!

        • Onions Matter says:

What is the oppression that happens in the modern 1st world?

Besides the SSM issue, which Bermuda’s stance is supported by the UN, btw.

          • Mike Hind says:

            That’s a valiant attempt, but it’s simply not true…

Unless you mean Bermuda’s stance that the Constitution is supreme over some group wanting to discriminate against folks for no reason…

      • Joe Bloggs says:

Of course I would support a Straight Pride parade, as long as it did not seek to denigrate or deny rights to another segment of society.

One should be able to be just as proud of being heterosexual (as I am) as any other person is of being gay or bi-sexual or transgender or gender fluid or other.

The point of the Pride Parade to my way of thinking is to celebrate our differences and our willingness to accept those differences.

        • Opions Matter says:

Agreed! and that is my point. We can celebrate the difference and not “shove” it in people faces. I respect my friends that are LGBTQIA, whilst I do not agree with some of the their lifestyle. I support and understand them. We agree to disagree on some points. Even speak to some of them thy find the current version of Pride Parades to be vulgar and slightly cross the line, in some countries.

          • Joe Bloggs says:

Being gay or transgender or whatever is not a “lifestyle” as you suggest any more than being a heterosexual male or female is a “lifestyle”.

          • wa says:

” I do not agree with some of the their lifestyle.”

I bet your friends don’t agree with your lifestyle either.
I think you’re pathetic for choosing a lifestyle of discrimination and hatred.
You must be a very sad person.

      • Really though says:

I think straight people have the luxury of celebrating and living straight pride every day. But if there was to be a straight pride for straight people who have not had to suffer any kind of oppression simply for being straight and wanted to celebrate their straightness by having a parade. I’ll be there with my gay self clapping them along if that makes them feel included and any better. *Rolls eyes*

        • Opions Matter says:

Claiming the everyday is straight Pride day is odd , as I don’t see any special flags or the idea of heterosexuality pushed and even celebrated. Your sarcastic tone (“rolls eyes”) betrays your meaningful intent and highlights where you stand.

          • Mike Hind says:

            You don’t?

You don’t see movies celebrating marriages all the time? You don’t see TV shows celebrating heterosexual relationships?
You don’t see folks saying “OOOH! Look! They’re going to get married!” to babies? Or “Is that your girlfriend?” or “Look! He’s such a flirt!”
You don’t see heterosexual couples in the media, like, every day?

          • wa says:

“I don’t see any special flags or the idea of heterosexuality pushed and even celebrated.”

No? I bet you see a lot of sand though.

      • Kevin says:

hope that transcends back to Dec 2 as it was quite clear that a few were not mindful of another perspective and others views …..plp and there supporters have severely short memories
this is a simple show of support that may actually show to those who hate that there are many more of us who support and will be there for our brothers and sisters

      • Anon Ymous says:

Would you support a white history month?

      • Starting Point says:

Would you support a White History month?

        • Mitchell88 says:

No. For the same reason I wouldn’t support a Straight Pride event. The whole point, fool, is to give voice to those who have been marginalized by the dominant (i.e. straight, white) culture. If you don’t get this, that’s your problem. Go away and have a think about why people should feel the need to take to the streets to demonstrate that they count, that they matter, that they have a right to enjoy life to the fullest, that if they are considered ‘other’ that is something to celebrate, to claim; it is something in which to have PRIDE.

          • Anon Ymous says:

That question was rhetorical, supporting your point :)

          • Fed Up Bermudian says:

As long as the parade volunteers are not out doing sexual things it should be no issue. The people of the stupid carnival parade should take heed and do the same.

      • Opinions Matter says:

Over all a good and healthy discussion on this matter. And I hope the day is fun and not hampered by our local church “puritans”, as we are all aware of their hypocrisy.

All should bear pride and not “attack” another fro their views nor try to claim oppression points. Without Straight pride their would be no Gay Pride. (that is a tongue in check humor, and not to be taken seriously)

      • Mike Hind says:

Straight people are welcome to Pride. They aren’t being excluded.

        Therefore, your question is irrelevant.

  2. trump supporter says:

Where’s the Premier, running.. Shouldn’t he be here. IJS

probably signing off on another imaginary bitcoin thingy

  3. SMH says:

PLEASE THUNDER AND LIGHTENING ALL DAY AND NIGHT.

    • Cow Polly says:

And if it doesn’t, will you then accept that God approves?

