Video: ‘Taking Off’ Highlights Baggage System

November 21, 2019

Skyport has released the latest episode of ‘Taking Off’, a video series with host Mikaela Pearman that highlights the airport redevelopment project, with this episode highlighting the newly installed cutting-edge baggage handling system.

Speaking in the episode, Mikaela Pearman said, “If you’ve ever checked a bag at the airport, you know our current system is a bit outdated. But with our state of the art terminal almost done, that will be a thing of the past.

“A cutting-edge baggage handling system has been installed in the new terminal by Glidepath, a New Zealand-based company with nearly 50-years of experience in delivering airport baggage handling and integrated security screening systems.

“The new system will transport bags from the flight check-in desks, through a security screening machine before going on to a holding area where they are then transferred to their waiting outbound flight. The complex system is rigged in the ceilings of the first floor of the new building.

“There are conveyors totaling almost 3.5 kilometres in length traveling up to 1.8 meters per second.

“In addition to transporting bags to the flight loading location, the system software will maintain the passenger information for each bag and monitor its position along the conveyor belts.

“We are still testing out the system and would gladly take any used luggage you want to get rid of for our trials. To get more info about donating bags, email orat@skyport.bm.”

Do we really need so much sophistication for so few passengers. More to go wrong.

With the growing controversy about the Island Transportation issues I strongly suggest the Skyport advises on how the traffic flow will be managed for Taxis, Mini busses, Prearranged Taxis and Limosines.
If their plan is not functional its best to know it now rather than wait 5 or 6 years after discussion or maybe protests occur as was the case with the current system at the arrivals terminal.
