Photos: Fire Destroys Bikes/Cars, Damages Home

Within hours of a fire in St Georges, another fire ripped through the exterior of a Cox’s Hill Pembroke residence early this morning [June 6], completely destroying approximately six motorbikes, severely damaging two cars as well as the house itself. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the fire.

The residents, who all appeared to be European guest workers, seemed understandably quite stunned this morning, and said they were unsure how the fire started. As one resident told us, the main thing for them was that no one was hurt, and for that they are very thankful. Almost everything in a 15 – 20 square foot radius on the patio appeared destroyed, with two cars appearing to be damaged beyond repair.

When we left, signs of rebuilding were already being shown, with friends of the residents arriving to assist.

At this early juncture, it is unclear whether this was a case of deliberate arson or not, however we hope to update this post with official information from the Bermuda Fire Service as early as we can, which will likely be Monday.

Update June 6: Official information from the Bermuda Fire Service:

At 0510 hours a 911 call was received at Fire Dispatch reporting that multiple vehicles were on fire at 7 Cox’s Hill Pembroke. BFRS responded with 2 fire appliances, 2 support vehicles and 12 personnel.

The first appliance arrived on scene at 0520hours to discover that 2 cars and 8 motor cycles well involved in fire. Fire also impinged on the exterior of the adjacent apartment building which caused damage to windows and an exterior wall. Two firefighters in breathing apparatus brought the blaze under total control in approximately 14 minutes. A thorough search was conducted of the 2 closest apartments, and all occupants were accounted for with no reported injuries.

1 car and 7 motorcycles were totally destroyed by the fire. Another car and motorcycle suffered minor fire and smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