      • Ray says:

God does not approve of sin….regardless of the sinner….homosexuality is one of many sins ( but the bible does call homosexuality an abomination)

        • Joe Bloggs says:

Which God? Zeus? Poseidon? Apollo? Brahm? Vishnu? Saraswati? Itzamna? Yum Kaax? Hunab Ku? Some other God?

And please do not quote your fiction (Holy Bible) to me. I do not want to hear it.

        • PBanks says:

If Bermuda ever moves towards a fully theocratic society and moves to make various ‘sins’ into criminal acts (hello fornication, adultery, etc) then maybe religious teachings can be considered applicable in a secular society with its own laws and code.

Otherwise, this whole thing is cherry-picking (with, for whatever reason, gay rights being the most egregious violation of all).

        • Cow polly says:

God didn’t write the Bible, men did. God sent a rainbow over the island the morning of the parade. I take that as his blessing far more than what you think.

    • And if it does--so what--who cares says:

This event is about diversity, inclusiveness, human rights.

All things that should be dear to all of us as Bermudians.

Bermuda based bigotry is a very sad testament to our society.

Human rights and dignity are for all not some.

      • Onion Juice says:

What are you B!+€#ing about, we in Bermuda are very tolerant. There are places in de Caribbean and around de world that would be going off by now.
So enjoy ya lil parade and drink ya multi-coloured kool-aid and be thankful we in Bermuda are TOLERANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Toodle-oo says:

OH yeah , right ! Coz you demonstrate so very much tolerance and understanding in all the garbage you post.

        • Mike Hind says:

You… are claiming to be tolerant?
You, of all people… you, who spends lies and hate every chance he gets… are claiming to be tolerant…

          Amazing.

        • Tolerance says:

Thanks for your insights and always apprecIated OJ.

Not sure that tolerance is a word I would use to describe the comments, lack of support of broad based diversity and lack of respect for human rights that we have witnessed around here lately and your rather condescending comment!

We are not in the Caribbean nor in other places in the world. We are in our beloved BERMUDA. One country for all.

I will have my Bermuda kool aide mate.. it’s called swizzle.

          Blessings abound!

        • Question says:

You’re feigning tolerance because you have no choice.
You’re still a bunch of bigots.

        • PHSee says:

You tolerant? WTF. Not the word I would pick to describe you. Bermudians yes, you no,

        • 2woke says:

OJ, you can’t even lie your way through this.
You’re the most intolerant person here.

        • Mark says:

Only Koolaid drinkers on this island are you

        • Really Though says:

“So enjoy ya lil parade and drink ya multi-coloured kool-aid and be thankful we in Bermuda are TOLERANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” – LMFAO

You must understand that this tolerance goes both ways boss! Some are “tolerating” you just as much as you are “tolerating” them. After all, we are all Bermudians LGBTQ+ or not.

As if people should be grateful for bigoted tolerance. Naaaa boss keep your Onion Juice….oh and I’ll be sipping Cockspur and Coke (no pun intended) not “multi-coloured kool-aid”. *bloop*

        • sandgrownan says:

No, sadly not. Bermuda is a bigoted, racist, homophobic little island. The biggest myth perpetrated on the island is that we’re the friendliest people on Earth. Bermuda is one big seething caldron of teeth-sucking resentment.

        • Cubana says:

except you seem to have no clue on reality

        • Joe Bloggs says:

OJ, both Angola and Botswana have legalised homosexuality this year, so you had better stick to Somalia and Lybia when you return to Africa.

      • No Money says:

The same lot who practice segregation in their spending habits, living spaces and just about everything else… now preaching diversity and inclusion… wowsers, insulting at best.

        • wa says:

“The same lot who practice segregation in their spending habits, living spaces and just about everything else”

People of colour have traditionally discriminated against gay people, as evidenced by their spending habits, living spaces and just about everything else.

    • Cubana says:

PLEASE BE SUNNY WARM SLIGHT BREEZE and A GREAT DAY

    • Smh says:

During the Labour Day parade too?

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Nope, that weather has been delayed till Monday.

    • PBanks says:

Why not go full hog and call for a hurricane or tsunami?

    • Anbu says:

      No thats monday. Have fun

    • Will says:

Must be a reference to a Queen song who had a very talented gay frontman

    • Colibm says:

Who cares if it rains. I bet the event will still go on.

