Court: Man Denies Assaulting Police Officer

Appearing in Magistrates Court today [Nov 7], a 28-year-old man denied assaulting an off duty police officer and threatening his wife.

Jaron Roberts denied unlawfully assaulting PC Stephen Cosham and causing actual bodily harm in an increased penalty zone near Clearwater Beach, and also denied two counts of intimidation, with the court hearing he allegedly rode his motorcycle directly at the officer’s wife.

The court heard this allegedly took place in the presence of Mr. Cosham’s 8-year-old daughter.

Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe granted the defendant bail in the amount of $10,000 with a like surety, and also directed that adhere to a curfew and wear a monitoring device. The matter is due to be mentioned again on December 9th.

A police spokesperson said, “28-year-old Jaron Roberts appeared in Magistrates’ Court today, charged with assaulting off duty Constable Stephen Cosham, the National Disaster Coordinator.

The police said that “following the incident which occurred at Clearwater Beach car park on the afternoon of Monday 4th November, 2019, officers launched a search for the suspects and quickly identified” Roberts as one of the alleged perpetrators.

“He was arrested, and following the presentation of the evidence to the DPP, charges were approved. The second suspect remains outstanding,” the police added.

“Roberts is accused of assaulting the officer and threatening injury to both him and his wife, with one count of Assault Occasioning Bodily Harm in an Increased Penalty Zone, and two charges of Intimidation.

“Officers from the Criminal Investigations Unit are still seeking the second suspect and are following lines of enquiry to also bring him to justice. If you know anything about this incident, please contact our detectives on 295-0011 to help make our community safer.”