  4. Cow Polly says:

Wow! That was worth waiting for (not)

  5. Triangle Drifter says:

The Premier does not have the orbs to make a statement, as wishy washy as it is, on the parade so he sends out one of his mouth pieces to do it for him.

    Cowardly.

    • Tyrone Smith says:

Cowardly is when someone like you criticizes but uses his blog name to hide behind is real.

      • Mark says:

Back to school Tyrone, your grammar is pure Pee el Pee educational standard.

        • JAWS says:

Hmmm… Mark people like you are the very reason that black Bermudians stopped voting for the UBP and now the same curse has happened to the OBA. Stop for a minute and think my friend you sound……. Racist!

Mr. Cannonier I truly believe that you and the ruling party desire what’s best for Bermuda, but it’s supporters in the OBA like this that you need to dismiss at every angle. That’s why you lost 25 to 11 Sir….no need to hire a consultant to tell you this.

    • Hmmm2 says:

Oh, and you want respect and tolerance!
No you want it all your way. Typical! Because we don’t support you people we are baffoons and dumb and cowardly? No you you are cowardly because you still have not had s good March against racism and the crippling effects of denying Black people employment or education or freedom to read and be educated. Oh you can’t see that our Health care crisibsnd education crisis and cultural decay is a direct result of 409 years of white dominated society. Where were you when we needed you and so Why should we come out to support your desire. Black peoples beware they will still fire you and talk bad about your leaders after you march

      • Double S says:

“Denying Black people employment or education or freedom to read and be educated”

Black people are denied none of that. If that was the case the unemployment for black Bermudians would be 100%.

And the claim that blacks are being denied education is just too stupid to rebut (especially since the public education sector is 99.9% run and administered by black Bermudians).

        Try again.

      • Mike Hind says:

When are you going to organize it?
        We’ll be there.

  6. Toodle-oo says:

What everyone should really be mindful of is the divisive , racial cr@p your party constantly puts out to further the 2 Bermuda’s agenda and your power forever goal.
It would have been nice to just see a message encouraging everyone to respect and a good time.

    • No Money says:

You don’t rainbows are divisive. Check again.

    • LA says:

CV Jim Woolridge said this those little white boys don’t mind you being charge as long as they can tell you what to do. Wasn’t he UBP aka oba. You call the plp racist so why did you change the party name from UBP? You called it reform but black voters know your UBP is trying to hide behind the oba to escape it’s racist past.

      • Question says:

Here we go again with lying about everything.
That quote was not about politics at all. It was about two white members of the Tourist Board with whom Jim Woolridge had a quarrel. Yet you misrepresent it time and again to be something it was not. It was nothing whatsoever to do with the UBP.

You can’t help yourselves. You pile lies upon lies. It’s your only tactic.

  7. Ringmaster says:

Weasel words from a Minister of the Government presently using taxpayer funds to oppose these very same people. Presumably that’s what he means by seeking law abiding demonstrations. This after all the non law abiding demonstrations and the pepper spraying payouts.

    • PBanks says:

he’s pretty much using CYA policy in case something does go awry what with the counter-demonstration

  8. Stevie says:

Burt runsaway when he needs to support our people. Gutless.

    • Unbelievable says:

      Yes. David is gutless.

    • No Money says:

The same people who don’t support any other Bermuda event of the people….run as far as you can Burt

    • sandgrownan says:

      Empty suit.

  9. Real Deal says:

Excellent!! Bothers and Sisters of Christ you Must see and understand this as a gift from GOD to Bermuda. (Matthew 6:24) because now more than ever we can See what was before unseen.

Take NOTE and use this as a means to untangle yourselves and households in a way that you only show support for that that is Of GOD. This is the only way that we will better guaranty that our support will not be used to further the war against Our Great GOD.

You must see those tactics from those whom use them from the shadows. They may be cleaver but they cannot fool all of us all the time. Once you become enlighten you shall not be fooled or controlled.

  10. Me says:

Standing strong for Bermudians lol smh straight ones that only look Like me only more like

  11. BermieBorn says:

Look forward to every Government MP joining in the Pride Bermuda celebrations this weekend and strongly supporting every resident with great ‘conviction’ regardless of ‘spiritual’ choices.

  12. lolita says:

If politicians want their vote, they should give them equal say and rights. Otherwise be transparent and say, don’t want your vote, begone. I personally think sex / child predators are much bigger and more prevalent issues to worry about than a person’s personal sexual orientation.
